I would recommend looking at the Rune Factory games. They have some grinding to advance the story, but nothing too outrageous is required to beat the games.
I love RF4 for the sheer (insane) amount of character events and little side-stories. It is a really stellar game that is also on steam, which probably helps a lot: https://steamproxy.com/steamstore/app/1580240/Rune_Factory_4_Special/
