After putting in around 143 hours in the betas and an additional 270 hours into the game after launch I think its probably best I review it. In short, this game is incredible. The gunplay feels very tight, the destruction is unrivaled in any PvP title, and I frequently am just blown away by how well everything in the sandbox interacts. You will frequently have an "only in battlefield" moment in this game, where you are sprinting through a building collapsing around you, only to barely escape with your life. I would say it this game looks like an uncharted action sequence at least once every hour, and its not scripted at all. Arguably even more importantly, Embark clearly cares a lot about their game. They are releasing significant patches with balance patches, new modes, new events, and bug fixes quite literally every week, with a team that is only a 10th the size of a triple A studio. Even better, the game is free to play in a very reasonable way. Cosmetics are all that can be bought, and the battlepass is both pretty quick to finish and also pays for itself in premium currency. Even better, there are great cosmetics attached to gameplay rewards and events that can be earned for free. This game is clearly a work of love from embark, and it is clearly seen in how they communicate with the community and how they approach feedback. They have focused on balancing frustrating interactions and kept the sandbox pretty stable despite the changes. The game is the most balanced its ever been right now, and considering how many things they have to juggle to get it to work its shocking they even managed.

All this being said, I think there are some valid concerns people have:

1. Optimization. This game is actually incredibly optimized considering the technology at play, but you need a pretty good CPU to not have stuttering issues. My i7 9700k would stutter basically every time a large building would begin to collapse, but was otherwise stable. This game is very CPU constricted, to the point that you can render the game down to like 480p and see zero improvement in FPS. Since its free, I would recommend trying it to see if your CPU can handle it, but its clear that server side physics and destruction is quite taxing on the CPU in a way that most modern games are not.

2. Solo play. This game, like many team based games, really struggles when you try to play it alone, without communication of any kind. Since the time to kill is noticeably slower than most titles, team shooting is vital to clearing enemies effectively, and having any teammate that simply does not play with the team spells doom for your chances at winning. This game is fun enough that victory really isn't needed to enjoy the experience, but in ranked especially I cannot recommend playing alone. I have played about 99% of my time in ranked as a 3 stack in discord, and I would recommend anyone who wants to meaningfully improve and play to their best level do so. If you are someone who prefers playing alone or does not like team focused shooters, this game is not the best option for you. It's free so you might as well try it, but don't be surprised if it feels quite punishing in that regard.

2. Ranked/Cheating. I have spent a vast majority of my time in ranked, reaching Diamond 1 in two betas and season 1 so far. I really enjoy the mode itself, but the anti cheat at play (EAC) is clearly not cutting it. The density of hackers varies from patch to patch, but on average cheaters are almost a guarantee in any individual tournament of 16 teams, and not subtle ones either. We are talking explicit aimbot, shooting people through walls or shields, everything absurd. In my experience it is actually pretty possible to beat cheaters due to their awful game sense and a bit of luck, but it is still very demoralizing. This issue alone has put the game in a very rough state, and its something I hope embark is able to fix properly, and soon. Most of the people interested in playing at a competitive level left because of this issue, and I can understand why. I find the game so fun that I can still enjoy it despite this enormous issue, but I could understand why this would put players off. If you want to avoid it I would recommend avoiding ranked altogether. Outside of ranked they are exceptionally rare, and frankly this game is moreso focused on the casual aspects overall. It is a blast regardless of how you play it, but ranked is definitely the mode that needs the most help.

4. AI. You may have heard bits and pieces referring to AI being used for the commentators in this game. This is true, and honestly a pretty concerning development for those in the voice acting industry. The arguments the studio made for AI were not particularly strong either, typically not false but not entirely true arguments either, easily disprovable things, and so on. If the AI was actually used for things that simply cannot be done by a person (custom team names or usernames being mentioned for notable in game actions, 100s of different commentators, language localization to hundreds of countries, etc) I would not be annoyed by this problem, but unfortunately they are not used for these things, and even worse, are not even particularly good. the commentators are not noticeably off for the most part, but their dialogue is often corny and got stale pretty quickly. While this issue is unfortunate, I think two voice actors getting compensated for their work for these roles is a relatively minor offense, even if it could initiate a much larger shift in the future. This controversy is pretty subjective on how much it affects your opinion of the game, but since I haven't even heard them in 3 months it does not come up often for me (they can be muted).

