For those unaware, the word “clannad” means “family” in old Irish (or that is at least what the author intended for its meaning to be); and it deserves the name. This visual novel has been one of the most uplifting and eye opening pieces of literature I have ever read, and I’m sure it will do the same for you if you give it the chance.

As someone who has gone through the death of a parent at a young age and who has struggled significantly with family issues along with battling depression, I can confidently say that this work has helped me have a better idea of what true love and connection between people actually looks like and how we have the ability to choose our true family despite what blood relations may lead us to believe. While this is certainly one of the most funny, cute and beautiful things that I have ever played/read, it is by far the most genuine. I’m absolutely positive that no matter who you are, you will find some character in this that you will greatly relate to which is great considering the fact that so many of them are fleshed out exceptionally well. Different people have their own issues that we cannot properly understand and Clannad depicts this fact especially well and acknowledges both the bleak aspects of this as well as the hopeful and optimistic ones. It does not hold back on bringing out emotions, whether that be through the beauty of its visuals, the bliss of its music or the captivating nature of its writing. It is a true immersive experience that equally allows you to be taken away from reality and be immersed into its world yet allows you to reflect on reality and come back to it with a better point of view. Sometimes we go to things such as games in order to escape the change going on around us and to be comforted, which isn't a bad thing at all; but Clannad helps you to come to terms with whatever change may be going on around you and gives you reality check in a sense in order for you to look at the bigger picture while simultaneously helping you appreciate the smaller moments.

If you even slightly consider yourself to be someone who seeks out emotional, heartfelt or romantic stories, then this is the most essential story I can recommend.
Take your time with it, don’t rush it, just enjoy it.
