This is probably the best high speed platformer I have played in my life, and I say that as a sonic fan. I have a lot of nostalgia too, this is at the bare minimum on par with the best of 2D sonic with great level design, fantastic physics with you being able to hold your momentum very well which only gets more satisfying as your hours go on, and some strong visual flair to the concepts of the levels, though in some cases could use stronger execution, It is hard to describe but it is still more than good enough. While this game does have some shortcomings to sonic, or at least SOME of sonic, next to none of them are mechanical and the one that is is exactly like sonics and is not a huge issue.

Just about every shortcoming of 3d sonic has been addressed, all the problems with their game design philosophy clashing with the direction it feels like sonic wants to go. The camera is free but still always where it needs to be, and as such doesn't get stuck at awkward cinematic angles that impede platforming, the physics of spark feel consistent no matter the speed with momentum staying just as it needs to be and air dashes feeling incredibly consistent, the enemies while sometimes annoying are usually more of an obstacle to sonic in a positive, interactive way rather than being purely platforms, even if you're tempted not to homing attack them for the sake of preserving momentum finger gun does at least help, there aren't any particular stage gimmicks that seemingly slow down the pace for absolutely no reason, even when the stage gimmicks are there they are fun or are still rather swift and enjoyable, or at least build up speed and don't take away from the experience, they don't force you to say homing attack 6 times. the leaning on rails brings interaction,

I could keep going, while this isn't exactly trying to be boost formula sonic or anything and as such can't be stated to be outright better, it is frankly more polished than any boost formula game and feels incredibly freeing to play through, in a lot of ways it is how I wish 3D sonic played, if not outright.

oh and if you just like looking through levels and stuff this game is ridiculously open in that regard in a lot of levels. It doesn't do it all but it does a lot. I only wish there was more but Lake Fepard deserves to work on whatever they please IMHO

TLDR you like sonic or high speed platformers, hell platformers in general, do yourself a favor and get this game, it is an incredible gem and you are unlikely to regret it. It is not exactly sonic, it is very sonic adjacent, could use touch ups in the visual department, at least in some levels, but is incredibly good.

This game sees Fromsoft not only adopting current trends and executing them well but is the culmination of all of their work, I have barely progressed the story, which is more understandable than ever before, and I have explored so much and had so much fun in spite of that. While there are a few bosses that take from enemies and other bosses the unique ones along side the different dungeons, weapons, and sheer quantity of meaningful finds in this game far outweigh the gripe of mild copy paste.
The combat system is a more refined verison of 3, r1s are far less prominent, the new stance system making r2s, jumping r2s and ashes of war, this games version of weapon arts, being far more worthwhile this time around. The spell casting has more variety than before and now has special repeat use animations and functions as well as the ability to hold and charge certain spells, they feel rather nice to use this time around. miracles, or invocations, even received a notable glow up.
Everything just feels good and fun to use, everything has a function and if you ever feel a boss is too hard you always can bounce off of it and do something else, something the game is not afraid to tell you from the start via halberd and large pointed stick to your characters head. It is good then that there are far more unique feeling rewards than korok seed #305 or random crafting materials or being that one more outpost until you unlock something actually cool. No shade to breath of the wild of course, it is a good game.
While there are minor flaws this game, overall this is just the best Fromsoft has ever done.

Early Access Review
it's good, the ost is good, the gameplay is good and engaging, the lore, at least what is there so far, is good. This could release in it's current state if not for the missing lore logs, though there will surely be more to this game when it comes out I'm sure.
