Good:
-The world is a work of art, and uses lots of different colours and palettes change in different environments
-The combat has a lot of cool ideas and influences
-AMAZING amount of unique enemies, further enhanced by the ability for them to also have different gear. Aesthetic diversity is in a place I WISH other games could come close to
-The loot and crafting is fun, and has enough modifiers to really add specialization to your playstyle
-a decent amount of skills such as dual wielding that can round add to your unique playstyle (I wish there were more, but it isn't nearly as bad as the lack of psi-powers and mutations)
-The plants, and fur are especially well done which is great because that's 90% of the visuals
-Good number of mini-bosses
-Character customization is phenomenal
-Your character will look and play different from your friend's character by the end of the game
Bad:
-The world feels very empty a lot of the time
-Map markers for non-main quest activities all look identical
-Enemy reactions to being hit by melee combat make your hits feel weightless
-Needs a lock on button, but does not have one
-Many copy pasted buildings/forts
-Melee weapon sounds are weak
-Karma system feels forced and doesn't do much except gate certain psi-powers (and change the ending)
-Tutorial has a lot of unskippable dialogue
-Most of the challenge early on has been fighting with the mechanics rather than the enemies
-Waiting for weapons to reload and ki to regen means a lot of strafing and waiting
-Narrator has a great voice, but the writing can make them an annoying companion
-Quickheal only works when your health is low, so it doesnt matter if you're 1-hit away from death against a mini-boss, you need to stop moving, stop looking, and use both hands to select a healing item on gamepad (would work if the enemies were as polished as something like dark souls perhaps)
-So many forced flashbacks to being a kid interrupting the flow of the game
-There is very little freedom to how you do tasks. Invisible walls block paths into forts you're trying to take over.
-Quests are almost exlusively fetch quests
-VERY few psi powers and mutations, and all of them from what I can tell are active (despite the fire roll being perfect to be a passive or even a toggle to bind to your normal roll)
-NPCs have next to zero personality because they all share the same narrator
-The puzzles are almost all "line up the colour" puzzles, and feel like padding/busy work

Overall thoughts:
The game feels like a bunch of brilliant systems that lack polish, and a bunch of filler objectives to use it on, in a beautiful world not populated with enough life or encounters. The story didn't drive me forward, the enemies didn't drive me forward, the characters didn't drive me forward, the level of creative freedom didn't drive me forward, and the activities didn't drive me forward. The lack of polish and tedium brought me to a stop. I feel like it needed another year for: sidequest and fort design, polishing of systems, unique narrators for each NPC to help give them personality, improvement of enemy movesets and ai, and time to fill the world with life and encounters.

New:

Multiplayer randomly started working after refusing to work for almost an hour. Don't know what changed. But for now I'm changing my review to positive. It's a fantastic game when it works, but when I buy a game for multiplayer, and that feature just flat out doesn't function, whether it's a fantastic game no longer matters.

Original:

Multiplayer just no longer works. 7 hours of play wasted, and can't even connect to my girlfriend's lobby without getting an error now, and same thing for her connecting to mine. None of the fixes online work, so we can't even start over. Unacceptable state for a game to be in. Not buying anything form Deep Silver again if this is how they support their games.

One of the most tilting trial and error games ever. I love it when it's working. But some pieces of early levels are designed in ways where it almost feels like luck to get near one set of several clusters of enemies without getting shot by one of the dozen that have LOS on an open area. Getting the timing down to block shots is very difficult, and if you can't do it, you're in for a world of spamming "R" to retry. Want to love the game, but I'm sick of doing the same section 20 times. If you like the feeling of ramming your head into a wall to "git gud", probably a game you'll love. If you haven't the patience to deal with doing the same section dozens of times, and then breezing through the next 6 in 30 seconds, then hitting another dozen try roadblock, maybe pass on this one. For the record, I played the demo a while back, beat the demo, and had no issues with it, so you may have to set a two hour timer and see if it starts rubbing you the wrong way.

This is one of the best games I've ever played in my life. I've made great friends on here, and it's served as an anchor during changing chapters of my life. There's still a very strong Ambush mode and Push mode community alive and well, and the custom co-op maps on the expanded arsenal mod servers could keep you having fun forever. Don't wait for a sale, just pick it up if you like tactical shooters, and talk to the community members on the Ambush servers about how the mechanics work. It was worth all two thousand hours of my time, and honestly it might still be worth a couple or more thousands more. We'll see.

