Just like many others I was excited for WRC 23 fully expecting it to be dirt rally 3.0 so I bought the game and was fooled just like everybody else who did

I have a very mid-tier PC AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 3060ti it was almost impossible for me to run this game at 60 FPS at 1080p launch game updates helped now with most settings on ultra low I run this game at 4K 60+ FPS

I am very good at this game which is 90% of the reason I have continued playing it despite all of them massive issues with it so this is my review after putting so many hours of my life into this game

Content

The career mode is awful as far as I can tell your staff never improve on their abilities except for your chief engineer which you have to specifically upgrade the event calendar never changes for the main WRC events so once you have done it one time you have experienced everything it has to offer sure you can select different contracts to have different goals but that doesn't change the actual content of career mode 0/10

there's this thing called MOMENTS it's like a predetermined scenario that you play you get a small amount of XP for completing them and I guess if you want something different to do that isn't career mode or multiplayer this is something at least

Multiplayer

absolutely atrocious you join a Lobby and wait for an event to start if an event is already in progress you sit in the lobby and wait for the next event to start you cannot spectate if you are in the lobby you cannot do anything if you are in the lobby you wait until the stage is finished you have absolutely no idea what's happening if you are in the game and playing you can spectate other players if you finish before them or if for some reason you did not finish the stage you can spectate imagine doing time trial mode except you only get one try

Gameplay.
Want to make absolutely sure it's clear that this is my opinion

I enjoy the gameplay strictly speaking and viewing this from the perspective of a racing game it is enjoyable the physics are not simulation but they are not Mario Kart either once you get a feel for how cars drive it can be very rewarding some cars I feel like are unnecessarily difficult to drive or for seemingly no reason are just incredibly underpowered within their own class.

Gameplay can be incredibly frustrating because of things like getting reset for seemingly nothing or driving an incredibly small distance off track and getting reset or a shortcut penalty despite nothing being there or nothing indicating that you are going somewhere the game doesn't want you to go as far as penalties they are absolutely a joke this game does this really funny thing where for some reason there is a small delay between receiving a penalty and potentially receiving another one meaning that there are a handful of stages in the game where you can intentionally shortcut into another shortcut and overall it's beneficial because you are only receiving one penalty instead of multiple I will admit I have not seen this effect time trial leaderboards for any of the stages that I have personally taken interest in however I have seen people intentionally shortcut because it's faster even with the penalty or because they are short cutting multiple times and only receiving a single penalty overall

Okay but for who? This game doesn't have a player base but let's pretend that the player count consistently being less than a thousand players online is enough for Esports what type of presentation is this game going to have how do you Market it


what is even the basis for Esports in this game Dirt Rally 1 and 2 had Esports they also had a significantly higher amount of players and a much bigger audience ( and this is no way negative towards the players ) but even then the Esports wasn't really anything significant so what hope does this game have?

Other random thoughts

I often find myself looking at the leaderboard after getting a #1 rank and thinking to myself I feel nothing like I don't even get excited about this I feel like I'm competing against nobody ( this is not meant to be disrespectful to other players and I am not insinuating that I think nobody is good enough to challenge me ) when I do a time trial and end up with a 5 10 20+ second lead there's no enjoyment

even though my review is mostly me being a crybaby about this game not being Dirt Rally 3.0 I have taken time here and there to read the reviews that other people have written about this game a lot of them say the same thing

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you've read one negative review about this game for the most part it probably is pointing out legitimate issues and flaws with this game even if it is somebody just whining like I'm doing this game is supposedly supposed to follow a yearly release schedule similar to EA F1 titles I can say wholeheartedly I will never buy another EA title ever I am a huge Dragon Age fan not buying it I love Battlefield but not 2042 never played it will not be buying any future battlefields oddly enough I enjoy Madden another EA owned series will never play another Madden

played at launch game ran great 120fps @ 2k on a 3060ti this last update played 40 min crashed 5 times could not get 60 fps @1080 unless every setting on low trash game trash dev team 0/10 steam refunds
