What a haunting, melancholy experience...

To me, this is the type of game that helps define video games as art.

In the simplest of terms, Limbo is a platforming puzzle game. Moving ever forward, the player is confronted with puzzle after puzzle, some requiring pure reflex and careful jumping, others requiring a more thoughtful approach. Regardless of whether the player is manipulating objects in the environment or simply dodging lethal terrain, the difficulty in Limbo feels organic and fair. There are moments that are more challenging than others, but having just finished it, I can say that all of the puzzles have a simple solution.

But it's so much more than just the puzzles that Limbo has to offer. It's in its very name: Limbo. A space between reality and dream. A stasis between life and death. In its hazy monochromatic fog, Limbo leads the player through surreal and nightmarish landscapes. Why? Piecing together and creating the story for ones self is what makes Limbo so enthralling, at least to me. Very little is given, and for a generation of games that spoon-feed their players and hold them by the hand, the stark ambiguity of Limbo is absolutely refreshing.

I won't share my interpretations of the story/ending. In some ways, I feel that it's all very obvious, as long as you're observant.

In the end, do I recommend Limbo? Yes. If your taste is bombastic colors and sound, however, you'll find yourself disappointed. For anyone else interested in a title that encourages you to think: this is your game.

This was one of the most unlikeliest of mash-ups I think I had ever seen: Judge Dredd and a table top game? Mega City One's legendary Judge reduced to a Choose Your Own Adventure story and dice rolls? "No way," I thought, with a frown. "This can't work out well." But the Dredd fan in me was intrigued enough to buy it (for a dollar, of course, but bought I did.)

I was incredibly surprised at how much I found myself enjoying this game.

I also run a D&D campaign; writing is my life. So, walking into a text-based adventure was a fun way for me to both experience different style of table-top gameplay and also to experience different styles of adventure writing. And again, I'm a huge Dredd fan.

For anyone who is unfamiliar with this style of game, it is exactly as it sounds: a text-based adventure. You read where you are, what's going, and are then given multiple options in how to best handle a situation. While this might sound really boring, a certain amount of imagination is needed walking into this. Being able to immerse yourself in Mega City One as Dredd was really cool, and being put in Dredd's boots was a little daunting. The gameplay boils down to choosing an option, and depending on the results, rolling dice to determine the outcome. Now, as this is a computer game, some of the dice rolls made me frown; but it's all luck anyway, so I just rolled (hee hee) with the punches.

I can't discuss the story in detail (as that's the main draw of the game), but I can say it was engaging and kept my attention to the end. Classic Dredd through and through, and it managed to capture the feel of the comics wonderfully. The game is short, though, once you play through it enough to know the optimal routes. There isn't too much replayability with it aside from curiosity with some of the branching paths, but for what it was, it was a really fun adventure game.

I can certainly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of table-top games: it runs at a quick pace and the action is exciting. If you like Dredd, this is a cool way to experience a day in the life of Mega City One's Finest. If reading isn't really your thing, you might want to dip out on this. My only true gripe with this is the occasional typo: it's bound to happen with a game consisting of nothing but text, but still: a few too many sprinkled throughout.

But I don't think a few typos would land you any more than a verbal warning, 100 credit fine max.

As a fan of Gatchaman!, Voltron, Tekkaman Blade, and Robotech I had an absolute blast with this game. As a matter of fact, when I watched the trailer for it, I had to double check online to make sure this wasn't an adaptation of a more obscure series. The creators get mad points for that.

So, at its core, Vulkaiser is a horizontal bullet hell shooter. Coolio. In keeping with its theme of retro anime mecha, your core mech is equipped with a standard, but weak, vulcan cannon. A charge meter at the bottom of the screen constantly fills up as you shoot: activating it fires off a more powerful shot. In addition to your core mech there are four other parts to the Vulkaiser that you can combine with during each stage, each with its own unique weapon. A cluster of missiles, a close-range drill, a weak but screen-filling spread shot, and a wide electric attack. The idea of mixing and matching your mech on the fly reminds me of an older NES shooter, Mag Max, although Vulkaiser is more fleshed out.

With all of its various mech parts and special weapon gauges, is Vulkaiser worth playing? Yes. I was able to beat the game in my first attempt without dying. I came close by the end, and two of my partners had to bail a la Starfox, but it was doable. But what's cool are the multiple levels of diffculty. Too easy your first playthrough? Crank it up a level. I can see myself coming back to this in the future to try out the harder diffuculties.

Is Vulkaiser the best shooter I've ever played? No. But it's certainly fun and what it lacks in depth in makes up for in style. Totally worth a buy if you're a fan of the genre or of classic mecha anime. Rick Hunter would be proud.

Metagal isn't everything I had hoped for, but what it offers is still quite fun. Does that make sense? Because I literally sat here and spent about six minutes trying to figure out how to begin this.

