Introduction
So you picked Undying...You're probably asking yourself now what? Well my friend, I am about to tell you what. What you need to buy, how you need to build, and where you need to be!

Need to learn how to play Undying? This guide will be a difinitive guide to playing both top lane undying as well as support Undying either top or bottom lanes. Of course, after reading this guide you should be able to take what you've learned and do your "thing" middle lane as well.

This guide hosts tips, item builds (for their respective lanes), match-ups, combos, and most importantly skill leveling... It covers multiple aspects of Undying, including: Lane solo and lane support. You could take Dirge middle lane, but he shines 2 versus 1 (Decay OP).

First off, Undying is an Initiator. A well timed and positioned Tombstone can be devastating to your opponents during a team fight. Your ultimate amplifies your teams damage, slows the enemy, and heals you upon enemy death(s). Then all you need to do is Q,Q,Q,Q,Q, and more Q, while your enemies are QQing.

So lets begin!

Skill Set Building

Top Solo Lane (Radiant)/Bottom Solo Lane (Dire)

Level 1 Make sure you hit at least 2 or more players every time with decay, otherwise focus on last hitting until you have reached level 3.
Level 2 Grabbing tombstone early allows the player protection from an early gank. Throwing down a tombstone and kite your enemies around it can be fun and exhilarating!
Level 3 Start harassing with your Decay while still keeping a decent last hit count.
Level 4 Start playing a bit reserved, by this time you may be subjugated to ganks from the enemy forest. Don't worry though, if you're caught in a bind throw down a well placed level 2 tombstone and kite.
Level 5 Decay, Decay, Decay, Don't be afraid to 2v1. Decay steals strength and allows you to hit like a truck; and at the same time lowering your opponents maximum health pool.
Level 6 You're a solo lane, you don't need your ultimate just quite yet. Maybe invest in some wards at this time, anticipating a gank from both middle lane as well as the forest.
Level 7 Keep at it. You're zombies are just getting more and more powerful.
Level 8 Final rank of Tombstone, don't worry about them pulling creeps. Just go throw down a Tombstone and collect.
Level 9 From this point on, continue lane'ing and/or go where you're needed.

Support Lane
Level 1 Harass, keep your carry last hitting. Ward where needed.
Level 2 At this time you should either be 1. pulling creeps or 2. stacking them.
Level 3 From this point on play aggressive. Allow your carry to last hit, while you put the pressure on the enemy.
Level 4 If they lack range attacks, don't be afraid to be in between the enemy and there creeps, keeping them pushed back from there tower, and denying them of gold and experience.
Level 5 Follow the remaining skill tree set above, and play support like a support should.
Item Building
Solo Lane

Mana, Mana, Mana I need mana. Undying is a caster. Mana is his lifeblood, and without it, well, you're nothing.

Support Lane

Standard support build for Undying, nothing special. If you've randomed Undying and are planning on supporting with him, throw a Ring of Basilius into the mix for your early game build.
Combos + Match-ups!
Heroes that burn mana, or benefit from zombies off your Tombstone can be detrimental to Dirge.

Enemies:
  • Necrolyte
  • Keeper of the Light
  • Huskar
  • Anti-Mage
  • Silencer
  • Axe
  • Death Prophet
  • Earthshaker
  • Nyx Assasin
A great lane'ing partner for Undying would be any champion that supplies him with mana, and or has a good AoE/long stun. All heroes pair well with Dirge, however some heroes are better than others.

Allies
  • Keeper of the Light
  • Tidehunter
  • Crystal Maiden
  • Lich
  • Enigma
  • Zeus
  • Outworld Destroyer
  • Centaur Warrunner
  • Disruptor
Runes
This section of the guide is pretty basic, what runes to grab and those you need to control for your team.

Double Damage:

Don't pick this rune up...you don't need it, you rely on your Decay over your auto-attack.

Illusion
Don't pick this rune up either, what are your illusions really gonna do....>.> provide vision?

Regeneration
Situational. If you need it, grab it.

Invisibility
Again another situational rune, though its best not to grab this one either.

Haste

Grab this rune, unless you may think it might benefit another player on your team. This rune provides you with max speed so you can pop your ultimate and move in and out of team-fights quickly; slowing enemies and maximizing ally damage.
Conclusion
Final Notes
Well, there you have it....Well most of it, though the first build focuses a lot on Decay over Soul Rip, remember its a Solo Lane, if you're surrounding yourself around creeps-you're doing it wrong. Play Dirge from a distance until you've landed at least 4 decay buffs, then move into melee.

When playing the support build, play a support, help deny, be where your needed, and most importantly WARD WARD WARD. It keeps your carry's mind at easy, so they constantly don't have to keep wondering if there is a gank coming.

UNDYING IS A CASTER INITIATOR, not a tank people! Play him accordingly.

People looking for a guide for this character aren't going to be looking for "dirge", they're going to be looking for "Undying".

very good, this hero is one of the best but still he is one of the most underrated heroes in dota, its very hard to lose a teamfight with a good undying in your team

I've been having a lot of trouble with Undying, and this guide seems very good at setting me right. The skills and items are sensible, and I like how you used pictures for quickly showing the skills and builds.
