The Gameplay is similiar to Insurgency (same Dev).

DOI is running with the Source Engine which means that there a quite long loading times for the Multiplayer.
The Multiplayer Servers are protected via Battle Eye Anti Cheat.

Nations you can play as
You can play 3 different Sites:
  • Nazi Germany
  • Commonwealth
  • USA

Every of those Nations/Allies have different troops which you can unlock by playing or buying in the Steam Shop as DLC, in the Shop of DOI and in the Community Market at steam.
Those make differences in the Outfit and Camouflage.

The Commonwealth also unlock the Canadians and Scottish Troops.

The Nation and troop you can play depends on the map you play on.
For example the Map Dunkirk:

You can only play the Nations Germany (Wehrmacht) and British (Royal Army).
All troops have to be existed since 1940. Every troop which didnt exist or fought in the fight for Dunkirk are not possible to play.

Official Maps
All offical maps:
  • Bastogne
  • Bréville
  • Brittany
  • Comaccio
  • Crete
  • Dog Red
  • Dunkirk
  • Foy
  • Ortona
  • Reichswald
  • Rhineland
  • Saint-Lô
  • Salerno
  • Sicily

On every map you can play Germany (Wehrmacht).

On these maps you can play the USA (US Army):

On these maps you can play the Commonwealth:
  • Bréville
  • Comaccio
  • Crete
  • Dunkirk
  • Ortona
  • Reichswald
  • Sicily
Classes
In DOI there is the almost the same class System as in Insurgency.
At the start you get 10 points that you can use to play with different weapons.
Every 5 Kills you get 1 extra point.

Each class has a maximum of players depending of the players in the match.
Only the Rifleman Class has no maximum.

If you play the Germans you can see that the Class names are in German.
A translation here:

  • Offizier = Officer
  • Funker = Radioman
  • Grenadier = Rifleman (means Grenadier)
  • Sturmtruppe = Assault (means Stormtrooper)
  • Kampfunterstützung = Support (means fighting support)
  • Flammschütze = Flamethrower
  • Panzerjäger = Engineer (Not quite right in the game because Panzerjäger means something like Tank Hunter)
  • MG-Schütze = Machinegunner
  • Scharfschütze = Sniper

The Numbers in a [] mean how much Points they cost for the different classes. Withought any costume stuff on it!

Primary Weapons in Detail -- Wehrmacht (Not Finished)
Wehrmacht

Karabiner 98K (Kar98K)

The Kar98K cant shoot in an automatic way. After each shot it has to load a new bullet in the chamber. This takes less a second. To reduce the bolting time use the greased bolt this makes the time for bolting about 1/2 long as the normal bolting way.

The Kar98K is the standart Rifle for the Wehrmacht. You can take this Weapon in the Role of:

  • Officer (Offizier)
  • Funker (Radio)
  • Grenadier (Rifleman)
  • Panzerjäger (Engineer)
  • Scharfschütze (Sniper)

The Kar98K can hold 5 bullets until it has to be reloaded.
You can upgrade the Kar98K with:
  • Rifle grenade
  • Bayonet
  • Greased Bolt
  • Stripper Clips
  • Sling

MP40

The MP40 is available for the:

  • Officer (Offizier)
  • Assault (Sturmtruppe)
  • Engineer (Panzerjäger)

The magazine of the MP40 fits for 32 bullets until it has to be reloaded.
The available upgrades for the MP40 are:
  • sling

Gewehr 43

The Gewehr 43 is similiar to the M1 Garand. Both dont need to be bolted but none of them is able to shoot in an automatic way. The Gewehr 43 can load 10 rounds in a magazine.

The Gewehr 43 is available for this clases:

  • Officer (Offizier)
  • Radio (Funker)
  • Sniper (Scharfschütze)

The Gewehr 43 can be upgraded with:

  • sling

The C96 M1932 is a machine pistole that has a 20 round magazine.
You can take the C96 M1932 in the following classes:

Primary Weapons in Detail -- Commonwealth (Not Started)
Game Modes (NOT FINISHED)
There are 8 different game modes in DOI.
  • 3 in coop
  • 4 in battles
  • 1 in special assignment

Coop

Stronghold

In Stronghold you have to secure a spot in the enemy territory and defend it to succeed in this gamemode. You play with humans or bots against bots (CO-OP).

Raid

In Raid you attack important sites where enemy Officers are or for example Flak 88 to destroy.

Entrenchment

In Entrenchment you have to defend a point for some time. If you lose a point the time for victory increases. If you lose all points you lose.

Multiplayer

Offensive

In Offensive there are 2 teams the attacking and the defending.
To win you have to secure all Points in time or kill all enemy waves. The defending side wins if they defend all points succesfully for the time they have to.
Units to Unlock and different weapon Skins
There are not much unlockable weapon skins in DOI. I won't copy that because someone else made a Guide about how to unlock those.

