I have a soft spot for twin-stick shooters: they're some of the purest arcade style shooters available, and with the simplistic control scheme joined with the even simpler gameplay style, I'm very rarely disappointed with them. Is Waves worth a check out? You betcha.

For anyone that doesn't know, a twin-stick shooter is exactly that: the left stick controls you, the right stick aims where you shoot. Easy peasy. The arcade classic Asteroids can be seen as one of, if not the, first twin stick. So with Waves the premise remains the same: see brightly colored geometric shape, aim at it, and watch a pretty display of particles explode out from it. The more shapes you blow up, the more points you get. Blow up enough shapes in quick succesion, the higher combo you attain. High combo means more points. Points are life.

Waves breaks up the monotony by implementing a slow down mechanic based upon an ever replenshing gauge: use it to get out of hairy situations or to rack up bonus points. Waves also utilizes a bomb system in which you're awarded bombs based upon your score, but only for a short moment. Miss your chance to use it and it's gone.

Waves has a nice selection of gameplay modes, but if there was one issue I had with it, it's that they're all a little short (except for Survival of course.) Each mode has its own score boards, which is cool, and the variety keeps the game from becoming boring.

The visuals are nice, the music is pleasing, and the gameplay is tight. If you like Geometry Wars, or simple arcade shooters in general, this is certainly worth the purchase.

I was immediately interested in this game when I saw it was released by the same people who made Mutant Mudds. After watching the trailer for Xeodrifter, I was hoping to play a well-crafted action adventure game that hearkened back to the days of Metroid and Blaster Master. I'm happy to say that is exactly what I got.

The premise of Xeodrifter is incredibly simple: your ship needs a new warp core and unless you want to be left stranded out in the depths of space forever, your only option is to explore four nearby planets and seach for a new core. As you explore each planet, you'll slowly uncover a plethora of health and weapon upgrades, as well as new abilties to help you on your way (rocket jump, submarine, etc.) There is no text in the game and that's okay: it helps immerse the player in the atmosphere of the game.

That being said, the gameplay pulls through and makes Xeodrifter a fun play. While the controls are slightly floaty, the game moves at a nice pace. You have a selection of upgrades to choose from in upgrading your energy shot which allows for a little customization. As you uncover more and more upgrades, the difficulty of the game slowly ramps along with your progression. This, and the integration of your new abilties, keeps Xeodrifter from becoming boring or repetitive; as the game is only a few short hours, it doesn't bog itself down or drag itself out.

So. The graphics are colorful, the music is fantastic, and it plays great. It covers all the bases well. Buy it. If you're fan of classic Metroid action/exploration, you owe it to yourself to get this.

This game was an absolute blast and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender is a side-scrolling shooter modeled after - you guessed it - the classic arcade game Defender. If you're not familiar with Defender at all, the premise is pretty simple: fly left or right in looping stages shooting all in your path while gaining power-ups and occasionally saving the odd human or two. Or in Aqua Kitty's case, cats.

The story is simple and silly, the graphics are bright and vibrant, and the music is amazing. So what about the gameplay? Well, if you like Defender you're set. The controls are responsive, the shooting is satisfying, and the difficlty ramps nicely. There are plenty of different enemies to defeat so the game never becomes repetitive. It's a tad short, but with three difficulty settings and an Endless Mode, there's plenty of replayability.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. If quirky arcade shooters are your thing, this is the game for you.

As an ardent Lovecraft and RPG fan, I whole-heartedly recommend this game.

If you're familiar with Breath of Death VII, then you already know what this game is like. If you're not, read on...

CSTW is a light-hearted homage to both the classic JRPG's of yesteryear as well as H.P. Lovecrafts work. In this game, you play as Cthulu, cosmic horror supreme, who undergoes a bit of a dilemma: rather than destroying the world, Cthulu is tasked with saving it (hence the name.) Along the way, Cthulu encounters many different characters and locales, many of which are pulled straight from Lovecraft's stories. Some help and join you, while most just want to fight.

As for the core gameplay, it's traditional turn-based RPG fare. You choose your options, watch everything unfold, and go for it again. There are plenty of characters to mix and match for your active party, all of which obtain their own unique skills and abilites. The level-up system from BoDVII is back, giving players a choice in how they want to build their characters upon gaining a level. Simple, but it adds a nice sense of strategy. The good ol' "stand next to a save point and grind out all of the battles in an area until they're gone" strategy is still the best way to break the game, so that's nice.

