Don't play this if you don't like RPGs

Another Dragon Engine game meaning the graphics, and physics are drastically different from the majority of the series take is as you want. I personally was a fan of it, but I could tell a lot of unnecessary things were added with the graphics and details that made me lag and took up more storage space.

General Things

So in this one, there is a new protagonist "Ichiban Kasuga" he is a sort of parallel to Kiryu in a way with his own quirks and own way of doing things. The visuals don't go as crazy as before in my opinion because they tried to make it look realistic with the "blue ish" filter.

Combat and Gameplay

Here is the most controversial part of this entry, the combat. As you probably can tell there is a new fight system and it's in a turn based RPG. I would say for a non RPG player like me, it was actually pretty fun, they make up for the RPG with the very nice animations. And the job system for each character was a very nice addition for players to experiment and have some sort of diversity with the gameplay. Although it gets a bit repetitive in a while. But a positive I can say is that the grind is very minimal compared to some other RPGs I played (I them early because of the grind). The minigames were very creative compared to the previous games and they felt like the prime of this game because of the new setting and new cast. My favorite one was the side story of the business one, it gives you money and the gameplay was very very addictive for no reason. My last note of the combat was that it felt out of place with the other Yakuza games, the RPG fights felt as though they removed a big or all seriouseness in the fights because it was turn based removing the fast feeling action of our old Yakuza games that felt interactive and overall immersiveness.

Story and Characters

The other playable characters were fun and memorable with their simple and straight forward stories with their bar stories, and with the addition with their individual personalities shown during the random conversations you get around the cities, the other characters felt very fleshed out. Story wise I don't think it was the strongest, there were some moments were it felt like the majority of the story was very iffy, but as usual Yakuza Franchise fashion the theme was amazing in the story and puts the characters in situations where it develops them. Needless to say I felt personally like 50% of the story was about the characters, which is good because this is a new cast and the game needed us to care about them. The fan service of the returning cast was satisfying, and honestly one of the top 5 reasons I wanted to play it.

Conclusion

Not my favorite but if you are wondering if they did a good job with the new change in genres I think they did a pretty good job genuinely entertaining for a non RPG player like me.

This one was the best one so far, on par with Yakuza 0

Another Dragon Engine game, remember that entire different engine from Yakuza Kiwami 2? If you played it in the same order as me. Finally getting off the Remastered Saga (Thank God) the game delivers a completely different experience with a fresh new cast, fresh new villains, fresh new combat, and high quality content. Everything has dialogue even the substories and it's so cool they put that much effort on this one. Although there is some problems like Kamurocho being half finished because hilarious construction but small problems like that aren't really going to affect my thoughts on the game.

General Things

The graphics were amazing, they really went in and outdid themselves with the Dragon Engine's Beautiful graphics. I also like the new city Onomichi, it has such a fresh vibe like when we first got to Okinawa in Yakuza 3. The soundtrack was fire as per usual. Although I could complain about the flow of the combat, I seriously was not a fan of the new orbs heat even though it was just a reskin of the heat gauge. The quality of everything though made me look forward to the next RGG games and made me want to play more of their games that run on the same engine like Judgement and Lost Judgement or the next following Yakuza games.

Combat and Gameplay

I didn't really have much to say about the combat when I first played it in Yakuza Kiwami 2, So I don't know if this felt better or worse, what I do know is that I enjoyed this one more than Kiwami 2 because I know exactly what I can and can't do now. It has, in my opinion one of the best levels in the franchise so far, they were so interactive and full of content, and their fights were really great in terms of difficulty, context, basically everything a level would need to be fun. Speaking of difficulty, I finally felt challenged unlike Yakuza 4-5 Remastered where I sort of feel it to be too easy/repetitive. This might be a hot take but I actually loved Yakuza 3 Remastered's Difficulty most fun I've had with bosses ever. It was a shame though, the game is not as heat action reliant anymore, that bar was perfectly set by Yakuza 0 and it's dynamic 3 style and heat system which is hard to top. If you don't remember Kiryu has a new normal attack moveset and "new" heat actions. It's too bad that you sometimes feel like using heat actions are unnecessary because you don't really have a lot of options. And for some reason the terms for activating some heat actions are really unclear or just straight up janky. It's also pretty bad when you get blocked because even normal thugs can block you strong moves making the gameplay feel a bit unexpectedly slow even with just random encounters. Also clan creator is back lmfao I actually like that mobile game type minigame it's a good pass time.

