This is my kind of horror.

Surreal, nightmarish, grotesque, with an emphasis on atmosphere and isolation. Atari 2600 style graphucs, Rotoscopes MS Paint cinematics, and modulated voice lines. This game is amazing.

Just short enough as not to make its simple gameplay a bore, but just long enough to feel as if you got your moneys worth. Please buy this if you like horror.

This was absolutely amazing. As far as Metroidvanias go, this was super solid. Graphics are good, music is good, control is tight, and the story is very well written. It feels like a remix of Aria of Sorrow.

Its pretty easy though; I only died once and it was because I was rushing and not paying attention. Seriously, give this a go.

Alright. I know this didnt go over well with most fans, but honestly, I didnt think it was that bad. Its not great, but on sale, sure, give it a shot.

First. This is not a reboot. It is technically a sequel as the game is self-aware that the Toads havent had a game in like 26 years. The vibe and tone of the game is a PG-13 Saturday morning cartoon. Different than the gross-out 90s edge humor the series started with, but there are moments where it was actually pretty funny. If anything, the cutscenes are fun.

As for the gameplay, it is kinda close to the original game. Beat em up sections broken up by gameplay sequences that have nothing to do with beat em ups. The NES game had the rappelling, air bikes, snake riding, and monowheel. This had its fair share of Not Beat Em Up minigames. I do think they lasted a bit longer than they should have, but it is what it is.

This wasnt the Battletoads update everyone wanted, but to be completely honest, the Toads' games were never super amazing to begin with. They were style over substance and were way too hard for their own good. Play this and just go along for the ride. If they make a sequel to this I hope they focus on the combat like the arcade game rather than the minigame shenanigans.

Pick this up on sale.

I really wanted to like this. I really, really did. Like many other people that have posted positive reviews of this, I, too, started this way back when it first came out. I think I had got the Monolith Double Pack from Target (remember when they had the PC games next to the book section?) and it came with Shogo and Septerra Core. Back then playing PC games was a novelty for me since I grew up a console player, so I was happy to have them simply because they were PC games.

Now? It's just okay. I appreciate how much effort went into the story, dialogue, voice acting, and spell system. But the core gameplay just doesnt stand up. The utter lack of music, while supposed to be immersive, is boring. Ambient wind and machine humming, combined with the lack of the sound of your characters running, feels empty. It isnt engaging. And combat moves so slowly I started to get bored two hours in. And what I played the first two hours is what Ill be playing the rest of the game. I dont mind if the graphics are dated by todays standards. I dont care. Games today will look dated in 20 years. Its the lack of variety to the gameplay thats holding it back.

Look, I love OG RPGS. I love Dragon Quest 1-4, Chrono Trigger, FF 1-6, etc. But SC just plays so slowly, and so devoid of vitality, that it becomes a slog. It reminds me of Phantasy Star II, just without the music. Nostalgia for starting this back when I was 13 is nice, but I dont think it can carry me through to the end.

Sigh...this was not as good as I wanted it to be.

I loved Next Encounter back in the day. Thing is, this is the first entry in the series and they hadnt quite found their stride. Its boring. You fight waves and waves and waves of the exact same enemies the entire game. Skeleton horses, bulls, rinse and repeat. It just gets so super repetitive. I dont mind the core essence of Serious Sam (circle strafe like no tomorrow) but this didnt quite hit the mark for me. Ah well. Every series has to start somewhere.

I read that the developers had originally wanted this to be a short game, a brief venture into Hell. They were later told they needed to turn it into a full length title which is where many of its problems come from. That sucks, because this could have been kinda cool if it was shorter.

You walk. You see spooky stuff. That gets old, but you keep walking. It's very dark and maze-like so you dont know where youre going. That's uh...that's it. This game is super boring and the shock wears out really quick leaving you with a plodding game play experience. Yeah, that's pretty cool, right?

I appreciate the idea, but this just isnt very fun to play.

Edit: I finally beat this and it didnt really get better.

"Hard For The Sake of Hard" does not make a good game.