This is by far the best survival crafting game I've ever played, and I am only writing such a short review right now because I want to get back to playing. I love it, my friends love it, and I will buy every dlc that gives me more biomes and expands this game after they finish the other half that are coming in early access. This is the most fun I've had in a long, long time, and the only negative thing I have to say about this game is that eventually you will run out of new things to discover and new biomes to explore, because all good things must come to an end. Gaming is going to ♥♥♥♥ so much when I'm finished with Valheim.

I loved this game for a while, but the more I played it the more I began to hate it. It's in this weird place between perfect game and infuriating nightmare. RNG can often absolutely destroy a great run, and leave you feeling like you have no control, which sucks because when you're not in that particular run-ending encounter, this game is very good at giving you lots of options to make you feel like you in fact have very fine control over your situation even though the opportunities and obstacles themselves are randomized. I do want to note that some of the losses will feel very good, because you'll know exactly how you failed, and feel EXACTLY where you should improve your skills. When it's your fault, boy is it a satisfying and motivating loss.

I want to love this game. I wish I could recommend this game. I know this review (in a sea of positive reviews) probably won't deter you from getting this game. All the same I love rogue-lites and I can see an amazing gem in here, but it just isn't quite shining. So when I could recommend Slay the Spire, Griftlands, Hades, Crown Trick, Enter the Gungeon, Cryptark, Immortal Redneck, Death Road to Canada, Prey (Mooncrash DLC), Curse of the Dead Gods, Monster Train, One Step from Eden, Children of Morta, In Celebration of Violence, or even the not as well known Coin Crypt, it's hard for me to tell someone get this instead.

I'd love to see the devs come back to this concept with a sequel that made the game longer and perfected the balance. But as it stands I can only recommend this game to those who don't mind frequently losing a run for reasons that feel entirely out of their hands, or getting to the end of the game only for the hard as nails (even on easy mode, I tested just for this review) encounter you have to complete at the end to destroy you and invalidate your whole run. But, if you don't mind that randomness, this is one of the best rogue-lites out there in terms of core design, and it has lots of replayability; the amount of ships and strategies available to mix it up run could keep you busy for weeks if you don't mind the rough edges. So strange to feel like something should be rated 8/10 or 9/10 and still not want to play it or have others play it.

Personally I'm glad I played it, but because some of the design is genius and it was very very enjoyable to learn from it. So if you like that kind of experience enough to pay $10, that could make it worth getting too.

Let me preface by saying this is one of my favorite games of all time -like top 5 for sure- because I'm about to rip this game a new one in this review. Also note that I've been playing ALMOST exclusively in offline mode so I'm not bothered while playing, and have closer to 50-60 hours on this game, not 8.2 as it currently says.

Lets start with the fact that I have a 3600 with a 3070 on a nvme m.2 (w/ a dram chip) and 32gb of ram, and I still get ~40fps pretty frequently on 1920x1080 even when I turn many of my settings down and keep crowd density to medium and DLSS to performance/auto. That is NOT what they said on the specs table. It NEEDS to be optimized further, which is kind of sad considering I can tell by the texture pop in distance on character models and world objects that this was painstakingly adjusted already to make the experience smooth. That said, I run Control on maxed out settings at this resolution and get 80+ frames and typically get 110 in most areas, so while I understand that Control is not open world or as ambitious in some of it's graphical qualities, I'd expect at least 60fps stable with some things turned down.

Next, lets talk bugs. I haven't had many truth be told, and certainly no where near the amount of some of my friends, but even after their 1.04 patch I'm still getting story moments where models bug out, and people take drinks out of their guns rather than their glass. There have been a few times where I've fallen maybe 1ft-2ft down off an object when climbing across rooftops and just up and died. I've been unable to do basic things like rebind the inventory button, or uncrouch during dialogue, and I've still had mission breaking bugs like being unable to draw my weapon for the shooting competition in the sidequest "Stadium Love" and the 12 second timer being up before I could do anything. This game needs patches badly.

Now onto some cut features that were particularly disappointing to find out were not in the game. You cannot hack using monowire anymore, making it hardly any different from mantis blades or gorilla arms. Not being able to wall run and hang using mantis blades was an unfortunate, but understandable loss, but losing this feature on top of it just makes the choice feel very underwhelming. Kerenzikov is now only a cyberware implant, and no longer has an inhalant form, in fact, aside from the 2 healing items in their various rarities, I (and all of the people I've talked to) have found zero other inhalants you can take. The grenade damage radius graphic is still in the game, but is now visually downgraded to just a gamey red sphere instead of the cool hologram covered indicators that were shown in gameplay. Why? Why was this downgraded, it couldn't have been super graphically intensive, so why make it worse than you already had it in a previous version? There are SO MANY instances of this. Honestly, I have faith that the bugs will eventually be fixed, that the optimization will go up at least a little, and that a lot of my gripes will be addressed, but these features most likely will never be added back, and if they are, will likely be part of some mod project that pops up intending to restore cut content, and that all depends on the mod support being good enough for that to be likely.