Story and Characters

The story was actually pretty good, I got spoiled a bit which is pretty sad, but even so the story telling is almost on par with 0 although sadly towards the end they just blast your face with a bunch of subtitles and expect you to read every single one of them. The pacing was also good and engaging, literally the Remastered Saga destroyed my expectations of good pacing, but this one blew my mind not on how good the pacing is but how finally better it is than the rest. And with the characters, why are they so good? The new cast is so good and fresh, they finally put you in something else instead of crossing over like previous stories. They were so memorable, and the antagonists too, it felt like the whole antagonists tropes were here. The rival, the evil villain, the squirmy loser who croaks at the first sight of defeat, the once evil but actually good kind, basically they have all of them making this whole Yakuza 6 Experience memorable.

Conclusion

This is definitely my favorite, sorry for comparing previous games so much, it was just such a fresh experience that I thought not comparing them would take me weeks to explain lol. Combat is a bit iffy I just wish there was more heat actions but it is what it is. The ending is a bit controversial where they tackle Kiryu's ending, if you didn't know this was supposed to be his final time as a main character. You'll see for yourself.

The rise of quality (finally) and it's noticeable shortcomings

The quality of the game was unexpectedly good. It was unexpected for me because I bought the bundle, and I thought that 3-5 would have the same quality but I was proven wrong with new gameplay mechanics, Better graphics than 0, and better story elements in general. There is a lot of things I would comment because this entry is drastically different from the other games in the same bundle.

General Things

For the general things, I would like to put away first my nitpicks with the movement, there is STILL no sprint which can be annoying at times, and the run animations for when you first moves were a bit uncomfortable to get used to at first but you slowly get used to it. There is several new things to do, like driving wow! And of course one the new playable characters.. Haruka! Although sadly she doesn't fight, we can play her and play a rhythm game. Honestly at first I was skeptical of it, but I eventually grew to love her part because she actually has an engaging story and a cast of decent characters. The focus on the vibe and theme of the moments were amazing, unlike 3-4 were I barely felt anything, Yakuza 5 Remastered did a great job of setting the mood for certain scenes, although not perfect (Like suddenly switching to a light hearted segment after a really really heavy one. Other than those shortcomings I'm glad they set a focus on the mood of these scenes, massive improvement from 3-4 with story telling. Now for the actual story itself.. uh..

Combat and Gameplay

They added a new combat mechanic which I think is called rage, basically it differs for the 5 characters on the purpose (of course Haruka still doesn't fight lol) But they surprisingly have different mechanics and not just a rage button where you are basically invincible. It's quite balanced for a game mechanic. But I do have to comment about my first loss it was from the new character Shinada Tatsuo. Man where do I begin, his fighting style is incredibly slow and they aren't stunning to look at. I get that he is supposed to be the weapon master and that is where I like him. But he is flat broke and he can't buy weapons unless you do side content. I literally had to borrow the weapons from the other characters and give it all to him. He is not fit to fight multiple enemies at once unless you stack him with a full inventory of weapons, other wise, it's gonna be extremely long dragged and unflashy fight. I honestly don't know about the linear leveling system it's easier to make a choice, but it felt like I barely knew the moves because looking at the info was a pain, just like the past 2. Haruka's part was actually pretty fun as a rhythm game segment. Although I can understand why people would be skeptical/bored with her, It actually grew on me and I started to like her gameplay. It just felt weird that one of the important parts were non violent.

