the game is funny enough to almost forget the mc is an old ptsd-riddled soldier struggling to cope with insecurity, failure, loss, and the crushing weight of knowing the consequences of every action he will and can ever take all at once

its a nostalgic, lovable lego game. great if you wanna play casually, but if you want to 100% the game you're gonna need to be VERY patient because there's a lot of bugs that make it VERY hard. like, "you may need to download an external program to replicate an xbox controller in order to bypass a major sensitivity issue for a challenge" level hard.

K so obviously, the zombies is a must-play. It's pretty different from what other zombies modes from other CoD games have, but overall its still pretty fun with just as many convoluted easter eggs. If anything I bought this game exclusively for zombies.
However, the multiplayer is ridiculous and chaotic, because wall-running and jetbooster-assisted flight makes every game a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and near-impossible to gauge where enemies are at any given point in time. Its a HUGE shift from other CoD multiplayer experiences, and I honestly found it really hard to play it when I literally get headshot by a flying shotgunner or some jet-sliding knifer.
The campaign is really forced, a lot of the assets are ripped straight from the zombies game, and the plot is just too complicated to follow. It tries to merge its storyline with the zombies storyline, but its pretty obvious that most of the work in the game came to fleshing out the zombies plot.
5/10, a fun zombies exp but overpriced w/ all its dlc n its really hard to say i recommend but the zombies is so fun so just wait till it goes on sale or something

Personally, my only previous experience with XCOM was XCOM: Enemy Unknown. A fantastic game, btw. Thus, my review may not be as "educated" as other reviewers.
However, I write this review in the hopes that it'll summarize a casual player's thoughts as well as some of the other criticisms that this game has received, so other potential players know what to get into.
The main negative thing that others have commented about with this game is that it rushes the players too much. I would have to agree. The main threat that the players must worry about is the "Avatar Project", instead of the withdrawal of the globe's support. Unprepared players will be quickly overwhelmed since the project advances rather quickly, compared to the time necessary to actually gain support from the world. Additionally, many missions have a timer that somewhat diminishes the experience, because you cannot take your time as meticulously as XCOM: Enemy Unknown allowed you to. An added stealth aspect to some missions seem to suffer from this mechanic, because you cannot play as carefully.
On the positive side, I do enjoy this game. Enemies have been remodeled and redone, there are new classes, maps, tactics, and more micromanagement. It is definitely a harrowing, difficult game that isn't for those who hate stress. Research is a little more forgiving because upgrades to a unit's armour, weapons, etc. are automatically applied to all troops once built. Choices made are no longer about which country you can sacrifice some Panic levels in; instead, all consequences directly influence you and your anti-alien facilities. To some, this may be rather off-putting because again, these consequences can also give the player a sense of "rushing", but to me I feel that this adds to the difficulty and gives XCOM 2 a sense of immediate danger instead of indirect, distant consequences.
Overall, I recommend this game to people who do not mind stress in their gameplay, an acceptance of failure, and a much more difficult game than XCOM: Enemy Unknown with some familiar mechanics in between.
