It's hard to get a mech game wrong.

There's something about stomping around firing a barrage of missiles and bullets at smaller targets and watching them explode that's extremely satisfying. HAWKEN REBORN manages to do this pretty well. It's much faster than the average mech game and functions more like an FPS but with a mech theme, so it may not be to everyone's taste. If you're looking for a fun arcade-like experience, I think this game may have potential.

However, it also has issues. Some of which can be put down to Early Access, fair enough. But not all of them. I think the most glaring one for me is the economy. Micro-transactions already being implemented when there's barely a few hours worth of content is an immediate red flag. And the roots run deep too. Materials for mech upgrades are scarce, rarely dropped by enemies and are instead located in material deposits dotted around the map. I spent nearly half an hour in Patrol, and had a decent time shooting things, but came away with a few hundred materials. Even crafting a basic MKI weapon costs more than that...

But don't worry! You can top up your materials using premium currency!

Then there's the lack of PvP and, currently, lack of co-op too. The gameplay on offer is nothing groundbreaking but it's screaming for other players to be added to the mix. Though I'm sure such an update would add a plethora of skins and cosmetic options to the already egregious storefront and monetisation options. The AI isn't bad per se but I also found the wave-like appearance of enemies got old fast. Patrol was so much better than the missions because what should've been linear, crafted experiences devolved into "Go here, shoot things, wait for next objective". There was no horde of enemies to mow down or destructible environments to smash, instead there's just a steady trickle that barely leave a scratch.

I'm conflicted because this game simply doesn't do anything that would make me recommend it over the countless other options out there. Nothing on offer feels worthy of your time, especially if the devs consider this to be a live-service/F2P type game. I enjoyed the previous HAWKEN and remember it fondly but this reanimated, remonetized corpse just isn't the same. Maybe worth keeping an eye on, but I can't see the root problems being fixed anytime soon.

It's hard to get a mech game wrong.

We spend so much of our lives asking the question "Why?"

When we really should be asking ourselves "Why not?"

So I challenge you. Ask yourself "Why not?"

Create an optimal train loadout. Plan your route. Assign roles. Gather resources. Efficiently perform your tasks...

...Screw up big time. Panic. Shout at your friends (it's definitely their fault). Plan has gone to s#@%. The train is on fire. Where the f@#!'s the bucket?! Panic more. Shout at your friends again. Frantically throw items around. Lose your tools. Trap yourself with bedrock. Get ran over by the train. Somehow reach the station. Take a deep breath.

Now do it again but this time the train is faster!

Good game.

If you disregard Chapter 6 and the ending of the story then this game is probably the best in the franchise. However, as a whole my experience was ruined by the time I'd reached the climax. I don't know what they were thinking when they devised such an ending. Not only does it take a massive steaming dump on all you've been through in V3, it completely illegitimizes the previous games. It's already been heavily discussed on forums, other reviews here etc so I'm not going to say much else. Only that it's controversial and very divisive for a reason.

Plot aside, the gameplay here is pretty sound though. There's no drastic changes to the gameplay from it's predecessors aside from the usual minigame changes but enough to keep it feeling fresh. We still have the awkward tank controls too, which can make locating monokumas a bit annoying but you get used to it. The highlight of the game is obviously the Trials which are a blast to play. A few new mechanics spice it up, such as Lie Bullets and the V Counter/Agree. I have to point out that the soundtrack for this game is pretty spot on, with Trials being where this shines strongest. There's a couple of minigames that I won't spoil but the music fits these situations perfectly and really helps build tension. Visually, the game looks quite nice. The cutscenes are of course, pre-rendered but the setting and the Trials look a lot better than the other games. Voice acting is also done really well, making for a lot of emotional scenes and helping to flesh out the characters.

