While not the best title put out by Wayforward, Bloodrayne Betrayal is still a pretty solid action platformer.

Hailing from the same series that debuted back in the early 2000's on consoles, Bloodrayne follows the adventures of Rayne, a dhampir employed by the enigmatic Brimstone Society to rid the world of evil supernatural threats. While sharing the same names and principles, Betrayal has no bearing on the other two games in the series.

And I'll admit, I do actually like the first Bloodrayne game. Campy, but it never took itself seriously. The sequel was butts, though. And then Rayne had the honor of posing in Playboy's Girls of Gaming spread.

Well.

Luckily here, Rayne isn't subjected to such crass treatment. While being a lady with respective lady bits, Rayne's sexuality is never a selling point in this game, and I appreciate that. The gameplay at hand features tricky platforming replete with lasers, acid pools, spiked ceilings/walls, and all other sorts of dangerous hazards. Enemies feature other vampires, ghouls, and all sorts of foul abominations. Combat is fast and fluid, offering combos, aerials, some ranged weaponry, and the ability to harvest health from enemies or infect them to then strategically detonate them. While combat and platforming works well for the most part, Bloodrayne suffers from being kinda stiff. Rayne has trouble with finer movements and with keeping her footing; many attacks knock you down and there are times when you get stun locked to death.

But despite its brevity and its few moments of less than stellar controls, BloodRayne Betrayal gives satisfying action. It isn't terribly long, but its focused and to the point.

I wanted very, very badly to like Demon's Crystals. It's a fast-paced twin-stick with anime babes. Graphics are bright and colorful, too, so that's good, right?

Well, that's about all it has.

The gameplay, while fast, doesn't have much life to it. Your primary attack sucks, the power-ups never feel like they do enough damage, gaining levels does nothing noticable to the gameplay, and the sheer amount of crap on screen ensures that you will die many a cheap death. The music, while not awful, becomes increasingly obnoxious as the game goes on.

If you play the first level of this game, cool. Pat yourself on the back and walk away because you've played the entire game. I put about 2 hours into this and it all felt exactly the same. Exactly. The. Same.

You could argue that for about a dollar you're getting your money's worth. But look at it this way: why waste money on a sub-par budget title when you could save up and play something of value? Demon's Crystals is not the worst game I've ever played, but it certainly is not one of the better. Save up your dollars and get Assault Android Cactus instead.

"Prepare for an epic 10 hour adventure..."

Yeah, no. I beat this in 3, one sitting, because I had the day off.

Was it worth my time? Yes and no.

SoS is a super, SUPER simple RPG. Everything from the story to the gameplay to the presentation. Nothing will make you go, "Oh, wow." But, I have a soft spot for classic 16-bit RPGs and Warfare Studios played me like a fiddle because here I am 3 hours later having finished it.

If you like OG RPGs and you find this on sale, pick it up knowing this is nothing special in the least. If you're not a fan and you're looking for something deep and compelling, pass on this.

Ever wanted to play a game that mixed excessive violence with wackadoo 90's humor? If so, well, then this is the game for you.

Harvester tells the story of Steve, a young man who wakes up in a surreal 1950's town with no memory of who he is or where he is. Such mystery! As Steve is guided through the town of Harvest, he slowly uncovers the dark and dastardly forces at work and how he's involved with all of it...

In case the trailer didn't clue you in, and if you've never heard of this game before, Harvester is notorious for its violent content. But straight up, this game is no where near as shocking as it was when it came out in the 90's. The special effects in the cutscenes range from passable 80's practial effects to Microsoft paint doodles. And the violence is the focal selling point of Harvest because it really doesn't have much else going for it.

Ever play a point and click before? Then you've played this. If not, you point, you click, things happen. The problem with this - and especially with Harvester - is that oftentimes the things you need to interact with are so miniscule, so tiny on the screen, that it becomes almost impossible to know what to do next. It doesn't help that because 90% of the visuals in Harvester are super grainy and pixelated; trying to find key items or objects to interact with in the environments becomes extremely difficult. But as you manage to find things and use them you'll learn that 75% of Harvester is just that: clicking on stuff. There aren't any real puzzles, the little combat it has is stiff and unfair, and most of the game takes place in the same few screens.

So why am I recommending it? Because if you play it with a guide (which I did), you can strap yourself in for a wacky ride. The content is graphic, but stupid and over the top. It's a satire/commentary on the rise of graphic violence in pop culture that dominated the 90's. If something could go from 0-10 in a second, Harvester takes it to 11. The actual story itself kept my interest enough to see where it would go and the ending was stupidly satisfying. I can't reiterate this enough: play this with a guide. No shame. It's not that long, it's dated, but it offers goofy thrills if you're willing to give it some leeway.

