Lets put it like this, Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age is a Cold War naval strategy game that puts players in command of NATO or Warsaw Pact forces in large, realistic battles. Like WARNO, it’s a slower-paced game focused on strategy and realism—ships move in real time across vast distances, making it very different from fast-action strategy games. The game’s still in early access, so there are a few bugs and rough edges, but the developers are actively releasing patches to improve the experience, after just one day of its release.

To give you an idea of the gameplay, here’s what happened during my first mission: I confidently sent one of my ships to engage what I thought was a lone transport ship. Suddenly, I looked down at the map and saw 20 missiles heading straight for my ship. Panic set in as I realized there was an escort I hadn’t noticed. Somehow, after a tense fight, I managed to sink the transport and the enemy ship, without know how, but when I looked back at my other ship, it was already in flames—and three more enemy ships were closing in. Let’s just say Sea Power doesn’t pull its punches and demands you think things through, which I am not as used to in other strategy games.

The game is single-player right now, though multiplayer would be a great addition. If you love Cold War strategy and can handle a slower, challenging experience that’s still being polished, Sea Power is worth a try.
