dont let the play hours fool you, i usually play offline so steam hasnt logged the 100+ hours ive played at time of writing.
also of note is that ive never broken past the mid game of elone or elin.

for elona players:
it is best to think of elin as a streamlined remake of elona more heavily focused on a narrative and the idea of founding a new town on your own strength. it is to elona as elder scrolls oblivion is to morrowind.
dont let that chase the free roam elona fans away you can fairly easily become a roaming bandit or use your empty field base as a storage hub while you just go around and mind your own business.
its also less roguelike letting you choose to save/load as you would in an elder scrolls game using its oath system.
information of note:
-i keep going back to elderscrolls because the game feels like morrowind and dont starve smashed together.

-ranged weapons have ammo now though some thrown weapons return to your hand

-cursed gear hurts less but still enough to be avoided

-saving good gear you replace to downgrade into raw and eat for the stats isnt nearly as viable or common now

-luck is more effective than in elona but doesnt help much with gambling at the moment.

-stamina is everything.

for non elona players:
elin is a very randomized romp through 90s anime degeneracy and gurps/pathfinder/D&D style mechanics.
almost EVERYTHING! is randomly generated so you will encounter things like a dog hatching from an egg and it being 127 years old, able to speak, and a professional blacksmith from birth, this game takes place in a deranged cosmic mess setting where age is just a made up number and death and rebirth are basically the same thing. beings that follow natural laws and causality are in themselves a rare oddity.
information of note:
-the game also has a pretty robust "pet" system where you get companions that follow you on your journey based on charisma and you can build around this or take the loner feats and be a 1 man army.

-expect your build to be a blobby mess in the early game and form into the build you wanted as you go on.

-the game is in early access with constant updates so a lot of things will be weird like a stonemasons table letting you make stone gear but a blacksmith table not letting you make metal gear because its just not been implemented yet

-the witch class isnt completed yet because its focused on alchemy which isnt finished yet. this doesnt mean it unplayable though as its a solid magic/throwing weapon build start. any effect a potion will have when drunk will also work when thrown at someone making those cursed healing potions that kill you a fantastic throwing weapon

-what you eat is VERY important as its the biggest source your stat growth. the way stats/skills work is they have potential [marked as "potency" in food stats] and level the more potential you have the faster the stat grows from doing things the stat uses so if you want charisma you need to either go to a trainer and pay platinum coins you get from quests for potential then go play music, cast psionic magic, invest in stores ect. to make the stat go up [morrowind/oblivion players will pick this up quickly] food can also give stats and potential

-the game is pretty easy if you know what you are doing and is great for people who love "number go up"

-it has an active mod community
-its fun even without those mods
-its developed with a gameplay first mentality though a little too balance skewed for multiplayer

-needs a few quality of life tweaks but this team has a history of coming through on such things so im not worried as well as some of those things being ones you can fix in the in game world generation options

i may update this with a few more downsides in time but for the first 8 hours ive had fun right out the gate

deep rock galactic, check it out if you havent already.

i am a long time souls player from prepare to die edition onward as well as a long time PVP player
the online community for this game is so utterly toxic and uniformly terrible that i was finally able to break out of my stubborn self harm addiction and uninstall it out of disgust

now on to the game itself
this is the most obtuse title in what it calls "difficulty" with a movement engine so utterly alien to the movements of the non player entities that i would categorize the feel of controlling your character in this game as "surgeon simulator like" meaning you can get good at it but it is such an esoteric mess that is 30% prayer to the input reactivity gods its not worth it
its everything that poisoned the otherwise good DS2 in SotFS and dark souls 3 kicked up a notch and stuck together with a cheap scotch tape solution in the form of a jump button that is in no way reliable
DO NOT look at my play hours and think i enjoyed this game. that number is an addiction to spite.
-i convince myself ill have fun if i try hard enough
-i start the game
-the game cheats me of any sens of enjoyment at any turn
-i cannot over power my urge to let it go and stop playing
-i finally shut it down when i am completely emotionally drained and just too tired to keep bashing my head against it
-repeat 2-8 days later

much like any other addiction i am going to find myself staring at that "install" button in about a week begging myself to remember all of the suffering it caused me and not press it

it has been a mediocre souls game experience and a horrible gaming experience and i wish i could tax every piece of trash excuse for a person that contributed to it being so a finger so that they must live their lives with just that little bit more pain and annoyance.

