TL;DR of the review is this: This is Subnautica but smaller, denser, less focused on progression and more the on world and the story. If you’re craving to dive into the waters of planet 4546B I couldn’t recommend it enough.

It's hard not to compare this game to the previous entry and Unknown Worlds had one hell of a challenge with making a sequel to the masterpiece that Subnautica is, especially without the ability to surprise you as much as a first game in a any series truly can. I play these games for their gameworlds and that’s the aspect I’m mainly going to focus on in this review.

Below Zero is a smaller game, mainly in game space as the map is smaller and not as deep as the first one and with a lot of unused land area. The smaller world changes the overall feel of the game. The exploration/discovery aspect of the game benefits greatly from that. The biomes are multilayered, much denser with a lot of detail, there's something interesting happening in every biome as opposed to some of big empty fields of the first one. I’m a big fan of fauna and creature designs and interactions in this game and it still delivers if you’re looking for a roadtrip on an alien world that you need to understand instead of fight to thrive.

The one area the game suffers from that is progression and direction. The first game was a great survival experience that made you feel the crushing weight of the ocean every time you had to go deeper. Here most of the areas are in the 0-300 depth and could be technically be explored with just the seaglide and some oxygen tanks. Technology upgrades feel more like just toys to play while in the original most significantly changed your relationship to the world, from survival through thriving and mastery. This game doesn't have the Cyclops because there's no need for a complex colossal mobile base designed to be operated by 2-3 people (and you have to alone) and it suffers from lack of that incentive and the triumph of overcoming those problems.

Another thing that the game lacks is direction. There’s no big thing that catches you attention like the Aurora so instead you explore this game more aimlessly which was something I personally enjoyed to an extent but also felt more clueless as to where to progress next.

The area in which the game focuses more instead of the first is the plot. This time you’re a character with motivations outside of just surviving and that’s reflected in the game world. Connecting the dots of scattered audiologs and environmental storytelling was enjoyable and a good motivation to explore the world. It also fleshes out a lot about the ancient Architect aliens which was a big hook for me.

I'm going to echo the most common stance I've seen on the game, get it if you're craving more Subnautica and love exploring and learning about an environment but it's a different experience from the first one and has a bit less content.

I lost my save file 10 hours in and I finished the game and I'm hunting for 100% achievements so that's something.
Yeah it can get a bit repetitive but that's in the name isn't it.

There's enought randomness to either carry your or not but not enought to be engaging.
The enjoyment quicly wears off.

I pickesd it up 3 days ago and since then I am compleatle glued to the game.
It's heavily competetive but it's not that hard to get into.

Great if you have to many monies on yourself.
Otherwise slam some guns on as many blocks as you can and compleatly destroy everyone who had acctualy spent time designing their vechicle.
