Don't be fooled by its apparent simplicity; a thoroughly engaging turn-based experience awaits beneath the retrograde surface. The level design is very cleverly crafted, and while not much unbridled skill is demanded of the player, the puzzles make you think twice about your approach, whether through basic trial and error or a tactically-minded strategy.

10/10 game. I'd easily go as far to say it's the best in the series. The relationships between the characters were more dynamic than ever and carried incredible emotional weight.

So badly optimised it's not even bloody funny. I'll update this review if I find a fix but I probably won't.

I see a lot of people dismiss this game because of the dated graphics which is pretty silly. Yes, it doesn't hold up that great, and yes, all the audio in the game is extremely compressed, but you have to consider it came out in *1998*. This game raised the bar immensely for the FPS genre when it came out. Instead of your typical 'run and gun' games which were void of any sort of narrative, HL1 entices the player with an enriched story and complex worldbuilding. The player feels involved in the setting around them and progression depended on problem solving skills in various puzzles, not just combat skill. The dynamic enemies and the increasingly more dangerous aliens keep gameplay fresh, and the vast array of weaponry is awesome, it's only a shame the sequel lacked as much variety (but more than compensated in its characters, puzzles, and story).

Overall a very good game and not just the best game of the 1990s, but possibly the best FPS to date.

I have a lot of issues with this mod which ultimately led to it amounting to a very forgettable experience. There was a ridiculous amount of backtracking and very poor level design in the first half of the game in the sewers. A lot of the time I had to watch a walkthrough to even progress in those sections. The second half of the game was a bit better. Voice acting was nothing special (which accounts for most HL2 mods). The ending was very anti-climactic, and the story was almost non-existent, which Gordon Freeman's purpose unclear until almost the end of the game. The most demeaning aspect was its uneventful and 'filler' gameplay, with almost nothing happening in huge portions of the game. There was a section of the game where you had to explore a bunch of abandoned buildings and a mansion with almost no enemies to be seen.

If you have nothing else to play, I recommend it (as it is free), but I would rather have spent my time playing something else had I known the quality was at this level. The mod adds almost nothing to what HL2 currently has to offer, unlike amazing mods like Entropy : Zero 2 and Minerva. This one falls very short of ones like those.

I absolutely love this game, just so much about it is perfect. The characters, story, level design, and puzzles make it a a game that everyone should experience at least once (unless you're like me who plays it every few months).

It's been about a year since I first played this masterpiece and in retrospect I still think it's the greatest first person shooter ever made, if not the greatest game ever made. It's just such a shame that I didn't have it growing up.

I cannot recommend this enough, and if there's a game that can even rival this it'd have to be one of Valve's other titles; Portal 2.
