My last review of this game was just a few sentences, implying that the game was a tear-jerker. After mulling on it for a few days and going out of my way to get a good grasp on the story and its lore, I’ve been eager to write a proper review instead.

The Good

The game’s story, sound design, music, and visuals are all fantastic. It may take time for the player to get totally invested, but once they are, they’re treated to a truly emotional and impactful story. As stated by many others before, for a game that’s main premise is around songs and an ancient resource that can only be found by listening for it, it knocks the sound aspect out of the park. This, accompanied by the ethereal visual design, makes the game beautiful to see and hear.
Characters also leave quite the impression, even the ones that have been given smaller roles. You’ll more than likely be attached to the main cast, namely the crew of the Red Chamber, but there’s a good chance you’ll be charmed by some other characters.

The game also has a good amount of extra lore that you’re going to uncover as you progress. It does a very good job at enhancing the experience and there are many parallels you can draw from the main storyline and allows for extra interpretations from the middle to the very end.

There’s far more I’d like to rave about for the story itself, but I’d prefer to keep spoilers at a minimum.

The Bad

The game is a visual novel first and a game second. Throughout my own playthrough, I really started to notice just how handhold-y the actual gameplay was. The space sections reminded me of FTL, and while I wasn’t expecting to be brutally punished for not managing resources, I also wasn’t expecting it to essentially be an afterthought. Unless you’ve done something fundamentally wrong, you’ll never have a shortage of resources. The game also has RNG elements, but to its credit, it doesn’t actively hamper the experience. Just means that you’ll likely have to play a second time if you’re willing to 100% the game.

The puzzles also require very little thought. The dev’s idea was that sound would be the major way to solve puzzles. Well, for Jun, most puzzles are as simple as lining up the equalizer with the inscriptions on gates. Using sound to solve puzzles is far more apparent for Eda, but there’s very little depth that goes into solving those.

The game would potentially fare better if it was an animated series rather than a game.

Overall

The game has an unbelievably compelling story, but the story is what ultimately makes the game worth playing. While mechanically disappointing, it at least has the decency to not hinder the experience and frustrate the player. Visuals, sound, and music are simply unforgettable. It will take time to get fully invested in the game, but it’s worth it. Oh, and bring a box of tissues, you’re going to need it.

Game's fine, but way too short.

Right in the leagues of Radiant Silvergun and R-Type.

You won't regret it, I promise.

Pros
- Great graphics.
- Fun classes. (Not anymore with recent nerfs.)
- Decent(ish) story.
- Great loot.

Cons
- Cookie-cutter enemies, literally the only difference is skins based on whatever faction you're fighting.
- Clunky controls.
- Linear levels.
- Incredibly lame boss fights, hope you like dying instantly.
- Lots of bugs.
- Frequent disconnects.
- Uninspired missions.

Overall

Not worth 60$ at all. 30 maybe, but not 60. If you want a looter shooter, look elsewhere.

Pros
- Portal mechanic is pretty neat, makes plays possible that you wouldn't imagine in other games.
- F2P friendly (in the sense of paid items being cosmetic).
- Maps are well designed.

Cons
- Guns feel weak, for a game intended to be fast paced, this slows things down considerably.
- Movement feels clunky, even through portals.
- Long matchmaking.
- The announcer's voice, dear god the announcer's voice.
- Lootboxes (personal gripe of mine).

Overall
This game needs some work if it wants to compete with other FPS games out there, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was fun. Some see it as being Halo meets Portal, but it's more like Portal meets a slow Quake. It's worth a try at the very least, but don't have your expectations too high.
