When you play Phasmophobia, you are given a name, as well as clues to discover the type of ghost you are hunting. Once you discover the ghost type, you can use its name as well as its ghost type to generate a reaction out of it, make it angry, and get more money out of it. There was a concept that we never realized, that maybe calling out a dead person’s name, as well as the name of a malevolent entity could have dire consequences. They just might actually be listening; they might actually be hunting.

When you are sitting in the game with your headphones on, calling out to an unknown entity by name... you are not just calling out in game, you are also calling out in the real world. Recently, some of our team have felt like they are being watched, followed, and unsafe in their own homes. A picture knocked off the wall, doors open that were closed before, cupboards open in the kitchen. Initially, it was just enough to cause concern, make them lose a little sleep, keep them on edge. Their work started to falter, they were showing up late for shifts, and above all they were absolutely TERRIFIED to play Phasmophobia, a game they invented. On Monday morning, one of our gameplay testers, I will just be using his initials, KW, failed to show up altogether. He had never missed a day, not for any reason whatsoever. We decided to go to his apartment to check up on him. When we arrived the door was open, and KW's neck had been snapped. There didn't look to be any sort of struggle or forced entry. The police chalked it up to a fall, just a sad accident.

While we were cleaning out KW's apartment, we noticed certain irregularities. For one, KW purchased a Ouija board the same day he died. He also purchased a walkie talkie, an electronic thermometer, and a UV flashlight. All items we use in Phasmophobia for the user to track the ghost. KW had spent 30 hours playing Phasmophobia. 30 hours calling out to ghosts, entities. 30 hours calling out to evil.

Today, I finished my shift, and signed off at exactly 30 hours. Maybe KW did just fall, maybe there really is nothing suspicious about his death. But my apartment feels cold... and I think I left my bathroom door closed? I definitely turned off my kitchen sink before I left... Or did I? I think there must be an issue with my electricity, my lights keep flickering. Maybe I am just paranoid, or maybe something heard me repeatedly calling it out. Maybe our lore was too accurate, our information was too good, and we are actually calling out to the spirits beyond the grave.

I will be sleeping with my crucifix tonight. Based on our game... It will not be enough. If this post does not get updated, my worst fears were realized. The entities we have been calling out to have heard us, they have heard us taunting them, calling to them, and they are coming for us.

Here. Adult. Pain. Kill. Close. Behind. Attack.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to play DOTA 2 at a high MMR. The tactics are extremely intricate, and without a solid grasp of theoretical crafting and metagame knowledge most of the strategies will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also DOTA 2 lore deepness, which is deftly woven into his character-mechanics - their skill and item builds draws heavily from classic RTS mechanics, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the way proplayers play it, to realize that they're not just complex- they say something deep about a GAMER'S LIFE. As a consequence people who only play DOTA 2 at a lower MMR ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the Shopkeeper's existential catchphrase "What does a hero truly needs?" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Valve's genius unfolds itself on their pc screens. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a DOTA 2 tattoo! And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only - And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 MMR points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
