Holy smokes, what a world. I frequently think about how much I enjoyed my time in this game and how I'd want to do everything that happened before exactly the same again. Also tightroped over all the bugs which was probably a necessary part of me giving it such a favourable score.

Edit because CS2 released: Honestly CS2 is far superior, like a 5/10. But i have no respect for them keeping the same appID, removing achievements and workshop and keeping there reviews, so I'm keeping my original review below. Still has the worst gunplay and movement system in a game that can be considered playable and a majority of maps in circulation are very bad never pick them. I think the reason CS feels like nothing else is because it's so incredibly poor in its gunplay and movement that no one wants to copy that slop.

I do believe if this game didn't always have the popularity to back it up, it would not succeed due to how legitimately terrible it is. The Counter Strike lineage is too big to fail. This game has specific decisions in the gunplay that leads to consistently boring gunfights*, decisions in the movement systems that limit options, and therefore gameplay opportunities, in firefights† and map design that is only good in the maps that don't get played as people seem to stick with the poorly designed legacy maps‡.

In every place they possibly could when making a decision about the game they seem to have taking the option that removes decisions and emergent gameplay from the player, so the game may be a good fit for you if you want to do the same thing over and over again and memorise what to do instead of thinking on your feet, but to me this game has the most boring loop ever.

Edit after using more guns: A game with this poor gunplay cannot earn a 4 out of 10

*Spray patterns, weapon inaccuracy, lack of options to change weapon handling, not a single semi-automatic longarm
† Systems in this game cut the flight out of your "fight, flight or freeze" options when it comes to a fire fight, really dumbing down and boring-ing up every combat encounter in the game. Game also has an equipped weapon based speed penalty, which is all to common and all to boring.
‡ Inferno, Office, Tuscan and really a whole bunch of the removed maps are the good ones. Dust 2 is bad and has always been bad.
