Part of me appreciates what this game wants to be. It straddles the line between Zelda-style action and exploration and a surreal existentialist haze. The problem I have with it, though, is that it's boring.

I see plenty of people praising this because it's like the classic Zelda. Except the original Zelda had a ton of different items. It had money that you could use to buy new equipment and supplies. It had a robust roster of enemies. It had catchy music. It had fast-paced, challenging game play that was augmented by its items and equipment. Anodyne has none of that. Was the original Zelda directionless? Yes. Was it horribly vague at times, especially when it came to finding walls to bomb? Yes. But there were so many resources back in the day to help you out: Nintendo Power, unofficial strategy guides, tip lines: it was vague but you could still beat it. And people tend to forget the reason so many of those games from that era were so vague was due to the hardware limitations.

Anodyne, after two hours of playing, left me feeling like I was still waiting for a game to begin. Screen after screen with nothing in it. Maze-like paths that led to the same place. Bland environments. Enemies and puzzles that offered no challenge. And man are the tonal shifts bad. Sometimes I could tell it wanted to be like Earthbound with its bizarre humor. Then I travel through a whirlpool formed by a man I killed into a bloodsoaked nightmare realm and perform...an abortion? It was all over the place and it didnt create an engaging experience.

If you want a Zelda-style action game, go play Hyper Light Drifter. Go play 3D Dot Game Heroes. If you want an Earthbound or Undertale clone, find something other than Anodyne. Its dreary and boring in an attempt to come off as deep. But its just boring.

So I played this for about 4 hours straight before I decided to throw in the towel. Why?

Well, Valdis Story starts pretty well. It's a fast-paced action game that wants to emulate the Metroidvania formula. So I fight monsters in fluid combat, explore some places, meet some cool looking characters and then...go on a fetch quest. And then another. And then another. And then I'm told to find missing crew mates.

And that's the game, which isnt a Metroidvania. I'm two areas from beating the game and I felt myself losing more and more interest as I wandered around trying to figure out where to go. I found myself dodging enemies more than fighting them because the combat was growing tiresome. The unexpected boss battles were getting harder and harder despite my level grinding and my need to collect every chest of loot I could find.

And then I realized: VS doesn't really go anywhere. Timed platform challenges don't pay off. Im near the end of the game and I barely have any upgraded items or skills. "Well, go explore more!" No. It's not worth it. The story meanders around and word vomits on you so it's not like I cared at about it. And for as fast as the combat is, it didnt evolve. The magic system just felt second fiddle to the melee so boss fights turned into hack and slash grinds.

Maybe Ill come back and finish this. But I was getting more and more bored as I was playing. I could play Axiom Verge. Dust: AET. Mormodora. Chronicles of Teddy. Anything other than this.

This was a blast. I'm generally not great at Arkanoid-style games, but I had a great time with this.

If you're not familiar with the style of game play, you bounce a ball to break blocks and beat enemies. That's it. You get a ton of items and skills to help you out so it doesn't become repetitive.

The graphics are colorful, the music is great, and the story was silly and cute. No complaints.

And I want to say how happy I am with DYA Games for not doing what they did with Super Star Path and not putting any profanity in this. I have to admit I walk into all of their games with my breath held, not sure if I'm going to hear something horribly out of place, but I'm happy they kept this rated E.

Keep up the good work, ya'll.

I recommend this only if youre a fan of Judge Dredd; otherwise, its a budget FPS that clocks in around four hours long. It isnt terrible, but there's not much variety in the terms of game play and the overall presentation is low. But, if youre a fan of Dredd and the Dark Judges as I am, youll get a kick liberating Mega City One from the alien super fiend.

It doesn't matter how short this game is or much it wants to adhere to the Metroidvania style, it isn't fun.

The graphics in the cutscenes are detailed and vibrant; the graphics in-game are minimalist and bland.

There is hardly any music. The music you do here is minimalist and dull.

The core game play - the combat and platforming - isn't good. Your primary attack has no range, leaves you vulnerable when you use it, and enemies are far too plentiful. For as short as this game is, you will die. Many many times. It just isn't fun. What does this challenge give me? Interesting characters and plot development? No. Detailed and varied environments to explore? No. Nothing. The "less is more" approach fails with this because this game has nothing in it. And I grew up playing 8 bit platformers. This isn't Rad Gravity or Vice or Shadow of the Ninja or Blaster Master. It's a waste of a dollar.

Go play Blaster Master Zero. Go play Momodora. Go play The Vagrant. Don't waste your money on this.

This game is awesome.

The story is super simple: robots on a ship have gone bad so it's time to blow 'em up.

The graphics look great, the music is bumpin', and the game play is so smooth. With multiple characters each with unique weapons and play strategies AAC caters to all play styles.

The difficulty ramps nicely, the stages have unique gimmicks and layouts, and the bosses are the right kind of challenging. The final zone was definitely tough and multiple stages took a few tries before I got through them, but overall AAC is a well-balanced arcade style twin stick shooter.

I had a blast with this. Buy it.

I love twin stick shooters and I love roguelikes. I don't love Blazing Beaks, but I do like it.

It has nice graphics, cool music, and a pretty cute aesthetic. The issue? It's really really hard. You'll play the first two areas over and over and over hoping that RNG gives you decent item drops. None of the weapons you get feel just right as rate of fire is rather slow. Combine this with dying in one or two shots and you'll learn very quickly why this game is so hard. And its weird, too, because stages are fairly small without too many enemies. Its just that you need to execute perfect runs in order to progress.

Despite this I managed to get to the end. I died and decided to do something I rarely do: I put the difficulty down to Easy. I grinded for an hour straight on Normal. I played with every character available plus a few I unlocked. I tried different item compositions and really got a taste and feel of the game. But I put it on Easy and managed to beat the final boss. It was worth it. Play on Normal if you want to appreciate the difficulty, which it has in spades, but drop it down to Easy if you want to see the ending credits.

Blazing Beaks isnt the best roguelike shooter youll play, but it has its charm.

Every single fiber of my being wants to say that I love this and that you should buy it. It's like a mix between Ninja Gaiden and Vice: Project Doom on the NES. Tight game play, good music, and a solid understanding of what made classic 8-bit games fun.

And then the final level came around and killed everything.

I can't beat it. I threw in the towel after an hour. Why? Nine consecutive screens with only three lives. This should be doable except the worst flaws of this game shine through here. 1. You can only use the analog stick on your game pad and not the D-pad. That sucks for a 2-D platformer. Combine this with rampant input eating. Thought you were going to jump? Nope. Thought you were going to hitch to that wall? Nope. The platforming at the end became impossible for me because of the input eating due to using the analog stick. It sucks and it ruined an otherwise awesome game for me. I love the other games Sinclair Strange as put out, but man, I really hope this is patched to using D-Pad controls.

I really wanted to love this. I thought the Wii game was super unique, and while not perfect, had enough positive points to merit a playthrough. This, however, has a huge flaw for me: mandatory stars. I had a good time blitzing through stages, holding dash, and solving puzzles as quickly as possible. But then I saw that you had to earn X amount of stars to gain entry to the next area. Nope. That did it in for me. I know you can turn the Princess off and just take your time with the puzzles, but that takes a fair share of the soul out of the game.

Maybe other people will see past that, but for me the mandatory stars reminded me of the mandatory collect-a-thon that ruined Diddy Kong Racing for me.

Dude, I...I mean...

This is equal parts experimental horror and 3rd grade dookie jokes.

Do you like bizarre, non sequitur horror? Do you still laugh at poopoo jokes and booty noises? If yes to both, then this is for you.