Who is the mysterious suited man? Why is he navigating this murderous landscape of ever-encroaching vines and spinning machinery?

Does it matter? Simply guide him off screen and keep him free of danger.

The controls are tight, the music is slick, and the premise is incredibly simple but effective.

An incredibly difficult game to classify, but one worth checking out nonetheless.

The granddaddy of the FPS.

And boy is it even more satisfying to play now than it ever was.

I'm going to be absolutely serious straight outta the gate with this:

I do not find Amnesia to be scary in the least. Not in its presentation, not in its story, not in its gameplay. It did not scare me at all.

I make this disclaimer because Amnesia has garnered an absurd amount of recognition and notoriety as being one of the finest survival horror games within recent years. And in some ways I can see what it attemps to do: create a harrowing, anxiety fueled experience with gameplay set very far aside from modern action game tropes.

Fair enough.

But Amnesia fails to deliver any real spookiness. The story of the game is as the title suggests: our hero has no memory of where he is or what is even happening. Through the course of the game as you explore the dark, mysterious castle the game takes place in, you'll find hints and clues as to what is going on. I can say that the delivery of the story does have style and so I'll give credit where credit is due. It's not Hellraiser, but it gets the job done.

Gameplay is simple: you walk, sometimes run, through dark corridors and rooms finding the odd item or two to help you solve rudimentary puzzles which in turn open up new portions of the castle. Rinse and repeat. Occasionally a spooky entity is chasing you, intent on putting an end to your adventure. This is where the game falters for me: the number one enemy in the game is a shadow. Or shadows, rather. Yup, the dark corners of rooms and the places where your lantern doesn't reach. That's it. If you spend too much time in the shadows you get anxious and for some reason begin to take damage. Yeah, I don't get it either. When there is an actual enemy, like a shambling mummy creature, it just chases you. If it catches you - and it probably will at some point - don't be scared: you'll just respawn at the door of the room you died in. Even the famous Monster in the Water room that people made videos of did nothing for me: I just carried a box around with me and for some reason the thing never spawned. Terrifying.

See, there is no great sense of danger for getting smacked around in Amnesia. Aside from maybe losing five minutes of progress, I never felt worried about getting hurt in the game. Because what the game boils down to is just running past the enemies, quickly exploring the rooms until you find what you need, and then running out. The end.

The worst part of the game for me was the words of explanation at the beginning, stating that Amnesia was not a game to be "won" but rather experienced. To begin with, technically, yes, you do in fact succeed in the game so, yes, you can win. And secondly, it's a bit of a shame that people overall would even need that to be explained to them.

I understand the point of a game like Amnesia, and Penumbra as well, is that you're supposed to immerse yourself in the game and give yourself over to the helplessness the character feels as he runs from the madness inducing shadows and the horrors lurking inside them. I get that. But it just isn't scary. If anything, I became bored as I wandered around searching for quest items.

And yet, despite all of my misgivings for the title, I can recommend Amnesia because it is worth a try if you like horror games. It certainly isn't the worst I've ever played. I suppose it's just the hype that surrounds it that makes me frown.

You could do worse, but you can also do better.

Exactly like its sister series, Ubermosh, Swarm Riders is a volatile, frenetic, blast of a time.

Flee from a swarm of voracious insects, all while blasting away as many as you can. How long can you last? Not long.

But don't worry: the game restarts at instant speed so you can try over and over and over again.

This was a pleasant journey. It was a simple one, oftentimes vague, but ultimately enjoyable.

What is Finding Teddy? Well, the name says it all: a little girl must find her kidnapped teddy bear as she explores a surreal and haunting world found within her wardrobe.

FT plays like any traditional point and click adventure: you point at things, you click them, hopefully something happens. You find items, use items, open new pathways, rinse and repeat. To break up the monotony of such gameplay, FT incorporates a music system to act as the primary source of puzzle solving. This also becomes the games largest issue because the answers to the puzzles are not always apparent and thus can lead to aimless backtracking in attempts to find an overlooked clue.

FT falls into the classic pitfalls of the genre: very short and it can become a click-fest, trying to find the right thing to interact with. But it is short. As in less than an hour short. And in that time, if you're patient, you'll find a strange, but charming experience helping our young hero find her friend.

If you're looking for something action packed, look elsewhere.

It's like this game was made just for me.

Top down shooter? Anime babes? Naughty bits? All in one game? Hey now...

If those things interest you, this is for you, too.
