I have always been a big fan of open world games, as well as games that include random generation. Unreal World is both of these, along with many other themes that are so incredibly rare to find bundled into a single game. I know anything I say in this review will not come close to doing the game justice, but I hope I can sway any readers into trying this wonderful gem if they are a fan of this kind of game.

Unreal World is based on Finland during the late iron age, roughly 800 - 1200 AD. While there a few fantasy themes in Unreal World, I consider this game to be pretty realistic. The fantasy themes I mentioned are mostly your character's religous beliefs, which are modeled after Finnish beliefs during the time period. If you have to swim across a river for example, it is a good idea to perform a ritual to "banish the evil water guardian" so that you will be less likely to drown in the process.

The game is a huge world to explore, randomly generated for every character you make. When you create your character, after selecting what tribe you are from, picking a character portrait, and other things, you will be able to pick a starting scenario if you wish. The scenario doesn't affect the gameplay, only the circumstances you begin the game with. Will you be an aspiring farmer, starting the game with a shovel and some seeds to start your very own farm? Or perhaps you have come across an abandoned campsite, with its creator nowhere to be found? There are many ways to start your game, and as many ways to play the game as you can imagine.

There are no restrictions of what you can and can not do. Will you build a cabin far off into the woods, trapping animals and selling their fur to a nearby village? Or maybe you prefer the life of a hermit, living off the land, avoiding human contact completely.

I can ramble all day about this game, but like I said, anything I say in this review is not going to even come close to how great this game is. If you are a fan of wilderness survival games, this game is for you. Some people may be turned away because of the old school graphics, but I can tell you without any doubt in my mind that this game more than makes up for that with the incredible amount of realism it contains, along with a refreshing break from the modern world to a time so long ago, it seems totally unreal.