Story and Characters

The story was okay at least, it got tiring because of the constant plot twists towards the end, but it had an amazing start with the mood, setting, and the characters, and thank God it started with Kiryu, I can see why people would be starved for him after 4 lol. Haruka's story was actually really good and it gave me the right mood to feel in the right moment, just really good story telling and she had a good cast around her and a very good individual story prior to her relevance to the first 2 characters. I have a complaint about Shinada's Placement in the story and his existence in general. His placement in the story was SOO bad, it was all starting to come together with the 4 main character's story but suddenly there is a reset and you need to get to know another character? He was irrelevant until the end of chapter 2. Of course, I grew to love him and his quirks, but I almost took my first ever Yakuza break because of him and his uninteresting hand to hand play style where you have to use weapons, but as my complaint earlier said he is FLAT broke you can't afford the weapons. And for his existence and relevancy, it felt more like he was a guest character compared to Tanimura (Rip Tanimura sent off to America). But for my conclusion to my Shinada opinion, he was actually a really good character it was hard to notice because we were just wondering when he gets relevant. Shinada actually has a very interesting individual story prior to his relevancy to the rest of the protagonists, and he has a good cast of characters around him, but as I said, he felt like a guest character.

Conclusion

It surpassed my expectations and delivered well. The combat was comparable to 0 which is a big compliment, but what made 0 so good was it's dynamic feel of the 3 styles in 1 character. But this isn't about that. Definitely the best compared to 3 and 4 overall although this one was a bit lacking in the story itself, but it had amazing story TELLING.

9/10 Not my favorite, but it was honestly a good time.

It's great. Yeah that's it

In comparison to Yakuza 3 Remastered, this game is basically that but with fixes, so I didn't really get that wow feeling because I have always expected each Yakuza game to be different, it was like my expectations for the first Yakuza Kiwami to be vastly different from Yakuza 0 and it wasn't. But it didn't really bother me that not a lot felt changed. I mean it's really cool that you get to play as 4 different characters, but besides the better combat, nothing really felt different at all. And that isn't a bad thing.

General Things

I was extremely hyped when I found out that there was gonna be 4 different characters to play and it did not disappoint. Everyone was so different that it kept me from getting bored of the combat in this game. It's just such a treat that there is different styles, my personal favorite was Tanimura and his locking moves/jiu-jutsu moves it was amazing that they added something different from the other fighters and that they have their own distinct styles and the game generally won't let you get bored of the combat, you didn't have to make it enjoyable yourself like in 0. Of couse, the graphics, the soundtrack, weren't a let down, it's a Yakuza standard at this point, these things will never be bad or underwhelming.

Combat and Gameplay

The combat in my opinion wasn't all too impressive, it was basically just Yakuza 3 Remastered but with fixed AI and no more blockuza. It wasn't too easy but it wasn't also too hard, it was just honestly just normal so I can't really comment about. Which is why I think this has the same nitpick I had with Kiwami and 0 where Kiwami didn't really change much compared to 0.

The Story and Characters

The Pacing in my opinion is just as bad/good as Yakuza 3 Remastered, it started off extremely slow for me because of Akiyama's tutorials and unnecessary dialogue and it just generally felt really dragged, but that gave us some time to care about the characters like Kido, Hana, and Akiyama himself. I could see why some people left this game early, it didn't start off with Kiryu and they probably felt as though it was very dragged, so if you are gonna play for the story, try to keep an open mind about everything and everyone. The fan service they throw at you at this game lmfao in Yakuza fighting the main characters is just heaven like that one 2v1 fight. or Fighting Kiryu at the Beginning it was all just amazing.

Conclusion

There was honestly not a lot for me to say about this game, to be honest I didn't really play much of the side content like in Yakuza 3 Remastered and all I finished was Nair's (Tanimura's Master) substory, I'll update more about the previous ones when I come back to finish all their substories and try out some of their gameplays. It didn't really impress me all that much because I already got the adjustment to change from Yakuza 3 Remastered and not this game.

8/10 Still an amazing Yakuza game probably my favorite cast so far.

You have to make it fun yourself

The game honestly wasn't as awful as I thought it would be or as bad as some reviews say at least for me. I came in with an open mind after reading some negative and positive reviews and I could say for certain that this one Yakuza entry isn't for everyone, gameplay wise, and story wise. Yakuza 3 Remastered is a really really old game so I would not be comparing it to 0 and the previous Kiwamis. The best way I can put it is that you you have to make it fun yourself. I'm gonna talk about the positives first and then get to the negatives of each section.

