Silky: Hundreds of hours of gameplay
Rough: It takes hundreds of hours of gameplay

UPDATE: Klei did an 'update', presumably to dovetail their developing DLC, and in doing so made changes to the core content that broke the game. Apologists might think this is OK, but base games should not have changes made to the core years after release. This update has resulted in 1700+ hours of seed discovery lost, unacceptable performance reductions, hundreds of mods broken. An absolute trail of destruction. After much hand wringing, Klei allowed a rollback 'beta' option but that breaks all mods that have been updated for the new version. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I've always held Klei up as the example that shines but this change is abysmal.

Don't get me wrong though. If you're new to ONI, you'll really enjoy this. If you're a returning player, who enjoys their mods or their hard earned seeds, you're going to be hearbroken.

*** HERE'S MY ORIGINAL REVIEW ***

This game. At time of writing, one thousand, four hundred and sixty two hours. That's 1,462 hours and I still haven't 'finished' it.

Let me tell you why.

In one game, on about day 50, my ladder tried to dissect an iron volcano, it looked ugly. So I started again. On the next round, I hit a chlorine vent. So I started again. On the next round I found a hydrogen vent. I built my base using hydrogen as a fuel, then the vent went dormant. So I started again. The next time, I went AFK on urgent phone call, came back and all my guys had locked themselves behind a wall. So I started again. Then I ran out of water. So I started again. Then I didn't manage my heat, my plants died, they all died. So I started again. One day I got to the surface. A meteor strike killed 2. So I started again. In my next game I was about 100 rounds in and somehow dropped all my water into the oil. So I started again. The next game I ran out of algae, I didn't have enough water. I couldn't make oxygen. They died. So I started again.

See where I'm going? In my current game, I'm at day 564. I've been playing it on and off for about 2 weeks.

My base is a mess. I think I might start again.

Silky: Fun enough.
Rough: Annoying message system!

As an EA title I hesitate to be too picky but if these guys don't kill the annoying messaging that occurs in game, they'll kill the long term playability. I mean, JFC, get an earthquake with half a dozen tenants and you are bombarded with cries for help to plaster and then they all tell you they were scared etc. etc. etc. This is on top of the other messaging that occurs. We need a quick 'read it, now kill it' button. 3 clicks per message to clear them is uggghhh! There is a setting to reduce some of it but its REALLY annoying. One of the reasons I stopped playing tbh.

And I did stop playing, at 10 hours, due to things like full house renovations being way under paid so you end up farming the easy jobs, which then means it take forever to purchase a property to put a tenant in. Sure, you can borrow but you have to grind twice as hard to pay it back because the monthly fee is far more than you get back from rent on the property. Not being able to sell them (yet?) means doing a tonne of jobs, some very repetitive, to afford the next house. It gets boring fast.

For this game to work, and kill off the tedium, we're going to need to be able reno, rent and retire properties. Instead of accumulation for its own sake, we need to be able to upgrade the portfolio. I'm sure it's in the roadmap but right now, limited fun before frustration sets in doing the same thing over and over.

A fun enough game with a progression that gives a solid sense of achievement. Worth the spend but give it time to mature. Devs seem to be listening but tbh, some decisions made here that suggests not a lot of research went into how the real estate industry actually works.

Game seems to sit between tenant management and renovations and doing neither particularly well.

Will absolutely play again if it fleshes out properly. 6/10

Silky: Visuals. Pace
Rough: Completion. Saving

I really enjoyed this game. Had a nice pace and it never felt tedious. The further you got into it, the more options you had to knock the amount of travel down and travel is something you need to do a lot of. In early game you really need to be walking around - and looking around - a lot. After a while it becomes less necessary but many pieces of the quests are to be found by discovery so you really can't go rushing around blindly too much.

Most of the puzzles, as quests, were instinctively simple and there was only one that seemed off to me and subsequent reading up suggested others felt the same. It felt like a lottery to select the right person and ultimately for me, it was. I'd need to replay the game to correct it for the achievement which is disappointing.

The order in which 2 quests were completed was also annoying because if the 2 were reversed then you cannot get one of the achievements. But there is no clue or reasoning for doing it any particular order. Because the number of save is very limited, it requires having to play the whole game again to fix it. Given it's story based, that really makes it a big call to expect people would do that.

All in all, despite the annoying completion bungles, this was a fun story with great mood and ambience and I really enjoyed it.