The stealth ai is such a mixed bag, on the one hand enemies will go investigate if cams randomly go down, which gives a reason to hack them to disable instead, which is fantastic nuance. On the other hand, enemies will not see you carrying a body 20m away from them, but set that body down and they'll instantly notice the body, and then almost always immediately notice you too. It's sad because the system often works well enough that I don't think about it, which is what I'd want out of a game that includes stealth, yet isn't made exclusively to focus on it.

Alright, so lets get to some good things. I'd like to start with the things I've seen others criticize that I think is actually pretty good. For example, the skill trees. Now when I first heard that most of the perks are just number bonuses, I was really sad, but now that I've gotten my hands on it, I've completely changed my mind. most of these changes are conditional, and change how you approach your loadout and gameplay, and encourage replaying with different modifiers. It's hard to explain concisely, and I'm pretty long winded at the best of times, but I'll give a small sample. There are perks that increase the damage you deal with handguns when you're at least 15m away, another that removes damage fall off for handguns, as well as perks in stealth that give bonuses for shooting people while undetected, and add to that the fact silencers decrease base damage, but increase headshot multipliers, and suddenly sniping with silenced pistols becomes a whole playstyle to build around. You can do this with so many mixed and matched stats, and it really adds to the tabletop meets immersive sim style that makes this game so replayable. I genuinely believe that by the end of the DLC cycle, esp if mod support goes well, this game will be one of the most fun to play multiple times of any I've seen attempt systems like this.

Now onto the story, and how it kinda ♥♥♥♥♥ with the last part I mentioned. The story, setting, and fantastic characters are the stars of the show. The side quests and main quests are all top notch, and tell very interesting stories of their own, and it feels like things can genuinely shift based on your actions. But, once you've played through this game once or twice, the parts that don't change will start to grate against you, as the amount of time you'll spend sitting listening to dialogue trees you've already been through and reveals you already know about will be immense. There are also very few chances to go off the beaten path and try things that make sense, but aren't default options (I'd give examples, but I can't think of a way off the top of my head without spoilers). So while you may absolutely love the idea of replaying the game, some might find it really taxing to actually do so (though thankfully you can skip forward in dialogue most of the time).

WIth a setting this pretty and immersive, and game systems that are this replayable, the real thing that hurts this title that is the expansiveness. There are very few unique gun models (only 3 that I know of), there arent as many weapons as i would have expected, not as much cyberware (esp truly different cyberware), and not enough hacking daemons. Now Divinity II had a lot of mods that added a lot of new options for spells and classes, and they fixed that particular issue, and that could do the same for Cyberpunk, BUT there was one issue that remained for Divinity that I think is the core problem in both of these games. The campaign is the same. There are a lot of little variations, but ultimately most of the gameplay sandboxes are the same. Both games were inspired by tabletops, and can really stretch their legs with player choice in a lot of the same ways, but could you imagine playing DnD with the same campaign every time? So how do you fix this? Well, with the DLC. It was already mentioned that the DLC coming will be at least as large and numerous as Witcher 3, and in fact they said it's likely we'll get MORE DLC than WItcher 3. So, if they add alternative campaigns for V that take them down new main and side stories that continue to increase the density and variety of quests in Night City, and these expansions come with new guns and cyberware, there should be enough to do to keep new build fun to play with.

And now for some closing thoughts. I've never seen a game with so many good pillars, the city itself is enjoyable just to be in and move through, the combat and build variety is fun to play around with, the characters and story are captivating, and the minor details that stitch the experience together show an immense amount of care. And yet it still feels rough, and unfinished.

I had a glowing review before. They changed the mmr system. Since the update, I've gone from where I always was at 3 stars to 5 stars. I have extracted 1 bounty in something like 30 matches. I clearly don't belong in this mmr, and I cannot for the life of me understand what I did to deserve being placed here. I tried to give it a chance, I really did, but I'm having zero fun getting absolutely destroyed every single match. I like the necro change, I like that deranking is punished, I like the changes to falloff damage and headshot range. The new map is good, the new wild target is fun. None of that means anything if I can't get into a game at a skill level I can actually play at. I'm uninstalling. I doubt they'll change the mmr system off of open skill, at least anytime soon, so I doubt I'll be playing again for years, if it lasts that long. Very sad to lose my favorite pvp game, but I don't want to spend my limited free time losing every fight I get into.