the dev decided AI was the way to go contributing to the still unchecked art theft and strangulation of the careers of small time voice actors
id wait to see if this changes but i just want to cut this soon to be shovelware out of my life and move on now so i dont have to watch the lemmings all flock to the new update like nothing's wrong

is it perfect?: hell no

does the magic system need some expanding?: yes

does the game run out of content really fast?:yes

do i want burden beasts and carriages?: yes

do i want basic attacks with offhand weapons not to eat a skill slot?: yes

do i want a frozen northland area?: would be nice

do i want mounts and carriages so that the walking simulator aspect dies out in the mid to late game?:hell yes

do i want an expanded economy system with many things to do with money and ways to make money?: yes

do we have any of these above things?: no

is this a good RPG with a nice big map and a wonderful balance of survival/adventuring mechanics?: yes

is it so buggy and broken and full of predatory business tactics that your money is better off in a trash can than spent on this?: no

is it fun to play alone?:yes but take things slow, impatience kills fast in this game

is it fun to play with friends?: yes

can you play with more than 1 friend?: if you install the 4 player co-op mod you can

is there more content promised for the future?: from what i hear yes but these developers are taking it slow and i hope that means they will be putting quality and stability high on their priority list.

and i love it...

as far as i can tell the entire point of this game is over the top style points, just focus on making the biggest spectical you possibly can and this game will reward you for it.
there are some sneaky quick time events that just instakill you in cut scenes so be ready for those but the ones you encounter in gameplay are usually spin the stick or button mash and occure in a consistent fashion
that being so means that his game is hard on hands and controller lifespans (i do recommend controller)
treat this game as you would DOOM it is a crazy show that is fun to play with a story you don't need to pay attention to but may enjoy it more if you do
(quick tip i learned: close range shotguns + air dodge + rose lollypop + full circle Y attack helps A LOT with bossfights)

this game is a stress and murphy's law simulator that will somehow make you fall in love with it.
it somehow feels casual yet is actually very hardcore with sessions taking 8+ hours of continuous consentration it will relax you and stress you to the point of insanity and you will like it.

this game is fun with friends and almost impossible alone.
get it if your friends are there to play it with you wait for a sale if not.
the graphics and sound are fantastic and satisfying to a fault as you will get so caught up in the beauty of it that you will not notice the suicide bomber breaking your line running into your sniper position and blowing you and your team to the hell that didnt escape to earth.

TLDR: the new management decided to infect the core of the game with rot and now it's dying.

for the uninformed:
there was more than sexual content censorship, there was also erasing a black man's struggle with racism from his backstory in addition to the already disgusting behavior of marring an artist's work after it's creation and popularization spitting in the face of that artist and the art community as a whole
if you want this game pirate a pre patch version and look into the soon to be growing community servers.

expecting a shallow all graphic no substance 2D fighter? PREPARE TO BE SURPRISED!
the gameplay is deep and demanding of skill from the player, the story is memorable and emotional, the characters are unique to one another and fleshed out just enough to hold interest but not so much you wish you didnt have to hear about them anymore.
the online community is. . . ruthless but fair, dont go online until youve frame perfect mastered this game or youre just going to lose forever and it will be your own fault assuming the connection holds correctly but this game's connection is better than most so it should rarely be an issue.
the dlc is mostly pallet change garbage that i would recommend buying in a sale but some of it is gold in the form of new characters.

the single player is fantastic the story is fun the characters are memorable, a lot of pain blood sweat and tears went into making it and it shows.
the online on the other hand. . . dont play with random people, you will instantly lose all faith in humanity this community is the worst garbage you can find and they are rewarded for it. play with friends or avoid the online also getting money in the online mode is and always will be an uphill battle with your hands tied to rocks because they want to sell you the pay to win cards.
