Literally hours of endless entertainment. Rework Delirium, rework Greedier, rework Jacob & Esau and the game is practically perfect

TL;DR if you like older style JRPGs and are fine with some typical monotony that they're known for, pick this game up when it goes on sale.

I played this game on 3 playthroughs back when it was out on PS2, so I think I'm qualified to give this game a review.

Great game, with a very large footnote: it's an old school turn based JRPG. If you get frustrated with random encounters and old dungeon designs which require a lot of backtracking, don't buy the game. It's the core gameplay loop and you are going to get really tired and frustrated when the tedium sets in. That being said, the standouts are 100% the boss fights. Unlike most other JRPGs where you can just grind to turn your party into a powerhouse and then steamroll a boss that was giving you trouble, SMT doesn't play around. It expects you to constantly upgrade and redirect your party through the fusion system. It does not matter how strong you are - bosses expect you to play by the rules they give you. The Press Turn system allows for really neat bosses that challenge your understanding of the game. Enemies can abuse you just as easily as you can abuse them.

But do yourself a favor and make sure you download the free Chronicle Pack (or buy the Maniax pack if you want Dante) because if you just assumed it was already in the base game (like I did), you are gimping yourself out of some of the best content this game has to offer. And the last thing you want to do is spend 4 hours on the game before realizing you're playing the worse version of it.

That being said, should you buy this game for $50? No, absolutely not. This is an upscaled PS2 game that cut a lot of corners - music is still horrendously compressed (though there is a mod that fixes most of it), cutscenes are pulled right out of the OG game and in its native aspect ratio, so it's jarring. Game is locked to 30 FPS (probably because it was hard coded that way being a PS2 game), but they could have at least tried to give us the option. This is a game that is asking nearly full price when the only substantial changes it has over an upscaled emulated version is voice acting and the ability to choose skills manually for your demons. That's it. IMO, the more reasonable price point would be ~25 dollars.

This game is incredible. Please just ignore the people saying it's Undertale or Earthbound. Sure, it may draw some inspiration from those games. But it tackles much heavier themes and plays differently from them.

I cannot stress this enough - if you cannot handle themes of depression, anxiety, and guilt you should dodge this game or at the very least play it in short bursts.

Literally my only gripe with this game is that I wish it were longer. I feel like it only stood to benefit from having another 10 hours of main story gameplay, but that just may be because I adored everything about the game. The characters, the story, the art direction, the music etc.

There is a ton of side content you can do, so if you're the type to enjoy searching for it you'll have a great time.

The horror aspects of this game are done so well here too. Omocat just knows how to get under your skin with her art.

Fantastic game. Well worth the 20 bucks.

Fun game, something like a cross between Slay the Spire and the Mega Man Battle Network series. It can get a little overwhelming at times since unlike MMBN there's no time to "pause" during the fight and formulate a battle plan, and a lot of stuff ends up flying all over the screen. Can also be a little confusing trying to remember all the icons for each spell so you know what you're using. Still a ton of fun and a welcome addition to the library.