General Things

I seriously do not get why people are complaining about the graphics, like everyone is saying that this is awful, what??? The cutscene graphics are amazing and the general in game graphics aren't all to impressive but you are overreacting if you say that this is awful it's good for a 2009 game. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing even with what people argue is "the worst in the series" the Yakuza series cannot make a game with a bad soundtrack. For new things, The game has the revelation system like in Yakuza 0 with some QTEs for them but they are learnable instead of story progression which can be bad or good. For the negatives, I would say the movement is pretty awful, you don't have a run for some reason you only jog. Adding to this, A truck load of people walk the streets like their purpose is blocking you and Kiryu flinches so easily that it was pretty irritating to get anywhere. This one should be in combat but this is that important. The encounters, the encounters with street fights are completely ridiculous, there is no notification whether there is someone coming after you or not, not only that, they also go after you immediately after they see you. The closest thing you can have to a notification is a voiceline and a small unnoticeable chat bubble. They will stop you in the street give you 3 lines of dialogue, and then fight you. I'm almost certain I have 2 hours of me jogging around the map and getting into almost unavoidable street fights. The progression is pretty awful too, it's basically required to get a certain amount of moves to have fun in the game.

The Infamous Combat

With positives first I like the fact that I can't mow enemies down with the same attacks over and over again because they block everything that's the thing that always bothered me about the Yakuza series so far is that it's really easy to defeat the enemies with the same things. The real problem is your options, you don't have any. It's either a weapon from the street or grabbing them if the square-triangle combos don't work. It's such a chore to fight a large crowd especially if there is large/obese enemies mixed with the fast ones, the grabbing system only works if your enemy is doing absolutely nothing and that is such a huge problem because this Kiryu is already struggling with big crowds with his bare hands now he can barely grab anyone? The damage too, it's extremely garbage you barely do anything to them, on top of playing pretty mediocre with bosses and smaller enemies you barely do anything to them and it's a completely awful experience when you are fighting a boss with a group of smaller enemies. I do like the boss fights, this one is a personal opinion of mine but I really like that they put up more of a fight than Kiwami 2 where I explained it was extremely easy. The combat itself is extremely tedious and arguably boring, but I did have some good fun and entertainment with getting around to their weaknesses and openings.

Story and Gameplay

With the story, it still follows Kiryu and the problem of The Tojo Clan being in ruins after he left to start an orphanage. The villains were honestly pretty good. The Big Fool Kanda, The smart but broken Mine, And funny English Black Monday guy. I think the villains were okay at least, and the main villain was pretty good but didn't have enough screen time to fully care about him. The kids of Morning Glory (Kiryu's orphanage) were pretty much irrelevant and their identities didn't really matter, but their existence mattered to show in contrast the other side that isn't a beat them up passionate manly man. The only complaint I could have with the story is that they gave the kids more screen time than Mine which is a really bad decision in my part because the main villain was supposed to be this guy you cared for in the end but they didn't give me enough time to understand and to give any care for him. Gameplay wise, it's pretty bad, exploration is a chore and the combat is a chore everything just feels super slow they also make you do these ridiculous searches for items, people and other stuff it felt like a chore every single time. I cannot say a positve that doesn't come from my own interpretation, hence the title you have to make it fun yourself.

Conclusion

I was expecting it to be bad, but it sort of met my expectations and slightly pass it. Nothing fun comes from this game and even the story without your own interpretations and opinions, so it made sense that people keep saying this is bad because of the justifiable bandwagon saying everything about this game is bad. Personally I found some good fun with it, but you should know that finish this game won't make you say "That was a good game." you would say to yourself Finally, it's over" and that says a lot about how much of a chore I felt of this game when I wasn't defending it with an open mind.

5/10 I only played it because I wanted to get through all of the Yakuza games myself and be a fan. I would recommend it if you are doing the same.

It's great and different, maybe a little bit too different

General Things

First, I will talk about the graphics, the open world, and just basic general things. Oh my god, the step up from quality is incredible and it fulfilled the expectations that I had for Kiwami 1. It's so cool that you don't have to transition scenes when doing things, like getting in and out of fights, getting inside building, you can even FIGHT in buildings. I think it's so cool that you can be more interactive with the area unlike the 2 previous games. The soundtrack is amazing as always. The story and characters were pretty nice, it didn't have enough time to flesh out all of them so I understand that, you will have to play the other games to get the characters and story more which is a common theme for Yakuza and other games I guess.

