Fantastic game. One of my personal favorites, as a strategy game fan.

KIDS CANT AFFORD THE LATEST BATTLEFIELD SO THEY PLAY ANYTHING ON STEAM THAT IS FREE AND STILL NOT BE SATISFIED WITH WHAT THEY CAN MANAGE TO PLAY ON THEIR PARENTS HANDMEDOWN LAPTOP AND COME HERE TO TALK ♥♥♥♥ ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE OF GETTING CALLED A ♥♥♥♥♥♥ WHEN THEY COME ON RAINS(only server with 20 people on) AND ANNOUNCE TO EVERYONE THAT THE GAME IS DEAD UPON SEING THE SERVER LIST.

Diverse and chaotic community. From the mature, competetive and sweaty veterans, to the late night casuals in to catch a buzz and have a couple laughs. The snobbish europeans, to the middle easterns with several indivual air conditioners in their sweaty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ room. You'll find it all, and you'll find your place.
I am very greatful for the good times the NT community has given me
Time must be put into this game before it gives you something in return

Edit 4 Years Later: Thanks for all the nice comments, I had never bothered to check :)

Watched a video of someone playing the open beta while I was on the toilet, that details important because it's all I can remember. The next thing I know I was in the game flying WW2 biplane that handled like an extension of my own body. It became my favorite game instantly.

In the first weeks of open beta War Thunder was already the most popular flight sim ever made. You see, they had the revolutionary idea of making a game that's playable without literally having to learn how to fly an airplane- You didn't need a stick, it was free, and it was actually FUN. To this day, it's the only way you can easily appreciate the high standard for detail and realism that sims elusively enjoy. The idea of this game, which was already perfect in my eyes, growing beyond a WW2 flight sim excited many people. and boy did it grow. But one day, Gaijin completely stopped developing the game. Oh they still have plenty of major, ground-breaking updates, like "overhauling" the sound for the 11th time or adding a single controversial vehicle that half the community begs for while the other half petitions (because it would absolutely break the game); people don't come to this game because it's balanced. War Thunder consistently has surprise updates that add 6-16 new variants of a vehicle already in the game, in their update preview videos you'll find a British narrator ensuring you these vehicles are essential with historical footnotes like: "𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 5 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 *𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤* 𝘺𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵 (the only notable difference from the other 12 Shermans already in the game)."

I had to make a conscious effort to put it down when their goals moving forward became perfectly clear. War Thunder started as a game, but I genuinely don't believe it can be called that anymore. You can more reasonably view it as a co-dependent relationship between people with a niche interest and a business taking full advantage of the limited market. Players are fully aware of this and continue to play no matter how frustrated they get with problems the game's had since day 1. The most common rationalization you'll hear is "you don't need to pay if you get good, yes there are glaring flaws that make WT a horrible and time wasting experience, but the high tier gameplay is worth the grind."
The most engaging gameplay that everyone covets is on a single gamemode, the only gamemode in the game since beta: Domination- sit in the circle longer than the other team. From the second world war to the modern proxy wars of today, you will be fighting for the A point, dying for the B point, and telling your grand kids stories of how you captured C point. When you master the complex mechanics of this sim, this is the most interesting way to test your skills and compete with others. The other game modes are just "shoot this rock, stop the enemy from shooting your rock".

I've heard someone say "gameplay in War Thunder is like driving a Ferrari around a parking lot".

This review is more of a form of personal closure than an attempt to dissuade others. If you you have avid interests in strategy, engineering, shooting things, or simply wish to enrich your suburban white male historical fixations, then you will 100% find something fun in War Thunder. If you don't care about paying your way up the ladder, go right ahead! If you can enjoy this game to its fullest without feeling guilty about stomping people who grind for weeks what you do in a day, then you're smarter than anyone that calls you a wallet warrior. The only criticism I have for Gaijin is that I wish they treated their cows better.