I've played challenging 2-D action platformers. Actraiser 2, Castlevania: Dracula X, Demon's Crest, Shinobi III, etc. Those games, while extremely difficult, are balanced because the player is given ample amounts of options in dealing with the difficulty. Even 3-D games like Godhand, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Devil May Cry 3 give the player enough tools to find the proper means of succeeding.

Slain does not. At all. You get a 1-2-3 mash combo, a charge attack, a block, a back dash, and a magic projectile. The problem with all of these things is the timing.

Your attacks are slow with wide open gaps in between slashes. Enemies are damage sponges with super armor that walk through your slow attacks and hit you out of your attack. You also move forward during your combo which pulls you closer to enemies that then hit you. This results in having to space out weak 1-2 attacks and stopping your full combo so you dont take accidental damage.

Your charge attack takes too long to charge and deals far too little damage. It also locks you in place while you charge it which guarantees you getting hit. And if you do get hit, it cancels your charge.

Your magic attack deals virtually no damage. If you charge it it still deals no damage, but then you might get stuck in place charging it.

Your backdash can't be used while youre attacking or blocking. So its pretty useless. Actually, the only way I used it for was jump dashing over enemies.

Your block doesnt block damage. It blocks increments of damage that increase the more you use it which de-incentivizes the player from using it.

Sluggish movement, slow attacks, poor timing with all movements, and enemies that literally walk through your attacks all adds up to a very unfun and frustrating game. Making all of this worse is the constant isnta-death traps and one-shots from enemies. Oh, and you don't get any upgrades other than elemental auras for your blade. No double jump, no forward dash, no extra sub weapons, no new magic, no slide, NOTHING.

The aesthetics are cool. That's about it. If you want a good hack and slash go play Bloodrayne: Betrayal. If you want a game with cool metal music go play Doom.

I wanted to like this. I really did. The screenshots looked simple, but fun.

And that sums up the game: simple. There's no story, no real explanation as to why you're doing what you're doing. You're just...doing it. And all "it" is is rudimentary action platforming, which would be fine, if it wasn't for the super amateurish feel to the whole game.

And look, I give devs props for even making a game. I havent. But if youre going to put a product out, please make sure its A) fun, B) worth someones time, and C) complete. I couldnt finish a level because the goal never appeared. So...I stopped playing.

Honestly, this reminds me of something Psygnosis would have put out back in the day if Psygnosis was one dude with no experience. I feel bad being so harsh on this, but I paid money for it and I feel like I wasted it.

Play something else.

I really want to love this game. I really, really do. It has so many good things going for it: sharp visuals, great music, a nice sense of humor and personality, and decent variety of weapons. Great. Except what's not great are the sudden spikes in difficulty that result in instant death through no error of the player.

Example: I just beat the third boss. I have the best equipment available through drops. Ive played through the secret areas to get better drops and even got a rare glitched weapon. Ive been upgrading my one mini nuke pretty well. I load into a stage, move up for one second, and get one-shot from an enemy off screen. Yeah, that's REAL fun.

And it wasnt just the one time. It happens often. Numerous runs were stopped dead due to insane raises in difficulty. And look, I like hard games. Ive beaten Ikaruga; Ive 1 CC'd no death'd Castle Shikigami II. I know my way around shooters and I love twin-sticks. I love rogue-likes. This should be perfect for me.

But having weapons overheat within mere seconds turns a game that should have been fast and frenetic into a slog. Move forward a bit, shoot, back up, repeat. Weapons that one shot super elites barely dent the bosses. This game needs some refinement and balancing tweaks.

Go play Assault Android Cactus. Go play Iron Crypticle. Go play something that doesnt rip a 40 minute play sessions away from you through no fault of your own.

I tried. I really did. As someone who grew up during the 90's FPS boom I remember what a big deal this game was supposed to be. And yes, I remember the infamous magazine ad Romero put out.

Is this game really as bad as they say? No, but its still not good. I give it all the props in the world for the direction in plot and storytelling, but dude, save gems are a terrible idea. I didnt like the idea of save coins in Donkey Kong Country 2 and I dont like the idea here.

Its definitely not the worst FPS Ive ever played, but its pretty far from the best. Give it a whirl if you find it on sale just dont expect the long lost cousin to Doom.
