Hello, I have not played this game, however it is still keen to let me review it for some reason. It's on my wishlist and it's hard to be mad about the 19.99 price point. Maybe I'll give it a buy.

In my opinion this game is a fun little romp, and good to play in short bursts or with your friends. While combat remains simple, it is competent, and the iconic cartoonish style art, along with the wide variety of locations your characters can go make the game a blast to play. Goons and frequent boss fights are varied, and there is even an occasional minigame to break things up. Additionally there are arenas, and a couple mini games you can pick from the main menu if you want to jump right into the action. This game is a blast and it’s a classic for a reason. Castle Crashers keeps you on your toes with it’s impressive and varied level design, and this competence, as well as it’s ease of access make this game a must play.

Now first I want to say that the original Hotline Miami set a high bar. While its impact might seem outsized today, its impact on the indie industry was monumental, and I personally gave it Indie Legend Status. Hotline Miami’s perfect combination of eclectic soundtrack and grungy retro visuals, it’s high-stakes fast-paced gameplay, and it’s psychedelic vaporwave storytelling combined with a penchant for over the top violence and gore sealed Hotline Miami’s place as one of the all time greats. Not to mention it being a breakout title for Devolver Digital, one of the premier indie publishers today.

Now, how does a sequel live up to that? Well it doesn’t break the basics. Hotline Miami 2 hits the ground running with that fast paced top down high stakes combat, and it doesn’t pull its punches. This game is tough. The difficulty basically starts where the first left off, and even some of the earliest levels can be quite punishing. This game expects you to have experienced the first game, and it isn’t going to hold your hand as you figure out the mechanics and learn how to play. The original hotline miami was pretty short, and hotline miami 2: wrong number delivers just a bit more. Despite its original conception as DLC, Hotline Miami 2 is a longer experience then the first,. I spent a little over 7 hours working my way through the game, and while I’m by no means skilled at this type of game, I was coming right off the original so I carried over some of my coordination and reflexes I picked up in the first game. Just like the first game, the amount of time it takes you to beat may vary depending on how good you are, and how long you are willing to grind in order to beat levels or achieve higher scores.

Otherwise, Hotline Miami 2 is just more. It has more questions, more answers, more gameplay, more characters. If you liked the first you'll like the second, check it out!

Hotline Miami is a fast-paced top down 2d action game, with an almost ‘grungy’ pixel art aesthetic with a classic CRT TV filter and a little bit of wobble thrown over for good measure. This game is gratuitously violent in a way that only indie games can be. It can be finger numbingly difficult. It’s pulpy. It’s Psychedelic. It oozes with all of the energy of the 1980s Vice that inspired it. It’s Hotline Miami.

The first thing that will hit you is this games incredible digital soundtrack. Not only is it catchy, but it fits the vibe of the game so well. Without being too cliche -- I feel like it captures the vibe of Miami in the 80s. Its a little bit tropical, relatively up beat, but not without an unnerving undertone.

The game sets it’s stage well, where you are with a hobo who teaches you how to play the game which in this case, he teaches you how to kill. You will also go to a common recurring cutscene where you’ll meet three mysteriously masked figures. An Owl, A rooster, and a horse. They speak ominously, and ask you questions about who you are, what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it. There is a core mystery to the game, and these 3 masked figures only ever leave you with more questions than answers.

Then, there is the core game play loop. You wake up in your apartment. You can walk around, see that the set dressing may or may not have changed a bit, and then you go to the answering machine where you are left with a vague message that always has conveys hidden meaning. Maybe someone will be calling requesting a plumber to unclog a tough drain, or maybe they’re calling for a DJ to really light up a party. Regardless of the circumstance of the phone call, you will show up to the address provided on your answering machine, and proceed to slaughter every living being in the building. When you’ve finished you’ll drive to one of a few familiar repeated locations where your same friend will be working, regardless of whether its a pizza place, video rental, or grocery store. You will always be serviced by the same guy who will give you whatever the establishment sells for free because you are such a good friend. He’ll usually say something about how terrible all of the recent violence has been, and how happy he is to see you safe. It always leaves you with a feeling of unease, but after completing a tricky level, his face is always a welcome one. You’ll get back into your tricked out 80’s delorean style car, and proceed back to your apartment to begin the entire process over again.

