Unfortunately this game made me motion sick very quickly so I was unable to spend any time in it. I felt like I was a camera flying through the air at head height rather than a person walking. I didn't feel connected to the footstep sounds at all. And for some reason the character jumps in slow motion as if in low gravity? It felt very weird sorry.

Absolutely loved Eastshade! I'm still sad that I finished it and I'm writing this a few weeks later.

There is a wonderful attention to detail and story or lore. It often surprised me how interconnected everything is; characters casually mentioning other characters whom you've met on the other side of the island; discovering there is significance in things that you've been walking past for half the game, etc. And every character and quest has warmth and humour in it. These characters were absolutely written to be interesting people that will make you feel emotions and not just to hand you a quest. It reminded me of Fable in that way and was a highlight of the game for me.

There is no combat so you can explore without fear, enjoy every sunrise and sunset and stumble upon all sorts of interesting things. ...That is, you can after you've acquired a coat or other materials to keep you warm at night. This is not a survival game so this 'you can't go out at night because it's too cold' mechanic felt out of place to me. Fortunately you can negate it quite early on.

I loved the painting mechanic despite having to have the graphics settings on low for my potato PC. It's still beautiful! Some characters will ask you to paint a picture - of a bridge, of a sparkly cave, of a particular view at a certain time of day - and the challenge is when you have to go and find what they are talking about in order to paint it.

There isn't really a plot besides the notion that you are exploring the island because it was your mother's favourite place, so there's no sense of urgency. There are a few quest lines where characters are in opposition and you can choose sides, but choosing does not affect much.

I really wanted to enjoy Rime... It's a beautiful surreal world to be dropped into and at the beginning I wanted to explore every corner of it, especially when I discovered there are collectibles to find! But they gave the boy an ungainly movement style that made exploring feel sluggish and annoying to me. Every time you run and stop the boy wobbles and almost falls over, as though he is an uncoordinated toddler rather than... maybe eight, ten years old? When you jump down off anything he takes his time picking himself up. It's just too slow and constantly interrupts your gameplay. I didn't find most of the collectibles because it was too annoying to go looking for them.

The puzzles were not very hard or very varied. I got 'stumped' for a few minutes at two or three of them. I'm not a hardcore puzzle gamer.

I had to look up what the story was about after I finished the game, though I got an inkling of it in the last chapter. It still doesn't quite make sense to me. There's a few things that I'm not sure what they are supposed to represent or be symbolic of. I think it was a nice premise that maybe could have been done better. It would have helped to have more clues about what was going on earlier in the game.

Also I thought the fox would be more useful (like you could have had to duo puzzles with him in some way?) but he just runs ahead to show you the way to the next puzzle and yaps at you when you're going the wrong way. I wanted a fox mute button by the end. :(
