This WAS the game of the year! Then Sony got their greedy asses involved where they shouldn't have. One day I pray corporate entities will realize their greed LOSES THEM MONEY! LET THE GAME BE A GAME! I PAID MONEY TO CONSUME A PRODUCT NOT TO DEAL WITH YOUR ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!

(Sony has reversed their decision, however, I'm not going to change the original content of my review, I'm just going to switch the review to positive. This cash grab they tried was unacceptable and has killed the player base of what would have been game of the year. Those responsible should no longer have a job. Let this incident be an example to anyone dumb enough to try something like that again. The PC community will not take your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and we know how to hit you where it hurts.)

Let me tell you a story to exemplify how great this game is. This is not just a game to me it’s a life long friend.

One evening sometime around February of 2016 while I was spending time with my parents and grandparents at their log cabin home in California a YouTube notification popped onto my phone screen. My family was making dinner or something and I had nothing but free time and a warm fireplace to snuggle up to. When I opened the video I was greeted by the classic Markiplier “Hello everybody my name is..”

What I had not known that evening was that I had so luckily happened to have stumbled upon the single greatest single player game of all time. From the timeless graphics to the stunning scenery I was swept from my cozy fireside couch and flung deep into Shoshone National Park.

This game’s quality is breathtaking and second to none. But most importantly, no other form of media have I found that resembles an iota of the genuine humanity that is portrayed by this game. To this day I want to take a summer and work at a watchtower. To this day I yearn to just tour that great park and witness its beauty firsthand. Few games have ever made me feel such a strong attraction.

Though I had watched the entire series Markiplier had done on the game, I remained attached to this game like a leach. When my room was remodeled two years later in the 8th grade Firewatch posters were the first on the wall. Later, in my freshman year of high school after I had spent an entire summer making money to buy a gaming setup. The first game I bought once steam had installed was none other than Firewatch.

Maybe it was the thrilling story or the equally beautifully crafted graphics that brought me to the game, but I wonder if there wasn’t another factor. Henry, the middle aged beer bellied protagonist, and I, a skinny insecure teen, had something in common with each other. We were both terribly lovesick and hopelessly depressed.

For me Firewatch became an unconscious therapy. An escape. A reminder that good people exist even in bad lighting and that opportunities exist everywhere. A reminder that nature heals and so can I.

One scene in particular stands out to me when looking back on my fond memories of this game. One day Delilah asks Henry what he looks like. Each answer responds in banter and fun, but then she asks about my eyes. And suddenly I’m not playing as Henry anymore.

For years throughout every play-through I’ve done in that game my answer was never just what Henry would have said. It was me and they were always tired. So very tired.

Since then years have came and went. Life happened and things got better. I soon had forgotten the game, but recently it’s been back on my mind. This time I hope I can finally tell Delilah that my eyes are happy.

So very happy.

I'd say It's not worth it unless it's on sale and you like it. Friends make it fun but are by no means required. Just have a mic and use it, please!