Now that I have those basic story trappings out of the way, I want to talk about the game play. Each level starts with you picking an animal mask to put on. While initially you’ll be restricted to a very small number of masks, this number will go up consistently. Each mask is associated with a different bonus to make the game easier, or in some cases even tougher.

After your initial choice you’re sent into a level. Typically they consist of a couple of segments, with the transition of each segment serving as a checkpoint. This is important because you will die a lot. The enemies are brutal, fast, and unforgiving. In order to succeed, you need to be more brutal, faster, and even less forgiving. Where there are benefits and bonuses to those who want to self-challenge and build up a lot of combos, take on many enemies at once, or use certain weapon techniques, the game is perfectly serviceable with a slower playstyle - although arguably it is less fun and you will receive a lesser “grade” on your gameplay. Sometimes I appreciate just being able to get through a level without so much a focus on high scores as they can be difficult at times. If score chasing is something you like, you’ll be right at home with this game, and it sure is satisfying to build up massive combos.

Every level you’ll have multiple options to succeed. Maybe you’ll rely on doors to knock people down, and use sneaky melee weapons. Maybe you’ll use loud guns to make a lot of noise and gather big groups of enemies to kill all at once with a well placed shotgun blast. Oftentimes for me, I’ll end up trying a whole bunch of styles until I either get my routine down to a science, or just get lucky enough on a run to make it through. I rarely accumulate a score yielding higher than a B, but when I nail that gameplay loop just right, it sure is cathartic.

Hotline Miami is a blast, and it is definitely an indie classic. Check it out!

And with that experience I can say that I personally love Dinkum. The voxel style really sticks out to me and it makes the landscape unique, easy to change, and realistic - in a cartoony way. The vibe here is really unique and I think Dinkum is a worthy inclusion in a genre that has seen a lot of entries in recent years. I played a lot of animal crossing when it came out, and recently started a new island, but I struggle with the daily nature of things and the progress tied to real time. Animal crossing becomes such that it feels like a chore that I need to do every day. Dinkum has a lot of the charm from animal crossing (minus the animals), and many similarities, but it fixes this issue entirely by not locking the game to real time. Progress is still slow, but if you have the time to work through the days, you can keep making progress the entire time you’re sitting down for a play session. Dinkum won’t penalize you for missing a day. While it does need to be played in roughly half an hour chunks to get the most out of every day, it is a bite size piece that I’ve been able to plan my gaming time around, and it works well. This game has a lot of characters, and it is always fun working towards that next villager moving in, or getting enough permit points for that new and exciting permit.

Its systems are all competent. Fishing is unique and fun. Bug catching is almost second nature. Metal detecting is new and interesting. It is nice to wander around the forests just looking for fruit to cook, and running away from the scary lizards or Emus. Hunting is challenging but rewarding. Shoveling works realistically (at least comparatively). Every little system here comes together as part of a greater whole.

It is also worth mentioning that there is multiplayer support in this game, a game that’s fun on it’s own can only be more fun with your friends. I didn’t try it out, but it’s worth noting that it is there.

As far as the farming/life sim genre goes, Dinkum is easily one of my favorites. I look forward to continuing to play days here and there, and for its eventual full release. That slow incremental progress day to day, and watching my community grow before my eyes is a truly rewarding experience. Dinkum has earned its niche in the genre.

I got this on a humble bundle with some other games for only 12, and it's been forever since I've played a Call of Duty or WW2 game. I've only done the singleplayer, but it is mostly satisfying so far, although the stealth missions certainly aren't my favorite. Fun romp though

Wow, This game is not what I remember the batman games being. I heard it was bad. I bought it because it was cheap. It was amusing somewhat, however the "batmobile" is completly uninteresting to drive, and is a major part of getting anywhere BETWEEN missions and DURING missions. You use it way to much and it's not a ton of fun. I didn't play the whole game, but I think this one will join the backlog for a little while.
