If the RNG bothers you, I would look up some various character builds to see how to play each character to his or her strengths. Some characters like Thane are very versatile, especially when you combine him with the -1AP Mountain Ring, whereas Horace is fairly limited because of his low wits. (4 Wits is what you want, min.) Another piece of advice, don't hoard any cards (unless it's like gear you want;) the more new cards you get, the more you can mitigate the reliance on RNG.
