My initial review of this game was extremely positive. The gameplay covers some the most under-explored elements of shooters, smart positioning and careful well intentioned gunplay. The game asks you to forget everything you knew about the shoot-first-ask-questions-later mentality engendered by so many shooters and it forces you to think so much about each and every move you're about to commit to. It really lets you get into the mind of cold blooded Hunter and the aesthetics absolutely help with that mindset as well. The desolate lands of the bayou is filled with the undead and no monster is scarier than other, cold and calculated killer Hunters, the game oozes western gothic vibes and it all culminates into a very dynamic and engaging experience.

However I have to make my voice heard and leave a negative review. I'm not a fan of the direction the developers are taking the game. Balance issues aside I seriously disagree with the monetization tactics being implemented, before you used to earn a "premium" currency by simply playing the game, this currency can be spent on skins for guns and Hunters. This system in my opinion was a core for the game's progression, sure you can play to earn a higher rank and the satisfaction of getting better at the game, but also you would receive the satisfaction of slowly building your dream loadout, your favorite legendary hunter wielding guns you imagine they'd carry, you make a little story in your head about their intentions and why they wield this arsenal. Maybe you'd make a set that you felt represents your playstyle the best. It is no doubt that the customization was a driving factor in play incentive and player retention.
What's more so, earning the premium currency was tied to actions you did in game, it incentivized you to go for riskier and more challenging plays. A lone Hunter is running away with a bounty and you already have a bounty from the same boss? You might try to kill them simply for the premium currency reward. You already banished a boss and the extract is a two steps away? Maybe try to banish the other boss for more premium currency. The premium currency was something you got to keep regardless of whether your Hunter made it out alive or not, so it encouraged riskier play making and more active decision making.

The premium currency earned through actions taken in game is going to be removed next patch. And in its place we're getting a weekly questline where one can earn a fraction of what one was capable of earning. You will have to grind for 20 weeks to earn enough currency for ONE good looking legendary Hunter. The questline forces the player to deviate from their gameplans and play sub optimally occasionally, and it doesn't in any way shape or form reward players for being active decision makers, it in fact does the opposite by having many quests tied to killing NPCs in various ways, instead of encouraging the Hunter to Hunt the objective and make risky decisions the questline might have you running around avoiding the main objective looking for that ONE type of NPC which you have to kill in an inefficient manner. It's flat out unengaging and bad design which doesn't spark joy.

I seriously love this game and I want to see it grow bigger, I understand that the game needs funding and that's why these changes were implemented but sacrificing core progression for monetization was NOT THE PLAY. The developers can simply stop developing items that can be purchased with the premium currency and instead work on more DLC, which they already sell in droves. Or they simply could have worked harder on making a way for DLC cosmetics to be more distinguished and more desirable. But no, they decided that they want to strip cosmetics away from the core game progression. I can't stand by those changes and my review will stay negative until the developers find a work around or go back on those changes.

If you're buying this game with hope that one day you will have the cosmetic loadout you dream of, then unless you're willing to shill money you won't be having that. The only progression you will be going for is your rank, and your level/prestige, and the prestige system is far overdue for a rework that in its current state it's so non rewarding that most players don't even engage with it. You'd be BUYING this multiplayer only game with only moderately rewarding progression.
