Among Us is an online multiplayer social and deduction game developed and published by the American game studio InnerSloth . It was released on June 15, 2018 . The game takes place in a space- themedenvironment, where each player takes on one of two roles. Most players become crew members (originally Crewmates ) and a pre-selected number of people play the role of a cheater (original The Impostor ).

The originally unpopular dozen game gained an influx of popularity in the second half of 2020 thanks to many well-known streamers on the Twitch and YouTube platforms who played the game, especially during the covid-19 pandemic . In response to the game's popularity, a sequel to Among Us 2 was announced in August 2020 , but the planned sequel was canceled in September of the same year, instead focusing on improving the original game.
