Okay I'm going to preface this review with the fact that I'm not uber Yugioh man. The only cards game I've put a lot of time a lot of time into are MTG first and foremost and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Naruto card game when I was younger. I am trying to get into it more especially since I've been getting pissed at MTG's meta recently. I did play the GBA games as a child and watched the show though. I have also modded the game to skip the grind and to change some other stuff which will be explained later. Just getting that out there.

Main Takeaway

My main takeaway for this game is that it's old...decently fun but old. There are a lot of QoL things that the older games do better (pack buying, not taking 2 years to resolve effect chains, not shuffling my hand so I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ misclick, etc) but you can get used to it. The main story stuff is passable since it's just regurgitating the plots of each season at you (standard BAMCO videogame bs).

To answer people's questions quickly: 1. Yes you can use your own custom deck in the story battles and in the duelist challenges (duels where the characters have better tuned decks...at least compared to the show). 2. No there isn't a thing where you are the main character in each setting, you just run through plot important duels. This game is not your OC or self insert trash...emulate the GBA games if you want that. 3. AFAIK multiplayer is dead as a rock. I've tried to find matches at multiple times of the day and nothing popped. You might have better luck in other regions but it's dead in NA at least. just play YGO Omega, YGOPRO, Dueling Nexus, Master Duel or Duel Links if you're looking to play with people.

Other Stuff + Modding

Listen, this game is like 4 years old so you aren't going to get every single card. Kinda messes up deck building since if you look up decks online you're going to get pissed when integral support and/or whole archetypes aren't in the game. (Sorry Dogmatika, Branded, Swordsoul, Traptrix, and other anime guy/girl card lovers). The game itself is okay but you're gonna realize that the control scheme is very, very controller friendly. Makes playing a little annoying but it ain't all that bad when you get used to it.

The campaigns themselves aren't bad either but unless you haven't watched or read the season you're going through just run your own deck. There is a certain challenge in running a story deck but I'm gonna be honest the decks the MCs run are hot garbage. I hate 'em and I didn't sit and try to deal with them. I just rolled up with my Lunalights deck and either won turn 2, 3, or 4. That made it easier to get to the duelist challenges...now that's where I think the game shines a bit. You see when you beat someone's story duel(s) (for the MCs/Rivals you have to beat their reverse duels as well) you unlock their challenge duel. Generally this involves them running a better tuned, modernized deck. Which of course leads to better duels. If you can manage to make a deck that works both for this game and for the other YGO stuff then this is a good way to practice your combos imo. Very neat.

Now onto modding...idk if other reviews have spoken about this but to me this is what makes the game good to me. There aren't a lot of mods mind you, but what is there is pretty cool. The ones that I use are "A fresh save with all cards unlocked" and "Clasic Challenge Mode". I'll also explain some of the other ones that are on Nexus Mods. Make sure to backup your save data before attempting this btw, not my fault if you mess up.

The first one I installed is self explanatory; I wanted a way to have all the cards so I could deck test and I got it. I hate grinding without a purpose, especially in a game like Yugioh where card power swings so wildly that missing one card can completely destroy your deck idea. At least in the single player MTG games I can make a tribal deck or find something similar since archetypes don't exist. This will completely ♥♥♥♥ the balance though since you can basically build whatever you want.

The second one makes it so that the Duel Monsters and GX era challenge duels use decks appropriate to the time. So they won't be pulling out Xyz monsters or Link summoning. Just something that let's me mess around with era appropriate decks without fighting for my life.

For the other mods they mostly mess with the online banlist and give either new duels/campaigns for you to go through. In the case of the new campaigns, they replace some of the existing ones. [SERIOUSLY THO they do not add new content on its own...stuff will be getting overwritten so be warned]. "Requiem" is one such mod and it adds some new challenges, alternate art for some cards, and rips some animations from Tag Force for the cards. "Soul Legacy" is for the people that want to go through the main game with better balancing in terms of the cards you get/the grind. "The Antiquities - History of Yu-Gi-Oh" runs you through the history for Yugioh by having you duel TCG starter and Structure decks from 2002-2016. It doesn't have everything but it seems pretty sick.

TLDR

All in all it game is pretty good for fighting AI and some limited deck buidling/testing. Do not come into this for proper online battling as their are other options for that and their are good FREE alternatives online. If you are a Yugioh old head and want to learn the new mechanics this isn't too bad but Master Duel has very ez to follow tutorials and is mostly free (I really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate MD's crafting system). Solid recommed for the modding content. Try to snag a key tho as it's really expensive for what it is.

This is a pretty decent fighting game, it lacks in a crucial feature but it is very good at the moment. This game does not promote a spamming playstyle due to each character having a copious amount of end lag after their attacks. This game is similar to something like Divekick, being easy af to learn but hard to master, with tense gameplay based around parrying, whiffs, and punishes. Even with this I recommend it to any casuals, you can start this up and have fun just throwing your friends around the stage. It's pretty fun...although there is one complaint. Please allow us to use our own keybinds! Both the keyboard and controller binds are horrifying for me and my friends. One was complaining that everything was too close together while I was forgetting that grab isn't bound to LT. Other than that it's pretty good all in all.
