Essentially what sets up the story is that on the particular continent there were originally four "Apex" species. That being Vampires, Dragons, Fae, and Shakara which are bipedal dragon-esque people (Humans forget their names and call them Drake-folk later down the line. They are also not related to dragons, it's just the closest I could compare them to). Each Species is able to create things, but in order to balance things out there is a rule of the universe which states that things cannot be created from nothing, so both the creation and the creator must suffer some kind of penalty. Fae created elves at the cost of their physical bodies, in turn Drow were made, the Drow represented everything the Fae hated and so they cast them out, making them in turn, hate the elves and seek revenge. Dragons made the dragonborn, rakes, wyverns, etc. One dragon was super ambitious and based a species off the elves, they play a huge role later but for now the "Moon Elves" are in the background.