So. Straight out of the gate. is Metagal worth a buy? Yes. Is Metagal the shining successor to Mega Man? No. But it's still fun.

I feel bad for Metagal because it journeys into the ever dangerous territory of "Clone". It's a Mega Man clone, through and through, but it still does enough on its own to merit its own accolades. But because it's a clone, the Mega Man fanbase will sink their claws into this and tear it apart. Follow me now...

Metagal's story is classic Mega Man: scientist makes robots, bad guy repurposes them. Metagal is the only bot in town to save the day! There's some ProtoMan flavored subplots thrown in, but it's all just whatever. You shoot bad bots. That's all you need.

At it's core, Metagal works. You jump. You shoot. You use special attacks to defeat enemies and traverse the stages. Cool. Just like MM. Nearly everything about the game is a direct lifting from MM: level design, ladder climbing, doors opening, enemy design, using certain weapons against bosses due to their weaknesses, etc. There are some differences, though: Metagal fires in three shot bursts. No single shots, no charges. Just bursts. Different, a little weird here and there, but pleasantly different. Instead of finite weapon ammo, Metagal gets an ever recharging gauge. This adds a nice touch to the tried and true gameplay we know from MM, so I welcomed it. There are only four bosses to gain special weapons from, two of which are incredibly useful, so not having to worry about finding ammo power-ups was a nice change of pace.

Here's a big deal: you have infinite lives. You have. Infinite. LIVES. For anyone that writes this game a negative review because it's "too hard" or because "Fortress Area 3 is too hard", please remember that you have infinite lives. You do. Granted, you respawn back at every check point you pass, and you can techinically earn lives (Rebirths) that respawn you at the exact room you died in, but listen: infinite lives, infinite continues. For anyone who grew up playing OG action games, you'll know what that actually means.

And really, Metagal isn't that hard. I beat it in a single two hour sitting, even collecting all of the hidden power-ups. Died a few times here and there, took me a while to figure out to beat the final boss' first form, but I did it. It's doable. The graphics were colorful and the music not terrible. so it was a pleasant ride. If you can find this on sale, give it a whirl. While it's no Mega Man 6 (my personal favorite), it's certainly a playable and enjoyable action platformer in its own right.

For $0.50, this game is well worth the purchase. Is it the best arcade-style shooter? No, but that's okay, because the quality far exceeds the price tag.

If you're familiar with Asteroids, then you'll understand this game. Fly through space, shoot stuff, and make that score number grow. That's it.

Now, to liven it up a bit, there's a ton of different weapons and ships to unlock and choose from. Pretty cool, right? It is. BBXL isn't perfect, though: the auto-propulsion and turning radius of the ships makes controlling your craft a little difficult. Precision shots are hard to pull off, and when there's a ton of stuff on screen, it can become very difficult to make out exactly what's happening. Adding to all of that is the ammo system, which technically makes sense, and while adding a slight sense of strategy to the game, can become hectic in later parts of the game.

But seriously, it's fifty cents on sale. This is a game I can see myself popping on every now and then, determined to break my old high score. And isn't that what the old greats were all about?

Alright, look: I got this for $0.50. A pint of store brand orange juice is $0.79. This cost less than a refreshing morning beverage.

Was it worth it? Yes.

So what's the story in ORCS? You kill orcs. Why? Because they are bad. That's it.

The graphics are super simple, the music is super simple, and the controls are super simple. What this game makes up for in content over production value is difficulty. This is tough. Oftentimes kinda cheap. But I beat it, so you can, too.

If you have two quarters you can part ways with, ORCS is a fine investment.

As a massive fan of H.P. Lovecraft I can whole-heartedly recommend this game. As a massive fan of rogue-likes, as well, I can recommend this game. Eldritch delivers a simple objective: escape the confines of a cursed library by collecting the three hidden souls of famous Lovecraft beings. Good luck getting to them, though: this game is tough.

The controls are straightforward: you can run, you can crouch, you can punch, and you can use items and spells. Items include weapons ranging from rocks and knives to pistols and wire trap guns. Spells grant you the ability to open locked doors, hide yourself, or charm enemies. The occasional piece of gear also grants you the ability to run silently or disregard fall damage. These items are important because they're your best bet for getting out alive.

The core elements of Eldritch are executed very well: survive the ever-changing dungeons of Lovecraftian horror by sneaking and/or fighting your way past a multitude of cultists, lizardmen, shoggoths, and other UNNAMEABLE horrors (thumbs up if you get that reference.) Every floor is fraught with tension and peril as the atmospheric music and groans of the otherworldly follow you wherever you go. Considering the game gives an achievement for beating it in under 10 minutes or less, it's pretty cool to know this game is actually really short, but also really hard. I died more times than I count, but I never felt cheated.

