Fun little metroidvania with some tough, but generally not unreasonable, boss battles.

Fun puzzles, excellent writing. Some people at Croteam definitely got to flex their philosophy educations again.

Sequel also changes all the things that I found annoying in the first game.

Great story that ties in neatly to the rest of the Terminator franchise.

Fast paced with lots of variety and options in weapons and perks. Despite that, I generally find it pretty calming.

Fun rhythm shooter with an entertaining enough story (that I want to see more of!). Played on the middle difficulty and have a lot of shooter experience, and some experience with other rhythm based shooter/action games, and found that difficulty to be a bit easy. Maybe should have tried the harder difficulty.

Really tight controls and well designed combat. Characters are silly and interesting. It's nice moderate length game.

Pros: More EDF shooty fun; the graphical redesign is pretty great, and there's a somewhat improved focus on story telling. I also really enjoy that weapons are no longer attached to specific character classes and that there's a lot of player character customization options. The altered character class abilities are very fun too.

Cons: Everything costs money (amount given based on mission completion - items used during the mission) and energy gems (dropped by enemies), including health upgrades which is a very gradual and continuous process in other EDF games. Iron Rain fixes weapon and item unlocks to completion of specific missions on specific difficulties, so there's no grinding to find a weapon (as in mainline EDF games), but there is a very intense grinding to get the resources necessary to buy the weapons you unlock, credits in particular. This money grind combined with item usage counting against your reward disincentivizes using a lot of otherwise potentially fun items and vehicles.

Anyways, despite my misgivings about the progression systems, I think some of the other changes from the standard EDF game formula are really positive, and I hope more EDF games adopt them.

Continues a recent trend of having pretty bad main questlines, but I'm a huge fan of the outpost system, the DLCs, and the graphical improvements. Keeps me coming back an oddly long time, which is more than I can say for a lot of other AAA open worlds.