Of course, no Danganronpa game would be complete without a quirky cast of characters! Honestly? Probably my least favorite group of characters but as with the previous games, they quickly grow on you. There's a few that definitely shine. But there's also a couple that go from being amusing to just plain annoying in a very short space of time. I suppose this is part of their "charm" and you may feel completely different about the same characters. This game did a good job at constantly keeping the surviving characters interesting too, at no point was a chapter dull or boring (even if you just lost your favorite). As per usual, the friendship system returns but there's a lot of separate bonus scenes that can be unlocked too giving the characters a bit more depth. Apparently they actually do have things to do during free time instead of standing around waiting for you to talk to them.

It's a shame really, because this game does so many things right. The bonus modes (which I'm currently working my way through) are a really nice bit of fan-service and the main game up until Chapter 6 was full of emotion, mystery and that goofy anime humor making for an entertaining ride. Chapter 5 may even be my favorite in the whole series. It's basically the most polished and refined Danganronpa to date. So everything a fan could want? Maybe. If you liked the other games, you'll thoroughly enjoy this one. Just be aware the game might not end how you'd expect or really like it to.

A solid survival game with an emphasis on exploration

Subnautica has been around for a while now, spending most of it's time in early access. Thankfully, the full release is everything I wanted and more compared to when I played early in it's development. The game is quite substantial (took me about 22 hours to finish) with plenty to get your teeth stuck into.

Like most survival games, Subnautica presents you with a sandbox full of creatures and stuff to craft. Unlike most Survival games however, Subnautica throws you in at the deep end (if you'll parden the pun) and there's nobody to hold your hand. Resources are scarce, crafting blueprints are scattered across the seabed and the local wildlife aren't exactly cooperative. For once, survival isn't about killing everything else on the planet. You'll have to learn to adapt and survive by your own means. The game world is engaging and encourages you to explore, finding new resources and gear to help you progress further. As you advance, the plot will unravel and the various bits of lore you encounter will all come together. I wouldn't say the story is the best part of the game but it's by no means weak. The lack of hand-holding makes the experience feel much more organic and personal, you are the character in your own story and must choose your own path.

The only downside I can really speak for is the lack of support for the game post-launch. Some of the end-game stuff loses it's meaning when you realize the devs aren't bothered anymore (Time Capsules are pointless basically) and there are still a couple of bugs and collision issues that haven't been sorted but they're nothing major. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this game, it's one of the best survival games I've played in a while.

"Why play the first game when the sequel will surely be superior in every way?" I thought to myself as I added Darksiders II Deathinitive edition to my cart. Well turns out I was wrong, so so wrong. Darksiders II is a good game but it has a few major flaws with it's length and pacing, not to mention the awful performance of it on PC. (Though the core gameplay was still decent when it chose to work).

Darksiders Warmastered edition, on the other hand, performed flawlessly and surpassed all my expectations. It's as if the sequel was simply adding to an already perfect gameplay formula just to be able to say it was different. Combat is fast and fluid, with each weapon (of the 3) having it's own unique moveset and skills. Though at first I missed having an element of lifesteal, the enhancements throughout the game provide further means of customizing your gear without feeling too tedious (like trying to roll the best weapon modifiers in Darksiders II).

Horse combat was satisfying to pull off but admittedly the controls are a bit wonky and a single hit stuns you momentarily, disrupting the flow of combat.

Each one of the zelda-esque dungeons and it's surrounding area has it's own feel and the bosses match this pretty well. Generally you'll find that a dungeon revolves around the new piece of equipment you find inside, making each play out differently and forcing a completely new puzzle mechanic on the player. The game wears it's TLoZ inspiration proudly on it's sleeve. If you enjoyed that series, Darksiders is definitely a must-try.

The story and atmosphere of this game is the only place I'd say Darksiders II is better (at least before you reach the tree of life). At first it can be hard to grasp but as you progress through the story, it all becomes clearer with the dialogue between various characters often shedding light on plot points. War's quest feels much more genuine and organic compared to Death's, it just takes a while to get going. The atmosphere is pretty grim however. The entire game is essentially set in a post-apocalyptic Earth so expect a lot of dull and ruined environments. Other than that, the game does a stellar job at absorbing the player. Just be careful not to skip the expositional cutscenes!