Despite this, I still recommend this game. It is the best shooter I have played in 10 years, and its not close. A perfect blend of chaos, strategy, meme strategies, satisfying gunplay and the most diverse sandbox I have seen in a game. The potential for counterplay is effectively infinite, both in loadouts and maps, and all of these things can shift at any moment. Matches can be won by the skin of your teeth with a clutch play in the last 5 seconds, or lost to a careless mistake just as quickly. I would not necessarily say this game is competitive like CS or Valorant, and frankly it isn't trying to compete with that market, but it is a masterpiece in my eyes. Exciting to the very end and endlessly entertaining.

10/10 would recommend, I'll see you in the finals.

after a solid 6 months or so I figure I can update:

the game feels incredible as it always has, with a handful of hiccups in terms of balance and game mode choices for ranked. That being said, I can still say this game is good. In fact, its also way more optimized. At the same time I think its a game that is much harder to get into now. With such a small dedicated community most of the players you play against will be significantly better than an average random in some other game. Its the same problem that games like titanfall 2 and apex have, where the barrier to entry gets higher as the community gets smaller. Not really sure how they fix that, but I have reached nearly 700 hours in a little under a year on this game, and I've enjoyed just about all of it. It is probably my favorite multiplayer game of all time, and I don't see anything surpassing it in the near future.

All I hope for now is that the game survives. With such a small population (albeit a stable one), I worry that nexon will simply end the game because it doesn't make enough money. I assume the game is definitely profitable considering their overhead is relatively small compared to an average AAA studio, while still likely making a killing with microtransactions, but nexon has a history of killing successful games just because they wanted more from them. We can only hope, but until then I will continue to enjoy this masterpiece of PvP game design.

After completing basically every activity I think it is safe to say I can review the game properly. This game is genuinely great. It's a massive open world GTA title but with the fun car driving and none of the other garbage, albeit the cars are a bit less grippy than the absurdly grippy cars of GTA 5.

While it absolutely does have some stability issues and the like, they seem to be hard at work correcting these issues and the core game is still pretty fantastic. There are tons of collectibles, tons of races, tons of cars, and lots of stuff to do, and even 70 hours in I still have a decent amount of stuff to do before i get 100% in the game.
9/10, probably a 10 once all the kinks are sorted out. It's just really fun for everyone.

So I am giving this a positive review with a big caveat. This game is incredibly addicting, and especially around new content releases this game will literally consume 100s of hours in the matter of a month. That being said, there are long periods of time where this game does not have anything to do if you grind games properly.

Play this game when new content launches, have some of the best time you've ever had playing a video game, and then step away after a few weeks. It makes the waiting hurt less, as Bungie does not seem to be currently capable of making an MMO style game with constant staying power throughout the year.

The excitement of doing your first raid, especially with friends, is something special and is something I have not come across in another title. Play for those experiences, avoid burn out. While my hours on steam aren't insane compared to others, I had only started playing post steam transition when the most recent expansion came out. That would put me at nearly 200 hours in a little under two months for context. The gunplay is great, the PvE is genuinely fun, and the crucible is typically balanced well enough (stasis has upended that recently, would not recommend at the moment).

Give it a try, its free to play, so you might as well see if something appealing is there.

I am so unsure of how to rate this game honestly. While I do enjoy the DIRT Rally series I was fully expecting the arcade focused experience, and enjoyed it for a bit. That being said, this game just has so many little things that drive me crazy.'

♥♥♥♥
Optimization- I have seen a little bit of both sides here, but the optimization (as well as settings for that matter) are pretty poor on my Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. It sits at about 60 fps on medium settings, which is worse than just about every other title I own, while not really looking that good.

Gameplay- this one is only targeted towards two things: gymkhana and the sidecars. The former just feels unwieldy and inconsistent, while the latter is downright infuriating to control consistently. While the latter might not come up for everyone, it was leagues harder than the rest of an otherwise extremely easy game. (There is also something weird about steering left and right relatively often back and forth that creates this weird delay in turning. Super disorienting while
playing but never came up in the campaign, and instead on the playground tracks)
Campaign- Its just boring. While you can run through the campaign in just about 4 hours, completing every event available is miserable. I have become bored with the same tracks and the same races after only 4-5 hours. Technically there is a lot of content, but doing the same race 3 times at different points in the campaign is not fun or interesting.

Stability- the game just crashes a lot, and it seems unclear as to why. I have probably had the game crash 15-20 times in 8 hours of total play time, and while they aren't bluescreening my PC like modern warfare could do, it is still fairly annoying.
This is exasperated by the last ♥♥♥:

Loading time- specifically when launching this game, it takes like a full minute before anything shows up. I have the game on an NvME drive that loads just about everything else in less than 10 seconds, let alone a minute later. Actual loading times once in game are quick and snappy, but the initial load has the speed of a game from 10 years ago.