I did get it on special, I'd suggest you do the same. The price:content ratio felt just right.

Tried it to see if it was worth it. Saw the prices being asked, made loud guffaw and uninstalled.

Since added: I disabled comments because fanboys are defending the ridiculously high costs for modules as if I and everyone else are idiots.

That wasn't the only issue for me. It's also a case of how sustainable this is given the low player count. I queried the numbers playing this and all I got is "they're not playing it through Steam" or "they're not playing online" and all kinds of excuses why the player count is low.

(When I asked it was less than half of Xplane 11, this, a free military MP and SP sim - on Steam! A dev' piped in telling me most are not on Steam but couldn't point to where I could find that out.)

So why would people (presumably) "in the thousands" NOT use Steam as the launch platform for a free sim, given to play MP they need to be online. Where did the thousands of "not Steam" players come from given Steam is the largest game platform on the planet?

Another response after a quick look shows people asking the same questions a year ago and some of the answers then were "it's a complex sim so doesn't get many players" - which is counter to what I was told.

See, none of the claims of huge numbers of players makes sense and nor are they easily verifiable, which I found troubling from the get-go. So, given the very high investment required to play single modules and numbers around ~500, my view is this is not going to get, and hasn't been getting the love it requires - and I'd hate to see anyone waste their money on hyperbole and what seems to be pretty specific obfuscation, or at least omission when asked.

I'm happy to be wrong and good luck to Eagle Dynamics if I am, but this is Steam and I'm urging Steam users to do the research first.

In my opinion, complexity is no reason for a low count, nor do I believe there is some massive player base outside of Steam. The price is the problem, for what you get and how long it might last.

Silky: Flight Model and control options.
Rough: Poor scenics, lack of aircraft. Dependence on add-ons - yet again.

Put simply, if you have the coin for additional scenery, utilities and aircraft, Xplane 11 provides an excellent base in which to put them. There is a lot of freeware available too but as usual, some of it is simply a bad port from an older version dressed up with a coat of paint.

In a rather typical flight sim fashion, with add-ons, you'll need a minor in file management and a solid grasp of how to read instructions written by a 1 man team - who thinks everyone has been with him since version 1. I'm not sure why this still happens given most applications these days can easily use utilities like the Steam workshop and achieve all of it in simple steps.

Seriously, some utility installations are frustrating experiences lasting longer than any worldwide destination and in a few cases, nothing more than an expensive waste of space and time. With some mods, "piracy paranoia", requiring excessive registration hoops and hyperbole is acute and ends up being the most complex component of the mod anyway.

On to the sim. The control options are just amazing, the flight model is very, very good (and still being iterated on). I've had issues where my TM hotas / throttle setup is reversing inputs (I'm looking at you throttle) but the options are so numerous that EVERY SINGLE BUTTON on a mouse, throttle, joystick and keyboard combo' will not be enough.

Visually the game lacks without add-ons but if we're prepared to expect the norm is always DLC/3rd party to fill the gaps then no surprises here.

ATC is absolutely woeful and I'm not even going to begin on what that is. I'm registered with VATSIM but Australia is vastly undermanned so I've ended up using pilot2ATC.

Avionics/FMC/electronics etc. are awesome. I'm not a pilot but I've flown front seat many times and had a hand at being co' for many pilots so my (limited) knowledge says we're good here.

All-in-all a great sim. Every degree of realism above the standard package is going to cost coin but I've never known any quality flight sim to be any different.

So I finally popped the $90 needed for this, with DLC, settled in after install and took off in the first available free flight to get familiar.

Then I tried to land. Wait?? With what!? You gotta be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me, no landing gear?! I'm not meant to land.

Stupidest design decision I've *ever* seen. And don't give me it's not a "real sim". That's just crazy fanboy BS.

Refund request sent. 1/10

This is a neat 2D management/sim game that picks up easily. A few niggly UI things present early but given this is day one and it is Early Access, all can be forgiven quite easily. I'm guessing it'll wash up nicely.

I'm certainly intrigued at the potential for depth here so I think this will get a few hours each update to see how it goes. Even now, day one, I'm actually having fun here.

Certainly worth a look management simmers. For the price an easy one. No crashes*, no performance issues.

Have at it.

...................
*4 hours played: A few bugs appearing and in typical Gamemaker fashion they have a habit of crashing you out. One such bug crept into a save and killed the save so might be worth doing a manual backup occasionally to preserve a game.

