beat this game three times, somehow still finding levels I haven't seen before

hard as nails at first, but it's a matter of figuring out how to play each level
10/10, my eyes hurt, my brain is happy

I have beaten this game multiple times throughout my life,
The more I played, the more I realized how bad of a game it actually is. The lore and story is presented in a boring way, the main quest feels like it was added just to be there and add some sense of progress.

Yet I kept coming back. Not because of the story or progression, but because of the atmosphere. Starbound could've been an incredible game, it has absolutely amazing artstyle, godlike soundtrack - everything related to vibes in this game is on point. The gameplay loop with infinite procedural generation (even weapons!!!), a ton of mobs and colorful various biomes and planets to explore - works so incredibly well. And - the lore and worldbuilding itself is great, it's just the game doesn't do it much justice.

So, in its current state - this game is (or at least feels like it) basically unfinished, and it seems like it will stay that way. Which is why the modding community has put years of effort into making Starbound into a game that it could've been.

Starbound is absolutely worth playing, and I really can't recommend it more.
But, vanilla Starbound is to be played once, maybe twice. The rest of your playthroughs are you, building your own Starbound out of everything the community has made.

The graphics somehow look realistic despite literally being flat pixel-art.
The atmosphere and AIs are so well-made that everything feels like it's living and breathing, and is ready to kill you if you make a single mistake.
The story makes you question the purpose of your own existence.

I don't even understand how you can make something this good.
Just take your 10/10 and get out. Holy ♥♥♥♥.

buy it, beat the game's base levels and delete it off your PC before you accidentally learn how to play/make user created levels well and get stuck in here for multiple years like the rest of us
