The game itself is amazing, nothing quite like it. The community can be toxic, but so are most games and once you join a company it gets way better. The major problem is they've promised a lot of content that they either haven't released after quite a while, or that they've completely abandoned. Every major update is has been cosmetic and only one that fixed the major crash issues, but that was back in January. Since then they've added no substantial content that keeps the game interesting or fun, and for a game in early access as long as this it's unreasonable. They haven't added a map in years and still haven't added cavalry after announcing long ago. If you are wanting to buy this game, you should definitely wait until the developers begin adding content again.

Wonderful, buggy but wonderful.

So I didn't write a review when the game first came out because I wanted to give Rome II a chance to fix itself and, while I almost gave up hope, years later it finally lives up the expectations. I have put over 1,000 hours of gameplay into not only the grand campaign but the various campaigns that have come out since like Caesar in Gaul or more recently Rise of the Republic. Most of the bugs have been fixed in the updates and the political system has significantly improved since launch, and it appears the AI has also improved. While it is not perfect, it is still an amazing game that immerses you in the ancient world and would recommend it to all strategy gamers. If you were unsatisfied with the game at launch I would implore you to give it another go.
