When played it first upon release, I didn't understand the addiction under the spooky surface of this game.

Years after its release I get used to being killed and restarting from the check point, and I'd say it's a pretty fun game except that even you are very strong late in the game, you can easily be killed because of some stupid mistakes, (jumping from too high a place; hooking somewhere too far away from an edge to grasp; etc.), and you may piss youself off.

Ignore the plot and enjoy