The Link for the Guide (Steam Guide)

Like mentioned before there are Classes in DOI you can unlock by playing or buying.

Commonwealth:

Germany

USA

Mods you can use for NWI Servers
NWI Servers are the official Servers of the Developers. In those you can only use Sound Mods every other Mod doesn't work because of balance issues then etc.

If you use a sound mod it will change your normal weapon sounds e.g. If you want to get this sounds out of your game you have to unsubscribe to the mod on your profile or in the steam workshop.

As far as I know if you subscribe to more then 1 soundmod only 1 soundmod will be used (if it changes all sounds).
Teamkills
Teamkilling happens because of the minimalistic Hud. Before you shoot always look at the Helmet of the potential enemy. If you cant see the Helmet, look at the outfit.
The standart Wehrmacht uniform is dark grey and the US Army uniform is more brown.

If you hear steps in a room near you and you dont know if its a friend or an enemy:

  • open your map
  • find yourself
  • look for an allied in the room/place
  • throw a grenade at the spot if no teammate is there
Free Weekends & The Community
Free Weekends

The Community mostly changes in the time of a free weekend because of new players who try to find out if they want to buy the game or not.

If you are someone who played DOI before:

  • dont be unfriendly
  • respect their problems in aiming etc
  • help them

If you are new in DOI and just want to give it a try:

  • don't annoy other players
  • adapt their gameplay
  • dont shout or submit songs in the voice chat
  • ask for help if needed
  • dont rage

The Community

The Community of Day of Infamy is very nice (as far as I know). There is not a toxic community as in more popular games and hopefully it doesn't change.
What you shouldnt do
Grenades

Don't throw grenades like in CS:GO or COD.
The HE grenades are deadly, if friend or enemy it will kill everyone near it.
Don't throw blindly the smokes you have. Always remember if you throw a smoke, why and think about that a friendly sniper can't take out a machinegunner in that area (as example).

AFK

If you have to go AFK for a longer time, leave the Server. You will ruin the game for your team because you probably take a place that no one can take place in.
If you need to go AFK for a short time, leave the class youre playing as if you play:

  • Officer
  • Radio
  • Sniper
  • Machinegunner

Those are the most important ones. But if possible go out of any class where is a maximum. So take the class Rifleman, everyone can play as Rifleman and its a very gamechanging class in the game.

Noob

Don't take the role of a officer if you started the game. The Officer can call airstrikes etc. if you dont know how to use them, don't play the officer.
The special Strikes all have a quite long cooldown so if you waste them your team is at a disadvantage.
But you can take the class of the Officer if you see that no one is going to take it.

Hi ZleNaes, I have some free time, and I would like to contribute to this guide. I like DOI, and I feel like one of the reasons for the lower playerbase is a lack of an official manual, which makes getting into the game (beyond the basics that is) confusing and frustrating. You've done a ton of work already, and I'd like to see this manual completed and expanded into an unofficial manual for the game.

@Planty The Potted Plant the closest thing you can get to a war simulator is the Arma series and Squad, although im pretty sure squad is only multiplayer and not as diverse as Arma, Arma 3 in particular.

Are their populated multiplayers servers WITHOUT Battleye? I want to play this game against people not bots. I cannot install Battleye because the administrator needs to put his password in to install it, so i cant play most servers.

@Planty the potted plant Thanks for your comment I wrote "DOI is a WW2 Shooter which is in between Arcade and Simulation." because DOI is not a complete Arcade shooter because of the ability to die in a single shot and the minimalistic HUD. I didn't wrote that its an Arcade or an Simulation.
The gameplay is in between an arcade and an realistic kind of shooter. It´s not one of each.
"i'm sick of people comparing two very different things.I don't see men crying over killing other men, or even facial expressions. We won't be close to a simulation till we get to VR."
The word simulation or realistic shooter isn't ment like that it has to be 100% reality.
Best example is the game Squad. Its a realistic Shooter. You have to play with a good strategy to not get killed (like in reallife).
No game wants you to be sad about playing it (unless its a anti-war game).

Still thank you for your feedback.
Planty The Potted Plant 24 Oct, 2017 @ 6:37pm
This isn't close to a simulation, this is an arcade game, i'm sick of people comparing two very different things.I don't see men crying over killing other men, or even facial expressions. We won't be close to a simulation till we get to VR.Sure you can say that this is the closest thing but that's a cheap way of justifying it.I've met people who thought this would more than what they got.I don't see hundreds of German or American soldiers fighting. This is your opinion and that's fine but it's misleading. I swear one person says it has realistic elements and suddenly everyones preaching it's a war simulator like the church.
Bottom line please just change it to say "arcade game with realistic elements"
