my buddy Jim (monster bass player btw) told me one time about dude who tried to figure that out himself. he sat down with his guitar and a notebook and tried to tab out all the riffs, I guess he was gonna play it for his woman and try to woo her back after she left him for her pool guy or whatever. which i thought was kinda weird but apparently it wasn't like a pool like you would turn into a gravity bong on a hot summer day but more like what do they call it, billiards tables? apparently he was her pool instructor and dude caught her bent over the table and she wasn't workin on bridge shots know what I mean? anyway so dude was tryin to figure out the song and near as he could figure there were 42 distinct riffs, but some of them were derivatives of other riffs or repeated in a different register or whatever. I'm not good with music words, just goin on what my buddy told me here. so apparently dude never ended up finishing learning dopesmoker, not because he couldn't play it but because he couldn't remember what came where, how many times it repeated, etc. so he went to see Sleep next time they were in town and between songs he shouted to Matt Pike (pbuh) "HEY MATT HOW MANY RIFFS IN DOPESMOKER?" and Matt saw him but couldn't hear him but he threw him some devilhorns and that was that.