Overall, the game is fun and quirky. It's not very deep, and especially with the Diablo III's and Skyrim's and WoW's out today, CSTW might seem a little too simple. But RPG's started somewhere and this game does a fine job at looking back lovingly.

If you're a fan of either classic RPG's or Lovecraft, this is a solid buy.

What a delightful game. My friend suggested it to me, and having both beaten and enjoyed it, I can say that it was worth the price.

Momodora III is an action platformer, pure and simple. No puzzles, no fetch quests, no level system: just action and platforming. The player is given two different characters to choose from, along with a wide variety of upgrades and power-ups hidden throughout. The gameplay is simple, but effective.

It's the style of the game, however, that really makes Momodora worth playing. The simplistic 8-bit graphics are vibrant and well-animated, with lush, ethereal environments to explore. The music is fantastic, offering a collection of energetic synth melodies at times, while giving haunting chords others.

The story is scarcely given, but it does exist. It's the blending of it all that creats the experience, not any one facet. And clocking in at about 50 minutes, the game is short and sweet. Go buy it.

There is one glaring flaw in this game that prevents me from giving it the full score I originally wanted: the profanity.

Yes. This game uses both s*** and f*** very frequently and it stunned me when I first heard them.

Super Star Path has all of the aesthetics of a great mid-90's shooter: colorful, vibrant graphics; great music reminiscent of a by-gone era; solid vertical shooting; and a unique implementation of Bejewled style puzzle gameplay. Players scroll upwards, shooting everything in their path. But, there's a twist: wisely choosing which enemies to defeat to grant an optimal path is necessary. Essentially, defeating enemies of a common color results in a chain reaction, thus giving you more room to move. But, every enemy adjacent to the last defeated enemy will turn into a crystal, blocking your way. On top of this, each stage has three power-ups and three emeralds to collect. While this may sound tedious, unlimited lives and continues coupled with a great gameplay choice in allowing players to keep everything they've earned (even if they haven't completed the stage yet) make SSP a very balanced game.

There are a variety of ships to choose from, each granting the player different immunities and power specs (which can be upgraded as long as the power-ups are found.) Simply put, the game has great variety.

But. During gameplay your pilot will speak and comment on the action at hand. When I got hit at one point he exclaimed, "What the f*** was that?" Another time he said, "I'm too old for this s***" While this may seem dumb and inconsequential, it's completely unnecessary as he repeats it over and over (especially late game where the challenge increases.) No solid arcade shooter back in the day needed content like that to be good. It's abrasive and it clashes terribly with the colorful 16-bit aesthetic it boasts. I sorely implore the developers to patch those words out. Even if the pilot says the classic, "I'm too old for this" and cuts the word out, it would be fine. As it is though, I can't recommend this to everyone because of that content.

Super Star Path is a fantastic game to play that is limited terribly by the weirdest and most unnecessary inclusion of profanity I've ever seen in a game. Be aware of this when you buy it.

I just turned this on for the first time and beat it in a sitting. Will I ever play it again? No. But was it worth the $0.50 sale price? Sure.

I really, really, REALLY hate to say this, but the worst part about this game is the graphics. Try and look at the pilots without grimacing. Try it. Bet you can't. The core game looks well enough, albeit very simple and bland.

So how about the game itself? It starts pretty simple: shoot some bullets, dodge some bullets. The difficulty slowly ramps through a surprisingly long arcade mode. I'm a bit of a vet and the last few stages had me going. So there's that.

Soooo...is this game worth buying? If you really like top down shooters, go for it. Taoplan, Cave, and Treasure it is not. But for $0.50? Meh. It was enteraining enough. I still skipped right through the story because those faces were god awful to look at, though.

I've heard so much about this game over the past four years. I was pretty skeptical of all the hype and glowing praise this game has received, but never one to judge unfairly, I picked this up on sale for about $5.

Bastion is good. It is very good. I don't think it's the greatest indie game to have been made, but I can certainly see why people like it so much.

At its heart, Bastion is an isometric hack'n'slash with small elements of dungeon grinding. You have a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, and a special attack. That's it. You can guard and evade roll, but you essentially only have three attacks the whole game. To make this simple formual work you are granted nearly ten different weapons to choose from, all upgradable, and all of which have their own unique special attacks. Further expanding on the simple gameplay is the ability to equip various drinks to give yourself buffs (i.e. extra damage, extra health, etc.)

