This game is great. It can be described as a very simple combination of rhythm-based game and roguelike. Does it work, though? Hell yes.

The entire game revolves around the movement coordination, since you have to follow the beat to move and attack. The controls are effective in this regard, as you only require the arrow keys to do anything. Of course, the monsters also follow the beat to move, most often every other beat while you move on every beat. There is a benefit to keeping your rhythm going, as you will get more money from killing monsters when you do. Money can be spent on a variety of weapons within a play session that change the way you deal with monsters, but you can still beat the entire game with a simple knife if you know how. There are also diamond pickups, which let you buy upgrades outside a match to increase your chances, which you'll want to do if you ever plan to beat the game.

The music itself is composed by Danny Baranowsky and is simply stunning. I love listening to it even outside the game, and if that doesn't work for you, custom soundtrack from your own computer can be used instead. It even has gamepad support- yes, gamepads like the sort you'd see from an old Dance Dance Revolution arcade machine if you're into the game to that degree.

Each monster has a pattern of attack which you will probably need to figure out how to deal with to finish the game. And you will probably die many times trying, since this game has a permadeath system like many roguelikes. But the game is never punishing. You can look at how you died and see where you went wrong, so there's always room to improve instead of just feeling like the game made you fail. I'm happy to see games that do difficult but fun properly, and Necrodancer is one of them.

If you want an extra degree of challenge (since the game on its own isn't hard enough already), there are unlockable characters, each with their own quirks. No money, no killing monsters, only use one weapon, all beats are twice as fast, die instantly, there's a lot you can do. I won't spoil the story itself, but all the characters do tie in extraordinarily well, so if you feel like they're random, trust me, they're not.

I really wish I could talk more about this game, and how, there is a lot I haven't even touched on. But honestly? Crypt of the Necrodancer gets a glowing review from me. Buy the game, buy the soundtrack, even get a gamemat if you want to actually dance when you play. I haven't done it yet, but I might do it.

If I somehow still haven't sold you, the Collector's Edition (everything) is on sale for under 10$, and the core game for less than 5$. So go buy it! Trust me, you won't regret it.

This game is very fun! For the low price of free, you too can play in a world filled with hundreds of other players ready to help you slay all manner of elves, trolls, zombies, and even godlike entities on your quest to defeat Oryx the Mad God.

If there is a problem, it is mostly that getting far in the game is always a long grind because of the permadeath feature. Bind the Nexus key to something you will use and play with friends to make the most of this. In all, I recommend this game for anyone who enjoys a positive cooperative multiplayer rogue-like experience of a game. There is also premium content for those of you who like to spend money on free games.