....................
Thought I might record any funny things I see as I play.

- A customer drowned in an area I did not know was patrolled by a lifeguard. Got fined $200. Someone even left a review "Heard someone died in the pool today". Had a laugh at that.

- My phone rang. Was told that someone in my gym wearing a ponytail, black beard and glasses was selling illicit drugs. I was to ban him. I searched and searched and saw him. "Aha" I said, "I have you", I clicked and.... it was me. I then had to spend time looking for the *other* guy.

I did ask before I bought this "Can I relax?". They said no. They were right.

And now I'm too busy with some crazy capybara gang tearing my base down to write a proper review. I've only just finished with "Gunee" having a total meltdown and trying to torch the joint after "Cheesy" didn't like his advances and told him to F off.

Other than that.... ah F ... gotta go. A rhino just piss bowled "Craftee" and now she's on the ground bleeding and there's no-one left standing to help her up.

And I have to go to bed soon..... no, later.... no, maybe tomorrow. Wait. It is tomorrow!!

Ark: Survival Evolved or How many more ways can I piss off my user base?

Ark might not piss you off today or tomorrow, but it will piss you off. Someone, somewhere on their dysfunctional broken mess of a team will piss you off.

Mine was an out-of-control moderator who I was told was disciplined and put under review for his actions - while the result, a 30 day ban and deletion of 3 YEARS of posts remains.

Why? HE ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, they admitted it, in writing.

So that's 3 YEARS of posts helping Ark players set up servers, learn and play the game they paid for and generally try to have a good time down the drain. All while un-moderated morons intent on outright lies (many I uncovered, with proof), disruption and abuse are let go - untouched - on the community, regardless of reports or effort to correct and qualify the damage they cause.

So, well done, you pissed me off too. I'm now with the haters, same result, different reason.

You guys got lucky with Ark (as Atlas proves) and I trusted you. But this house of cards you built is coming down, piece by crappy piece.

When you decide to piss off original players who still played and who have helped hundreds of others - with your game, while you did ♥♥♥♥ all and simply collected the money - the trinkets, the promises, the specials and the season passes will only work for so long.

Genesis? Meet Revelations.

Silky: New environs, some intrigue initially.
Rough: Short lived intrigue. Boring and fast.

Surviving Mars or... how not to survive on Mars because you can't be bothered to find out what's causing the problem because by now you don't GAF.

I've been a management/sim/city builder gamer since Jesus Christ played fullback for Jerusalem so I know my way around. But the whole time I played this I felt it was missing something and I couldn't quite put my finger on it for quite a while.

Then it dawned on me that the purpose of this was, well nothing. Even with the Green Planet DLC (make Mars green right?) there was just more and more of doing nothing much while I ran the game full tilt. I mean sure, I could sit there and tinker around with my colonists needs and make them all happy but after a while I couldn't care less because.. quite frankly... they were dispensable and you don't really need that many to run a survivable base anyway. Adding more or getting bigger was just... not needed.

By dispensable, if I couldn't get colonists from Earth, I just made a few smile with a few trinkets and they got it on.... if you know what I'm saying. Even then, once I had what I needed being grown/dug/collected I literally ran it full tilt on screen 1 and did something else on screen 2.

There's just no reason to bother with half the tech tree which comes at you with what appears to be random until you realise that each location is exactly the same on each playthrough. Once you found the rare metal, your only source of income early game (except maybe "tourists"), just build there. There's no reward for harder locations except maybe meteorites that give extra metal or anomalies. Playing "hard" mode just added time to do, not a reason to try.

Game is all about spamming drones, spamming resources, waiting out the storms, building more of something, anything, just to look busy, pick a number between a few and CPU infinity colonists, send the only resource to Earth to make money and do it until you are bored ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I started playing with mods towards the "end" just to see if I could spice it up (and there is some GREAT work by modders here) but you know what, this morning I scanned the surrounds, I landed the rocket and I just..... pressed Esc and Quit.

If you like binge watching Netflix while playing video games... an excellent choice. If you like anything to do with space... a good choice. If you think putting a dome on such a hostile planet is the greatest achievement man has ever performed, and shudder in horror when you see a casino - of all things - in your list of builds, stay away.

And more, if you think we shouldn't be able to suck oxygen and water out of a barren atmosphere BEFORE we terraform - just don't.

6.5/10 - only the green planet DLC helped here so consider the total $$ required for enjoyment if money is tight.
