Knuckle Sandwich is a game worth playing to see it's interesting (at first) battle mechanics, and amazing art style. The game switches to a 3D polygonal style for some cutscenes and has well crafted pixel art for gameplay. The game was always was very engaging visually. As for battle mechanics, each enemy has usually one or two unique attacks that makes battles interesting and varied, as well as your own attacks having 3 different varieties of basic attack, and each party member has their individual unique special skills.

Knuckle Sandwich's weak point is hands down the storytelling. It is inconsistent, especially at the beginning, and will often have the player experience a TON of story in about 15 minutes, but the story vanishes for the rest of the dungeon/area aside from small flavor text which more often is a quip or gag about the current situation or surrounding area. The game often chooses these small jokes over any world building or character development, and the characters suffer as a result. Characters can be extremely one note, almost the entire game, with the standout exception being one wannabe thief character who has self doubt issues. Goals often are reduced to "We want to save the city!" which is an angle completely out of left field when compared to how the game starts, and the goal itself doesn't have much meat to back it up.

While combat is extremely diverse, with each enemy having at least one unique attack, this diversity is squashed by having each attack in the game do very minimal damage, both when it comes to dealing and receiving damage. Even with an attack buff accessory and one of the strongest weapons in the game (Big Scrib), I was often doing 1 damage increments for the majority of basic attack patterns until successfully hitting the time command 5-8 times, where it would begin to do 2 or 3 damage each further successful hit. This is damning because:

1. You have to land a lot of attacks! Even my special moves would only do slightly more damage than a good 8+ combo basic attack. If I messed up an action input early on in the attack, I would do 1 or 2 damage only.

2. The enemy attacks A LOT. Even with each unique enemy attack, and the 3 levels of difficulty their attacks have, it is not enough to offset the amount of times you see each attack. Enemies often attack 2-3 times a turn, which has you replaying the same battle mini games again and again, and if you are successful in these mini-games then you deal a small amount of damage back, however if not the damage you receive is relatively small.

These two things slow the battles down to a crawl if you miss the action command for your attack and get hurt by failing the enemy mini-games. In boss battles, it was hard to tell if i was waiting for a scripted attack, or if they just had that much health. The last few bosses in the game had fun mechanics of their own, but most bosses have the player wailing on a punching bag of a boss with 1-3 damage per attack, even after using all of my special attacks and super goblin move.

Despite these issues, I found Knuckle Sandwich to be a flawed but enjoyable game, and I think the developer should be proud at what they created, but this game seriously lacked story planning, almost as if it was making it up as it went along, and the game suffers from it a TON. Somehow, the ending was satisfying, though it also felt completely out of left field. It's clear the game doesn't have many players sticking it through to the end though, with a 15% achievement rate for the "beat the game" achievement, only approx 3/20 players beat the game as of the posting of this review.

If the battle mechanics and art for this game look like something you would enjoy, give it a shot! If you are going in expecting an amazing story however, it might be best to look elsewhere. 20 bucks isn't too big of an ask for a game like this, so I would recommend it as long as you are aware of it's shortcomings.

7/10

HEY MAN, I HEARD YOU LIKED BULLETS, SO THE DEVS MADE IT SO YOU CAN SHOOT BULLETS AT BULLETS WHO SHOOT BULLETS SO YOU CAN DODGE BULLETS WHILE YOU BULLET YOUR BULLETS AT OTHER BULLETS!

Seriously though, this game is fantastic, I love how skill based the combat is. With the addition of the dodge roll and blanks, makes the combat fair and engaging, and while other players complain about the difficulty, I think it is completely fine. It was your fault you got shot, and lost that life, and local co-op makes it great with a friend, plus unlockable characters makes this definitely worth the money, even with the bundle.

I would give it a BULLETS!/10

Why is this on every list I see? this game is garbage. I know its a beta but still the 2d mehcanics suck, and after the first 10 minuits, you realze they try to do somthing like terraria, or minecraft but what it ends up into is a world where you cant accomplish anything, or build anything without putting hours into the game, its not even worth the space on my hard drive, and the mecahnics are extremely flawed. and the battling, is the icing on the cake of crap.

0/10 Wouldn't even start up again.
