Definitely missed the hayday for this game... Very classic case of greedy devs destroying their game with pinpoint accuracy, targeting the best parts of the game, making them worse, ignoring public outcry, and repeating. Its honestly insane just how long its been since the devs have even interacted with any single player in this game (much less listened to any feedback), and the huge lack of any huge public figure in this game's media-sphere shows just how little they care about the playerbase. I have sunken many hours into this game for two reasons alone.

1) This is the only game of its type. The moment any competition is created, this game is going to be abandoned by any player that hasn't sunken thousands of dollars into it.
2) I have sunken a good chunk of change into this game and am hoping for a suddenly revival of goodwill shown to the players.

Crossout is a game that, as a new player, you will never have enough time or money for. Hurts me so much to write this review, but update after update showing they only care about their metrics. ie. time spent in game for players. Less and less respect is shown for our time playing this game.

5 hours in, and just beat the game for my first time, so here's my first impressions.

Gameplay:

Top down, beat-em-up roguelike with bullet-hell tropes sprinkled throughout.
Smooth, responsive controls.

Many weapons, each extremely different from the last with so many different ways to build each, I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. It feels like they took the idea of synergies from Enter the Gungeon, and jacked it up to the max.

The aim assist is tuned perfectly to feel like you still have to aim, and that you're not just instantly snapping to each target like in Call of Duty when you aim.

Easy to learn and hard to master, one of the trademark staples of a roguelike game that has endless replayability.

Art:

Beautifully stylized.
Bright, vibrant colors that match the theme of each Greek - Mythology inspired area; Greek mythology / Percy Jackson fans rejoice!
Attacks look and feel like they have weight to them. Very beautiful and varied artwork done for each weapon, and how each god given blessing affects their visuals, respectively with each different god.

Sound:
Music definitely serves to fill the mood in each area, and fits right in.
Nothing that stands out as its own trademark "This is the song the game will be known for", but is rather very atmospheric and ominous.
The vocals are actually quite a treat. In their old game, Bastion, I remember the voice acting being so jarring that it hampered my overall experience, skipping every line of dialog I could. In stark contrast, I'm finding myself very entranced with the vocals and personalities they've given each God and character.
Attacks sound as meaty as they look.

Overall:

Difficulty:
4/10 for veterans of top-down roguelikes / lites
8/10 for newcomers

Highly recommend for people of all types!

I'm usually very hesitant to buy old games, but at $5 it seemed like a steal.

The movement is beautifully smooth, and your creativity is the driving force. Situations can play out a hundred different ways depending on how you deal with them.

The world building is full of beautiful, bright colors with clear indication of where you need to go without sticking out like a sore thumb. Running through this dystopian city-scape is truly breathtaking, and the exhilaration of jumping from rooftop to rooftop made my heart pound unlike any other game I've played before.. its hard to believe this game is over a decade old.

The story... is admittedly not amazing. It feels as though bits and pieces are all strewn together and connected in convoluted ways just to give you a reason to explore the beautiful city. This story wasn't meant to bring you to some cathartic release, but rather there to give you a reason to leap from building to building. The gameplay is refreshing enough that it doesn't end up mattering all that much, especially considering the game's short duration.

If you want a truly unique experience, love to explore movement, and love to narrowly escape with quick impromptu decisions, this game is for you.

Hammerwatch as an ARPG

The Good:
Diablo-esque inventory / skill / loot system, with minor environmental (optionally permadeath) roguelike elements. Its on sale for a HUGE discount, play with a friend or solo for a few hours. Each class is tons of fun and very unique.

The Bad:
Normal difficulty is a cakewalk. You can walk around with your eyes closed in the beginning and still kill every enemy on screen, and the harder difficulties are locked until beating the game.

The community is abhorrent.

Saw another review detailing how rude / gatekeep-y the community was on discord, which is the ONLY place the community is present in, and decided to check for myself asking some basic questions. Upon detailing that I was a new player, just asking questions about this game I was pretty interested in, I was met with the response "And if u don't like it go play diablo" by an anonymous user. An admin also was pretty snarky with me at first, but loosened up after I took some of his "jabs".

The servers you create are NOT P2P
In a private game with my friend, with a password I selected at COMPLETE random (head smashing the keyboard until I hit the character limit), I was repeatedly joined by a user who refused to tell me how he joined. We just stopped playing for the night. This possibly details some security issues, as it does require you to sign in with an email before playing online. And your phone number to join the discord.

TL;DR
There's so much potential for this game to be good. Coming off of Hammerwatch, and loving Diablo-esque games, I really, really wanted to like this game. Maybe the discord members left a sour taste in my mouth, but the community / sleepwalk difficulty at first really makes you second guess if this is something you want to invest your time in.
Devs, your discord is actively ruining your game. A game with a strongly toxic community is not going to be played, no matter how wonderful it is.

Huge fan of DD1, probably around 500 or so hours when it came out on XBLA, and I loved it.
Enough time has passed that I felt like everything would feel nostalgic, and I have already forgotten most things about the game. Graphically, its like rediscovering the magic of DD all over again. Beautiful fantasy world. However, having second thoughts, as the first two levels I played included a bug that disabled my ability to click on anything inside of a menu. Couldn't upgrade skill points, change characters, look at my newly picked up items, and had to wait the full 60 seconds to continue to the second level due to the inventory / skill upgrade overlay not responding. After a relog, it seemed fine, then soon after I encountered the bug once again. Each time happened in the middle of distributing skill points. Will probably continue to play until around the 2 hour mark, just to see if its really worth the $.

Edit: Nostalgia goggles on too tight; the game is still fun. Very buggy and unoptimized, but QOL changes are still nice.
