I think I've played enough Humankind to finally come to a conclusion.

I like it.

But it's flawed. The game is seriously unbalanced. The only time I struggled was my first go at the game - and that was on a purposefully lowered difficulty, but I couldn't get to grips with it. I watched tutorials and got some help with my friends. My next playthrough was a lot more successful... a bit too much... after Medieval Era I was the only dominant civilisation left - with the others left decimated by my own army or falling behind through techs and civics.

"O.K" - let's restart. This time i ramped everything up to "Hard." Specifically "Empire" setting - the third hardest. This time I expected a challenge - and at first I got one, with two of 9 other Civs keeping up with me until medieval, but once again after a war with my neighbour I pulled ahead.

Now, Here's the kicker - I'm not good at these games. Like... at all. I WANT a bigger challenge, but there is some serious imbalance. I find myself "winning" before the modern era no matter the difficulty. I purposefully prolonged my latest campaign just to nuke the AI that was annoying me for the last 6~ hours. All you have to do as the player is radicalise - spend an entire era on one resource i.e food in ancient era and for the remainder of the game food is no longer an issue. And many of the higher difficulty debuffs are in combat so if you play pacifist it doesn't even affect you.

However, I still gave it a thumbs up? Why? Well, apart from balance everything else is awesome. The gameplay itself provides a unique experience - like the "Civ 7" all the ads promised. It lived up to the hype. Amplitude, once again, has proven it's art and music teams the best in the business with the soundtrack rivalling that of Endless Space 2.

The Critic reviews aren't lying to you. The user reviews aren't lying to you. If you are at all skeptical about purchasing this game please see this as a big green light - IT IS WORTH IT! But once you get to grips with the gameplay loop - make it as big a challenge for yourself as possible - even if you are artificially challenging yourself with things like "One continent" or "One city" challenges. Alternatively, play online, my friend whom I mentioned earlier has started a campaign with me and that is the closest challenge I have got since starting.

I'd enjoy it more if I was good at the game.
