Got this game in the start of Jan 2022

In its current state, there is a lot of polish missing, like good voice lines and other audio cues. The AI movement could also be improved substantially, and there are odd interactions like enemies being able to shoot you through walls/doors, but you not being able to return fire in the same way quite often.

That being said, the general feel of the game is good - the locations are well designed, the equipment and gunplay feels good, and managing all the different areas and suspects works well. Definitely a solid start to something that could be a great game, as it's quite enjoyable to get into the mentality of a tactical field operator in these different missions, and good communication is key when playing with a squad.

I hope this game gets the attention and support it deserves, and that the devs continue to work hard to make this game a high-quality title that will garner a large player base.

Just finished this game.

Carrion is certainly enjoyable. Though it fits into a well-established Indie genre of similar games, the fresh take on being a morphing bio-monster makes it interesting by introducing new dynamics to things like movement, attack strategy and puzzle-solving.

The game looks really nice, and everything is readily identifiable - enemies, traps, levers/switches etc are all easy to see on the backdrop, and you know what pretty much everything will do when you look at it. I will say the ONLY instance where I felt this wasn't super clear was trying to tell which troopers had rifles and which ones had flamethrowers, but that's a very minor issue. The environments are varied and artistically interesting, and the monster itself is visually interesting given that it's essentially a demonic version of Meatwad.

The sound is good, the ambiance of the music while you creep around is appropriate, as is the intensity of the combat music. I like that despite being something that would run amok in a horror film, you don't really have a feeling of "invincibility" - enemies are dangerous and will definitely kill you if you don't approach them carefully. The variety of enemies is also good, as are the combat mechanics you need to employ to defeat them. I will say probably my favorite was the first drone swarm, as that was something very different from most of the shooty enemies faced earlier in the game.

While the gameplay loop is very simple, the puzzles get appropriately more complex as the game goes on, without ever becoming overbearing or feeling impossible. I only got stuck for a short while on one or two of them. I particularly liked the fact that the game doesn't allow you to solve all of the puzzles/pass every area as your largest and most powerful form - there are times where you will have to shed some of your biomass in order to access different areas, because the abilities you have change with the size of the creature. This was an excellent design mechanic that forced you to adapt your tactics and thought process, despite having "unlocked" things that would have otherwise made it possible to brute-force your way through certain legs of the game.

I did also enjoy the "story" aspects of the game - you're a mysterious monster, but there are instances where the game allows you to play through some flashback style sequences that involve some very rudimentary puzzles in order to help you gain context to the general story within the game. That being said, I did find the ending a bit lackluster given all of the power buildup across the game. I appreciate the sort of narrative "twist" that the developers were going for, but would have liked something a bit more climactic.

There are a few design aspects that I think could be improved upon. A map would be incredibly helpful to be able to find your way to older areas that you might not have completed due to a lack of abilities. Having to sort of roam around and hope that each tunnel you go through will lead to the area you're trying to get to makes navigating quite laborious. I also feel like the progression path is a bit off - I seemingly completed the entire game before obtaining any of the more defensive upgrades, so I ended up roaming around finding all of them, only to then finish the game unexpectedly, and was left with a very underwhelmed feeling upon completion. Perhaps that is more a fault of my own, but given that some areas with these upgrades are - as far as I could tell - entirely inaccessible without some of the later abilities, it felt more natural to me to keep progressing as far as I could, as I assumed the gameplay loop would naturally encourage me to go back and retrieve every upgrade in due course.

Overall I would rate this game a 7 out of 10 - enjoyable, and worth the purchase, but lacking in a few design aspects that I think would have removed the small amounts of tedium that I ran into, and unfortunately not granting me any particular "wow" factor that would of course be required for anything near a 10. I think at its sale price of $13 that I got it for, it was a good buy. Given that it only took me a few hours to complete across a single day and no apparent replay value, I would not spend the current full price of $20 on such a game, but that is simply a hurdle that Indie Devs must overcome should they wish to compete in a space where for $60 I can get a game like RDR2 that for all intents and purposes I could play for months without experiencing everything the game has to offer.

