Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) are an endangered great ape found only in Borneo. No orangutans live in the southeastern portion of the island, and there are three subspecies found in the northwest, northeast and central regions. Northwest Bornean orangutans are the smallest, most threatened population, with only approximately 1,500 individuals remaining, while Central Bornean orangutans are the largest group, comprising about 35,000 members. Fossil evidence reveals that these orangutans were once found throughout Southeast Asia. Bornean orangutans and Sumatran orangutans were thought to be merely subspecies until 1996, when the Sumatran orangutan was classified as a separate species. As recently as 2017, the Tapanuli orangutan of the island of Sumatra was found to be a distinct species and is the most endangered population of all the great apes, composed of no more than 800 individuals.

Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. In addition to being consumed directly by humans (often in the form of masa), maize is also used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup.[4] The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.[5] Sugar-rich varieties called sweet corn are usually grown for human consumption as kernels, while field corn varieties are used for animal feed, various corn-based human food uses (including grinding into cornmeal or masa, pressing into corn oil, and fermentation and distillation into alcoholic beverages like bourbon whiskey), and as chemical feedstocks. Maize is also used in making ethanol and other biofuels.

Toasting technology after the 1940s
By the middle of the 20th century, some high-end U.S. toasters featured automatic toast lowering and raising, without the need to operate levers – simply dropping the bread into one of these "elevator toasters", such as the Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster models made from the late 1940s through the 1960s, begins the toasting cycle. These toasters use the mechanically multiplied thermal expansion of the resistance wire in the center element assembly to lower the bread; the inserted slice of bread trips a lever switch to activate the heating elements, and their thermal expansion is harnessed to lower the bread.

A knish /kəˈnɪʃ/ is a traditional Ashkenazi Jewish[1] snack food consisting of a filling covered with dough that is typically baked or sometimes deep fried.

Knishes are usually purchased from street vendors in urban areas with a large Jewish population, sometimes at a hot dog stand or from a butcher shop. It is still strongly associated with New York City, the New York City region, and New York City cuisine.[clarification needed] It was made popular in North America by Ashkenazi Jewish refugees from the Pale of Settlement (mainly from present-day Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine, and eastern Poland).[2]

In most traditional versions, the filling is made entirely of mashed potato, kasha (buckwheat groats), or cheese. Other varieties of fillings include sweet potatoes, black beans, or spinach.

Knishes may be round, rectangular, or square. They may be entirely covered in dough or some of the filling may peek out of the top.