Performance wise, I've had no issues at all apart from a few fps drops at in certain rooms of the game. Unlike Darksiders II I've yet to have any noticable slowdown even when there's a ton of enemies on screen too. The settings for high-end PC's are limited but as it's a remastered title, that's of no real concern. The game looks and runs fine regardless of what you run it at, so unless you're literally playing it on a toaster, you'll be fine.

If you haven't played this gem but like similar action/adventure titles, I'd strongly reccomend it. And if you made the same mistake as me playing the sequel before the original, you're missing out!

Sweat and rage-inducing with enough glitches, dodgy camera movement and just general ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to make you want to smash your pc with your face, ESJ is a solid platformer that I'd definitely recommend to anybody into similar hardcore games like super meat boy or anyone who thinks platformers are "easy".

This game does have issues, a lot of them relating to the camera either moving too far ahead or for some reason lagging behind in a game all about speed and the smash ability going through things it shouldn't. Cheap deaths aren't uncommon but the magic with ESJ is that you keep trying. No matter how difficult it gets (and I mean REALLY difficult in some stages), you'll always come back. Always push yourself to your limits, perfecting and mastering each part of the stage. Completing the game is hard enough, mastering the game is on a whole other level. This is genuinely the hardest game I've ever played. So yeah, dunno whether I love or hate Michael Todd.

You get plenty of bang for your buck, with a free holiday level expansion (which is hard as balls) and the Micro-hell expansion too. The base game has loads of levels and a lot of replay value especially if you're going for the best times, 0 deaths and all the stars. I will tell you now though, I'm pretty sure World 4 is just one big middle finger to people who thought the rest was easy. You will die. A lot. Not to say it's not a hell of a good time, the satisfaction from beating each level is amazing.

Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning the soundtrack. The very heartbeat that keeps this game alive is EnV and his fantastic music. Every level feels unique and the music often reflects how fast and aggressive this game can be. As someone who heavily enjoyed the soundtrack, I even bought it online and now have it on my phone to listen to daily. I could recommend this game based solely on the EDM soundtrack it's that good.

Not much else to say really. This game is hard, but so soooo satisfying. If you're even tempted to try it out, please give it a go. EnV and Michael Todd deserve all the support they can get for this game.

Where to start with this one? I just felt like writing a review because this game was actually pretty good.

I just finished it recently and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it. It's a very story-focused sci-fi/action thriller that manages to weave the theoretical and fictional science of time-travel into something relatively easy to follow and get into. The story is only further supported by the additional episodes unlocked throughout the game. The live action episodes play out like a sci-fi channel mini-series (no disrespect to it but it has that kinda feel) and manage to tie together the "acts" of the game very well, even adjusting to your choices at the "junctions" at certain points in the game. The acting, set design, stunts and general atmosphere was all on-point and the translation of the game world to live-action and vice versa was so well done I sometimes struggled telling cutscenes and live-action apart.

Considering this game was released in 2016, it already puts many games to shame with it's graphics, especially since they strived for realism. Although it may not be perfect for everyone (likely down to the lack of options for quality settings and forced upscaling) it plays very well and looks great doing it on my rig. As you progress through the game, a lot of the effects become more pronounced and there were many occasions I just had to stop and appreciate the visuals. The sci-fi stuff like labs and time machines look pretty badass too, whilst also being somewhat believable.

Gameplay-wise, the game does enough to keep you entertained and combat tends to flow nicely into quieter sections where you can find out more of the story and it's lore. The shooting is ok, nothing really that special and the parkour-ish sections are also a nice change of pace if a little repetitive at times. Time powers are what sets this game apart from others I've played though. I won't go into a lot of detail here but you have dash, sprint, sheild, time blast and what is essentially a bullet-time trigger (but finally one that makes sense!). Being able to slow down time to set up shots or blast people to stack up bullets aimed at their face was very satisfying. The ability to move at super fast speeds or freeze bullets in time to save your ass was also quite a fun mechanic to mess with. The only downside to this was that your character can be awkward to control at times. There is no cover button and climbing things is just simply tapping jump until he climbs. This often resulted in the character doing things I didn't want him to do.