The game is balanced pretty well. I'm a vet myself, so I didn't have too much of an issue playing through this. There were a few hairy moments here and there, but ultimately Bastion isn't too hard. Unless you want it to be. In which case you can invoke the power of the gods, thus augmenting the enemy builds. While you can make them faster, more agressive, and sturdier, you also get an EXP and money boost for your trouble. Very well balanced.

So the controls are tight, the gameplay is good, so how about the story? I won't give anything away, but it worked. Nothing too crazy, but it held my attention and inspired me to push on. The story itself might be simple, but the biggest draw of the game is the narrator. This was one of the biggest things I heard about this game: the narrator. All I'll say is: play it and find out on your own. It's pretty cool.

While only clocking in at about 6 hours, Bastion manages to give an engrossing and surprisingly deep gameplay experience. Between listening to the narrator and watching the hand drawn world literally fall into place with your every step, Bastion manages to combine tight action gameplay with a unique art driven narrative.

Go buy it.

I played this game back when it first came out on the PSN. At first I thought it was going to suck, being just some dumb cash-in on 80's retro.

I ended up loving this game.

The first time I played it was with a friend and we co-opped it in a single sitting. Playing it again, solo, I still had a blast.

For anyone who doesn't know what Double Dragon is, DD was one of the pre-eminent beat 'em ups back in the day. Many series tried to emulate the simplicity of punching, kicking, kneeing, throwing, and spin kicking mobs of bad guys into bloody submission. Few achieved their goal.

And that's really all DD is about: beating the tar out of a colorful cast of villains. The plot is paper thin, and that's okay, we're not really here for the story. DD Neon updated the tried and true formula DD 1 and 2 perfected by adding a ton of special moves and character builds to the mix. That might sound pretty not Double Dragon, but it actually adds a nice bit of depth to simple gameplay. Want to excel at offense? Defense? Physical attacks or special moves? Want to throw a fireball? Some lighting? How about a head crushing knee drop? The options are varied and allow the game to cater to many different play styles.

The graphics are bright, colorful, and varied. The music is insanely good, offering plenty of original tunes as well as some sick remixes of classic songs. And the controls are good. A little slow, but it gives the game a nice pace.

A game like this is why Wayforward is one of my favorite developers. A Boy and His Blob, Ducktales, and Double Dragon: they take classic games and create playable love letters to them.

If you love DD, play this. If you haven't played DD before, but enjoy good arcade style action games, play this.

What are you waiting for? Hurry up, buttlord!

I heard so much about this game when it was released. I heard it was terrifying. I heard it was amazing. I heard it was a blast.

It is none of those things. It's not bad, not at all, but it's not going to redefine what you know about horror.

Outlast is a first person horror adventure with an emphasis on stealth. When I say, "Emphasis on stealth" I mean, "There is literally no combat at all, or any kind of defensive maneuver's for that matter." You can hide in and under things at times. But mostly you run and breathe heavily.

Outlast: Panting the Game.

The problem I have with this is that I've played Condemned: Criminal Origin. Similar premise: you're attacked by insane humans in ratty, delapitated buildings. Except in Condemned, you could pick up a pipe or four-by-four and use it as a weapon. In Outlast, the main character seems to have never learned how to swing anything at anytime in his life. The enemies are mostly just normal people. Hit them. There's plenty of debris laying around.

But. As stealth is the order of the day in Outlast, you'd think it would be taught and suspensful. Eh. The game breaks down like this: Enter new area. Realize you need X amount of Something to open The Other Thing. Run around blindly for a minute, dodging the marauding bad guy until you find those Somethings and run back to The Other Thing.

Now, the biggest issue with this cat and mouse gameplay is that 90% of the game is pitch black, leaving you to rely on your camcorder's night vision to help you see. Two major problems with this: 1) Your camcorder must be a model from 1994 because your battery life is butt. Every 20 seconds you need to replace a battery. And 2) Any cool environment or spooky atmosphere is lost to the player because the whole game is seen via night vision. I get what they were going for, but it just makes the game frustrating, not scary.

I won't mention specific enemies or moments because I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. It is interesting, albeit a little simple. The atmosphere is nice, the locale is large (though mostly the same crusty halls over and over and over with rain streaked windows), and the game does look really nice (when you can actually see anything.)

It's just repetitive. The game devolves from survival horror stealth to just holding the run button down and side-stepping bad guys. If you like horror and can find this on sale, check it out. Just don't expect it to blow you away.
