I was in secondary school when this first came out. I've since finished college, moved out and had several other significant life events. In that time, this game is still a poorly optimised, unstable mess with a serious misunderstanding of what the playerbase wants.

Can't in good conscience recommend it. Play Project Zomboid instead.

An embarrassment to the Aliens franchise and to Gearbox itself.
This has sat in my backlog for eight years since being gifted it. In those eight years, its wasted potential often popped back into the forefront of my mind. This year, I decided to replay both this and AVP 2010.

Even at £3 with the infamous .ini file typo fix and any complementary mod packs, this game is beyond saving. You get Call of Duty: Xenomorph Edition, with more jagged edges than New Vegas' ugliest rock, 30FPS locked cutscenes with graphics that would make the Dreamcast blush even on Ultra 1440p, and performance that still manages to dip in quiet interiors.

The gunplay feels shoddy, the human enemies are hitscan morons who will stand in your inaccurate line of fire, and the campaign ends with a whimper. Pacing is all over the place and the music is repetitive, and not enough of H.R. Giger's design motifs are utilised. Xenos become nuisance fodder with little place in the gameplay for experimentation.

This game boasts more glitches than a Day 1 Bethesda launch, even 10 years since release. It's little wonder Alien had to full on reboot into Horror with Isolation after this tripe.

The one saving grace of this game is the characters: Winter is a decent protagonist, ONeil is very likable and their banter back and forth is great, and Bella is a sympathetic and tragic character. The rest, not so great. In a game about the XENOMORPHS though, the 1 compliment I give should not be about Gearbox's original human characters.

Save your money and time and buy AVP 1999 or AVP 2010 instead. Both still hold up brilliantly.

Randy Pitchford, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Loved this back in the day, enjoy it even more in my mid 20s. It's aged well, feels like a DOOM 3 clone in the best of ways, and every weapon feels impactful and responsive. Colonial Marines sucked, but Rebellion hit it out of the park with AVP 2010.

The Marine campaign offers a DOOM 3 tier space shooter where it attempts to be scary, but you end up having way too much fun blowing Aliens and Predators away. The Alien campaign is more of a stealth game and it does it pretty well. The weakest is the Predator campaign, that while still good, falls flat whenever you're in combat with the Xenos: the game is infinitely more fun to be the Predator against clumsy, stupid Marines who fall for your traps. Against the Xenos, the combat becomes more melee focused which is good one-to-one, but against swarms of them especially on the higher difficulties becomes a pain.

Overall a 9/10 game that has options, compatibility and visuals that are still ahead of its time 13 years later.
