Come to think of it, that's how I treat most of my games: no pain, no gain. Mod it until it breaks, then study the pieces to see what fractured where so I can graft my own stuff into it then patch it up to run again.

Most of that time is spent tinkering and cobbling together my own mods, while doing live autopsies on the game to see what does what.