Overall, I say this game is definitely worth a buy. It isn't a scary or horrifying game, but it has atmosphere in spades and it's a fun take on the classic Lovecraft formula. The always shifting and changing dungeons fit the source material very well. Yog-Sothoth would agree: this game is cool.

This game was everything I wanted it to be: a frenetic, colorful shooter reminiscent of the days of Toaplan and Treasure.

The story is simple: humans and aliens don't get along, so what happens? We go to war. We send the Super Galaxy Squadron out to rock some socks. And boy, will socks get rocked.

First and foremost, there are a vast amount of different ships to choose from. Do you like slow and powerful? Fast but weak? Concentrated fire or spray and pray? The combinations of primary fire, secondary fire, and hypers ensure that there's a perfect match for every style of play. A nice addtion to the selection of ships are short character bios for each pilot. It didn't affect gameplay at all, but it was a nice touch. My favorite was the gelatinous purple alien.

So with all of these awesome ships to choose from, how's the core game play? Very good. Destroy enemies to fill your hyper gauge, and when it's full, release your hyper attack. If you can get your score multiplier all the way to 10 and then use your hyper, your ship will enter into Overdrive and release a potent barrage of attacks. There's a subtle sense of strategy involved with knowing when to use your hyper which adds an extra level of skill to the game.

SGS: EX provides an arcade/story mode replete with auto-saves and checkpoints. Feel like that's too easy? Set the game to max difficulty and turn off the health items and checkpoints. The ability to cater to all skills levels was a nice touch. Aside from arcade, there's also Endless mode where I spent two hours the night I downloaded playing as every character. You know what felt good? SSS ranking one of my sessions. The Endless mode alone is worth this purchase.

Buy this. The pixel art is great, the music is fantastic, and it's a very competent shooter. If there was an issue I had with it, I would say that the screen can become a little too cluttered with your bullets, enemy bullets, and hyper tokens. Especially with the final boss. Hot damn, that was rough. But the feeling of satisfaction upon beating this game felt so good.

How do I describe this game, this series? Visceral. Animalistic. Euphoric.

Lightning fast and without mercy. What's the object? To kill.

Hotline Miami 2 is a superb follow-up to its predecessor. The gameplay is virtually identical, albeit with a few new additions here and there. The story is cryptic, misleading, and confusing: everything it should be. Deciphering the maze of death, spilled blood, and drug infused trips is half the fun. I won't give anything away, but piecing it together, as well the events from the first game, was satisfying.

Personally? My favorite aspect of this game was the music. Hard hitting synthwave pumps out hard. Mitch Murder, Carpenter Brut, El Tigre, Mega Drive: this OST is insane. Hearing "Acid Spit" from Mega Drive's 198X album put me directly into the game.

Ultimately, is HM2 worth buying? Yes. Aim for a sale, but even at full price it's worth it. If frenetic twin stick shooting is what you're after, you'd be hard-pressed to find a game better than this.

*Update* I've read a few aother reviews saying the game suffered from poor level design and enemy placement, i.e., getting shot from off screen and a reliance on "cover shooter" tactics. I can see what they mean, but personally, I didn't feel the game wasn't that much different than the first. The new enemy types at the end changed up the flow and kept it from being stale. It really isn't all that bad.

What a game. What a strange beast of a game. Part twin stick shooter, part platformer, Savant - Ascent is a whirlwind of color, music, and exploding robots. It's also incredibly bizarre as you play a Guy Fawkes lookalike alchemist whose goal is to retrieve an orb that has the essence of a purple Mario clone called "Vario" in it and...yeah. It's a weird game. But it's pretty fun, too, and that's important.

As you play Savant - Ascent, you hop from one of three platforms, dodging enemies and their incoming fire all while firing back at them. That's it. That's the whole game. It's super simple. As you progress through the levels, you can unlock record pieces that, when fully formed, not only grant you new music to listen to, but new upgrades to your own weapon. Very straight forward, but it works well.

Savant is extremely short, however; with determination, you can probably beat it in a sitting, 100%. It's tough for sure, but nothing patience can't fix. If I had a problem with it, it's that when you aim at an enemy, the camera pulls towards them, leaving you blind in the opposite direction. Expect many, MANY, deaths because of that. But still...what to make of the mish mash of steam punk, EDM, and weird Mario insertions?

Fun Fact: I was at work the other day (a supermarket) when I saw a customer walk by with a t shirt with this game art on it. I thought, "Oh, wow, that's cool! I didn't know this game was so popular!" I talk to him about it and learned that Savant is actually an EDM artist. The game, Savant - Ascent, is actually a strange side project featuring his music. IT SUDDENLY ALL MADE SENSE.

I think I got this for a dollar. Buy it. It's worth the one dollar.
