You walk around a dark cave at a speed so slow that you will check your keyboard settings thinking there has been some sort of mistake, but it is no mistake, and for that reason, you might want to keep a book nearby or something fun to do to balance out this lethargic crawl. The core game mechanic of 'The Longing' is waiting. You must distract yourself for 400 days while the King takes a power nap and you are left to draw on cave walls with chalk. The gameplay is slow by design to accentuate the games hopeless narrative. The tedious pace allows the player to fully appreciate the hand drawn art style, which is the games most definitive strength. Arguably, the game could get by just as a visual piece with exploration. The story is cryptic and somber, and entertains some dark endings for our little shade friend. The player is not given much context/backstory and thus the story tells itself through subtle lore found throughout the caves, which makes discovering every little thing that much more interesting. As for gameplay, the interaction is limited, even for a point-and-click style game. Unfortunately, the slow movement and limited activity debilitates initial interest in the game over time. Overall, 'The Longing' is an impressive visual feat from a small indie team but lacks the engagement and polish to be a true masterpiece among video game artistic greats, and maybe that is why I am so hard on it. 'The Longing' could have been so much more, but ultimately falls short in giving the player an interactive and engaging experience. 7.5/10