The Gameplay and The New Engine

The gameplay is so different from the previous 2, I'm gonna talk about the movement first. The movement, it's pretty smooth I guess? The only complain I could have is that you move out of the way way too much to avoid collision, I have no particular qualms about there not being a jog, it gives you a better feel of the human world of this game I guess, but gameplay wise I can see how people would dislike that. The New Engine is extremely goofy man it affects the combat too. For the open world experience with the engine, literally everything falls over the moment you slightly brush it everything felt way too fragile. Everyone flies around too much and I can't get the feel of caving in their faces in with them literally ascending after I punch them like 4 times the engine and the new ragdoll mechanics do not compliment each other unless you like goofy physics. The Combat was extremely underwhelming with that, all of the attacks felt really weak. The new sounds they use when you hit someone is way too "tame" I guess?

Difficulty

This game is so easy, when I was fighting one of the last boss: Ryuji, he had a katana so I thought it would be cool to match him with my own, but all it took was the same rush attacks, and SPAMMED heat actions(I think I used a heat action at least 10 times in that fight), it was ridiculously easy that I was about to be extremely disappointed, but when the real last fight showed up it made up for it sort of. Speaking of the combat, I have a complaint with the new unlocking moves system. It was extremely limited and when I was gonna unlock heat actions, all you would see is coop moves and stuff. It was extremely disappointing when I just first started playing, not only was everyone was flying around in a single hit, now I barely even have any moves to do that? I think this specific entry more emphasizes on the weapons, because I barely even needed to use the infamous tiger drop, it was nerfed to hell so there was no specific reason to even use it. The early game fights were extremely limited and disappointing that I had to google specific things I CAN do just to make myself less bored. But it's all mostly fine when you level up to have more moves and heat actions.

Final Rating and thoughts

9/10. It's still Yakuza overall. The combat was just a little bit of a downgrade.

This entry doesn't have much individuality, great game though

I just finished this game and my opinion on it is that it has little individuality compared to 0. Of course, everything would be original in 0 if it's the first Yakuza game you have every played, maybe I expected too much of big change with this one. With little individuality I mean the feel of the game is basically just like 0, combat and such. It felt more of a Yakuza 0.5 than Yakuza 1. I know Kiwami is basically a remaster of the very first Yakuza entry. But it felt like this entire game's indentity is a sequel to 0 even though it's based on the first ever Yakuza game. You basically have to play 0 to fully love this one (I did). This isn't really a negative review, I'm just leaving this because it's just a little nitpick because I expected way too much lol. I keep hearing that 0 is the best Yakuza game every so I'm not gonna expect some knocking shoes off content anymore unless I get to the parts where I don't play as Kiryu anymore.

Anyway for the good parts, I love this game, music, gameplay, graphics, characters, all those stuff. But what really caught my attention was the story and the continuation of 0. I think it's really cool that Kiryu being in prison made him forget everything we have learned in Yakuza 0.

I had no troubles with the controls or the game itself like crashing or any techincal problems, I hope they went and fixed some bugs that were happening in 0.

9/10 game, just play Yakuza 0 first

I would like it if I consider this a game

Okay, so I really like the gameplay, I'm not a military guy and I'm not very interested in FPS games but I seriously had a good time with it, good graphics, good gameplay itself. But that is where the good things I have to say about it end. First, the attachments, you seriously just cannot removed anything you put on, so it will make the quick attachment switch thing tedious because you have to press the button 1 more time I cannot excuse it or accept it, just give the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ option to remove attachment slots, what the hell? You have to have a GREAT pc to play this to a certain extent, they don't give you better optimization settings, when I play with my friend, I have to wait for years so I can finally hear him tell me he disconnected. The game is good, but literally everything else about it is so bad. It felt like the creators didn't even care about user convenience. Wanna try it? Go ahead this game isn't awful, but you should know that everything sucks, multiplayer, quality of life experience, the cheaters, and many others. You have to get past those things to actually like the game and I'm not into that, 4/10 game.