Meh
Graphics- I kind of touched on this, but the game does not look that good, and almost looks like dirt rally 2.0 but in the wrong resolution. It just looks extremely average, while beating up your pc in the process.
Wheel support- This could probably be listed as a ♥♥♥, but since it has no bearing on my personal experience I will list it here. It is quite odd to not have wheel support at launch for a racing game, even if it is an arcade focused one.

Pros
Aesthetic- thematically this game is really well done. It doesn't take itself too seriously and really pops from menus to gameplay. The game is just colorful and bright in a cohesive way.

Gameplay- besides the things I mentioned before, the gameplay is fun. I have found it a bit too easy for the most part, but cars handle relatively well (except the minor steering issue). The cars do end up feeling quite similar to each other, but the handle somewhat consistently and remind me of driving cars in motorstorm, albeit with a bit of understeer at all times.

Playground/User created tracks- This is probably the shining achievement of this game in the sense of something they nailed. The editor is relatively intuitive and the having community made tracks will certainly increase the longevity of the title in the years to come. Super fun to just play a bunch of tracks that are completely different from anything in the main game.

Would I recommend this game? Probably not. At its current pricepoint it isn't worth it, but I would pick this game up at 10 bucks or something. There is some fun to be had with relatively mindless racing against a bunch of other racers on tracks around the world. I am hoping some of the minor issues end up being missing in the future, but the core of the game isn't fun, even if the package is nice and shiny. However, if you are looking for motorstorm on PC, I think this is the best option available at the moment, and considering the trend of current racing games it will likely stay that way.

I think the people who should never buy this game though are any sim racer people. Dirt Rally 2.0 is literally better in every single way, and its not close. The game is dumb fun and should be treated as such. If you are looking for that experience you will likely enjoy this game much more than dirt 4, which had a bit of an identity crisis and stuck more in the rally direction.

After having bought this game for PC and Switch, I can safely say the game is good. The main issues with the game come down to pacing issues if you do not like grinding and bugs, which will hopefully be ironed out in the coming months. Personal recommendation is to pick it up, and if you don't like it, just wait a few months and come back. The gameplay is fluid, the tracks are fantastic, and the bikes are responsive. This will undoubtedly be considered one of the best trials games in the coming years, but its launch has been a bit rough.

UPDATE: Now that all the DLC is out, I figured I should update my review. The game has improved, but it has not reached it's optimal state quite yet. Despite that, all of the tracks added are fantastic as usual, and many much needed quality of life changes have been added in the past few months.

All in all though, the game has the same upsides and downsides.
Pros:
Gameplay
Map design
Crossplatform leaderboards
Removed tricks (the worst part of fusion)
Official ninja tracks

♥♥♥♥:
UI
A variety of bugs (seems to be steadily decreasing)
A dead global multiplayer on PC
Questionable ELO system for said multiplayer
Performance issues (mileage may vastly vary)

Meh:
Substantial grind (this is much less tedious thanks to the dlc tracks)

All in all, this game is all I wanted in a trials game. It may not be polished to where the dev team wants it to be, but damn is it fun

This game is pretty good. Unique and balanced would be some great descriptions for it. Despite it's community being small and its content not being substantial (to be fair, it was much less before), I love the concept and enjoy the gameplay.

After so many hours playing this game, I have found that it is still extremely fun. Not having the season pass makes the online portion of the game much less interesting, but otherwise I cannot think of a flaw with this game. Everything makes sense once you master it. Many recent reviews I am seeing seem to think the game is random, and the only portion that feels like that is FMX tracks, which were always a wonky addition. Thankfully they are almost nonexistent and rarely show up during the game, meaning that a large majority of the game is actually just trials the way we wanted. I recently purchased evolution and realized how far they came with this title, and I can't wait for the sequel.
EDIT: 4 years later and this game is still great. The main difference between evolution and fusion for me in the sense of gameplay is the flow of the bike. Fusion just feels smoother, with the best bike feeling like butter when you are nailing a track. I love this game and put a lot of hours into it, and I would highly recommend it. It is great.

EDIT OF EDIT: despite the release of trials rising, fusion is probably the better title overall. I would recommend this one over rising if you want are more generally positive experience, and after 300+ hours put into this game, it is still fun and I am still improving.