I got this game on release for PS4 way back when, and when I saw it was coming to PC, I was SUPER hype because being able to play a shooter like this that needs precision is so much better with mouse and keyboard. I can do a lot of things much faster, and aim much easier to hit precise components on the machines.

Initially, I was really irritated because the game did have some bad bugs that caused a lot of crashes. The team did a very good job in addressing those port issues however, and I've not experienced a crash after the big updates. I still experience some strange graphical quirks, but those were part of the PS4 version as well (just odd physics things with hair/clothing etc.)

Overall, I think this is one of the best games I've ever played. The story is strange, but compelling and very cool, and I very much like the way that they tease you with little bits of the history through the audio logs and snapshots. The mixture of rudimentary and advanced technology gives the game a very unique feel. Visually the game is gorgeous - the environments are rich and varied, the lighting is incredible, and the effects for the machines and weather are crisp. The music and other audio is very well done, and the machine sounds are unique.

The combat is visceral and a ton of fun. The RPG elements of upgradeable weapons with unique characteristics allows you to tailor your playstyle a bit, and helps to keep you motivated on exploring and advancing. There are some very powerful and unique machines that you will come across. The movement and combat styles of the various creatures has a solid learning curve, and will challenge you when it comes to the biggest and baddest enemies. The Hunting Trials are also a great feature that offer unique challenges to introduce you to the various pieces of equipment, and encourage you to experiment with different combat tactics.

Probably my least favorite element of the game is the dialogue/interactions. While the story is well done, the characters -in my opinion - do not act very consistent overall, and many of the interactions between characters are blunt and sort of tone-deaf. Arguably there wouldn't be much nuance between very tribal and suspicious people who have a hard life of survival in a very hostile world, but it seems a bit strange given some of the elements of the story, and a lot of the characters give off a very "NPC" feel, which is disappointing given how well the rest of the world and atmosphere is fleshed out.. My only other real complaint with the game is that some areas of the map are well-detailed, but basically inaccessible. It would have been nice if the terrain was a bit easier to navigate in some areas so that you could explore things a bit more.

Overall though, this game is a must-buy in my opinion for anyone who enjoys the action-adventure genre. Especially if you liked the newer Tomb Raider games, the Uncharted series, and if you're a fan of open-world action RPGs, this is 100% worth every penny at full price.

Realm Royale - while not a hyper polished game - is still one of my favorite BR games. Hi Rez put a lot of great mechanics into this game that make it feel better than other BRs and encourage player interaction beyond the blue zone to keep the game well-paced, full of combat and still overall feeling lighthearted and fun. The Forges are one of the best mechanics in the game, providing central points where you can craft equipment and abilities, but at the risk of running into other players doing the same thing, especially since the forge has thick black smoke pouring out when in use to signal to others that someone is there. Every player has a mount in order to get from one area to the next faster, which makes getting caught out by the zone pretty unlikely, and prevents the game from turning into Running Simulator. Lastly the fact that you turn into a chicken when downed and can run and jump around rather than slowly crawling - and after a short time you turn back into a person on your own without needing a teammate to revive you - means that even in a single-player experience, there's few times where you can be completely caught out by a sniper and have your game experience ended in half a second, and your teammates don't need to worry about being exposed while getting you up, so they can instead continue fighting and enjoying the game. All of these factors combine into making Realm Royale a fun and engaging BR experience. At the time of writing, the player base is small, and the devs have placed bots in the game, which don't function particularly well, but they do allow people to find matches and continue the experience. The servers can also be clunky with some pretty bad snapping at times, and the shooting could use some refinement to tighten hitboxes so that cover can be used more effectively. If you took away the server issues and player count was high, I'd give this game an 8 out of 10. As it stands it's really more like a 6.5, but it's also free, so whatever fun you can have for $0 is pretty rad.