One thing I really enjoyed, and usually stay away from, was the collectibles. Throughout the levels of the game there's a tonne of stuff to find and collect/read/listen to or just interact with. The story really gripped me which led me to read every single thing I could find. The voice acting is also really well done and the bits of lore you pick up only add to each character's personal story and motivations. By the end of the game, I actually cared about what happened to the characters and how the story would conclude.

I'm not saying this is the greatest story-driven action game out there but it really did resonate with me. It's unique and definitely worth a try if you haven't seen anything of it. This game can't have made a very big splash when it landed, because few seem to mention it. It's definitely a gem though, whether it was hidden or not.

This game is alright, but it suffers from quite a few problems relating to the enemy design and the pacing of the game itself. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this game for the most part. However, the game suffers from being very repetitive and relies on throwing more enemies at you to provide difficulty. It also has a couple of annoyances that just make it more awkward to play. So where to start?

Flying/ranged enemies- Ok so you know how much you love using that katana? Here are some enemies that fly high out of your range or stand so far back that you can't hit them with most of your skills. I say "most" because you can throw small damage shurikens or use a ranged horizontal slice (but it's very tricky to hit against flying targets). I understand that this game could be considered an fps but requiring you to switch to another weapon to kill enemies took away a lot of the fun imo. The katana is your main weapon (and the reason this game feels unique) yet the level design doesn't reflect this in a lot of cases.

Exploders (Mothers)- "I love enemies that quickly approach me and explode for huge amounts of damage!" Said no one ever. Why these things are even in the game I don't know. They're infuriating and only serve to pad out the later levels with areas that you have to take slowly. Shoot them, skill them, slice them or get near them and they blow up. If they get enraged they roll towards you and blow up. You leave them alone, they roll balls at you that blow up. Not to mention the fact they also spawn in with crowds of enemies from time to time too. Very cheap and annoying enemy design.

Tanks/sponges- Again touching upon the point about katana's being ineffective, the tanks of this game are incredibly spongy. The "fodder" type enemies are very fun to cut up and kill yet the bigger enemies completely ruin the fast-paced melee combat. There's tanky and then there's just inflated health. Try using a katana on these guys and you'll be there all day. They don't pose a significant threat alone but when there's other enemies or additional tanks added in, the combat just slows down to a crawl. It feels like a chore to get through the enemies and into the next area which moves me onto my next point...

Padding/repetition- After getting about halfway through the story I began to realize that there wasn't actually much variation to the combat or enemy spawns. The setting of each mission is divided into separate areas by doors, elevators and other blocked exits. These areas are essentially arenas for whatever enemy spawns in. After killing the enemies, you get to move to the next area and on and on. This is already pretty draining but add in the fact that the enemies attacking you pretty much always spawn in some sort of sequence, and it's just boring. Kill the fodder, tougher guys appear. Kill them, more appear or a tanky enemy spawns. The game tries to change it up by having tanks bust through walls or appear in groups to surprise you but it just doesn't improve the combat. The enemies feel like they are there to prevent your progress in the story and the game, rather than being there for entertainment. Sure, some parts were fun but the vast majority of the combat just feels like it's there to pad out the game's length.

Now I must confess this review is partly down to me venting frustration as I slog my way to the ending, but that doesn't change the point I'm trying to make. The basic gameplay with the katana is enjoyable and made me feel like a badass but it's held back by a tedious and long game. The story, setting and it's characters had me interested but again, this interest was lost as the game continued to drag. I can't recommend this game simply because in my experience, it's drawn out to such an extent that the gameplay there provides little satisfaction. It did show promise though, so maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did. Wang's "humor" and the fortune cookies scattered about gave me plenty of laughs for sure.
