K2 AKA Chogori — the second highest mountain peak on Earth. The northernmost eight-thousander in the world. It is located in the Karakoram mountain system northwest of the Himalayas, in the Baltoro Range on the border of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

INTERESTING FACT:
Chogori is known as the "Wild Mountain" due to the extreme difficulty of climbing. Reaching Chogori Peak from the Chinese side is more difficult and dangerous, so it is usually climbed from the Pakistani side. Chogori became the last eight-thousander conquered in winter. Ascents were almost always made in July and August, the warmest months of the year; K2's more northerly location makes it more susceptible to inclement and cold weather.

WHY K2?
Chogori is called a mountain with many names. It was discovered by the British in 1856 as part of a topographical expedition that determined the boundaries between Kashmir, which then belonged to the British Empire, and China. The mountain was designated "K2" as the second peak of the Karakoram (hence the abbreviation "K"). Explorers sought to learn local names and later the summits designated K1, K3, K4 and K5 were renamed and are now called Masherbrum, Gasherbrum IV, Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum I respectively. Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of K2 (the nearest settlement is 120 km away, and its view from afar is obscured by other mountains), as in the case of Everest, there was no local name for the mountain. It was proposed to name it after the explorer Henry Godwin-Austen, but this name was rejected by the Royal Geographical Society. Therefore, historically, it turned out that the technical name K2 remained the most well-known in Europe.
